When the King is Killed.

Chapter 7: Crests 3:1

Audrey surveyed the scene.

Thirty dead already by her estimates.

'Grimlocks?' Audrey thought. 'By a major trading city? Why would they ever come this close to real civilization?'

She pointed her staff at the nearest Grimlock.

"Arcane blast."

A bolt of purple magical energy shot through the monster leaving it's scorched body dead.

'Simple spells are enough to kill them. So non enchanted weapons are still viable there must be a lot to warrant this much death already.'

She looked towards the forest and frowned.

Thousands of eyes peered at the city.

Audrey sighed.

'This is going to be my whole night.' She sighed.

______

"Guard the civilians and merchants!" A guard ordered. "Don't let them through! We need to buy time for the Royal Knights to arrive!"

"How long until they get here!?" One of the guards asked.

"We've got hours to wait!" One yelled.

"We'll never survive that long!"

The lead guard froze as he heard a whisper.

"Weave Crafting."

The words were nearly to quiet to hear.

And then a roaring inferno surrounded the large group of Guards. Incinerating the Grimlocks.

The flames vanished and a man landed down in front of them, on top of his light refracting staff.

"...Thank you sir." The lead guard said walking towards the man.

"Fall back." The man said. "There's to many for you all. I'll take care of them."

"Don't be stupid." The lead guard said. "We can provide back up."

"No thanks." He said, dashing forward towards the forest.

They tried to follow the man.

He reached the wall and scaled it with ease.

______

Reaching the top Audrey looked towards the encroaching monsters.

Thousands of monsters.

She raised her staff, which she thankfully remembered to distort from normal view, and started chanting.

"Weavecrafting." She said as embers roared into an inferno. "Rein of flames!"

The entire forest caught flames as fire emerged from the earth.

Screeches and wails were heard for miles as the monsters cried out in unison.

She waited a few minutes before casting a rain over the forest to limit the damage.

Turning she leapt off of the wall and walked towards the approaching guards.

"There's bound to be a few left in the city." She said. "Make sure that no one goes out alone after dark until you're certain that there's none left."

"W-Wait a minute."

Turning Audrey looked at the disbelieving guard.

"I saw the flames..." He said. "That amount of power. You're a craft weaver aren't you?"

Audrey just stared.

"Well... the nobles of this town will pay highly for protection!"

"Unfortunately." Audrey said. "That's not something I can do. Please make peace with that. I'm putting my son at Risk staying here any longer. Good day."

Audrey left.

______

"Just great." The butcher sighed.

His looked at the dead butcher in the competing stall.

Dumbass.

The Grimlock was glaring at him now.

Had to draw the damn things attention.

"Sorry Dear." He said as it approached unsteadily. Unsure as to if the butcher was truly cornered. "Look after Maine for me."

The beast lunged forward.

Fwoosh~!

A seared corpse landed in front of him as the man who had bought all of his scraps from earlier walked towards the dead butchers meats.

...

"Thanks for the good deals earlier." The man said after a few minutes of setting the meat into some strange dimensional spell. Walking over he tossed a bag to the Butcher, who caught it.

"That should make up for the business this guy cost you."

"This has gotta be at least a hundred silver." The butcher said, surprised by the bags size.

"I've got my fair share." The man said. Holding a much bigger bag of silver. "Looks like he was after the hearts of Nobles. Well, see you."

The man walked away.

And the Butcher could only stare at the astonishing young man.

______

Audrey walked into the door and looked at Ralline, who was still shaking on the bed.

"I'm back." Audrey said. "Let's get out of here Bell."

"...Yes please." Ralline nodded.

______

"Wow." Audrey said as they climbed into their cart. "Can't believe this boy lived."

"It's cause he's such a good boy yes he is." Ralline said scratching the underside of the horses mouth.

The horse nuzzled against Ralline's face and shoulder.

Audrey looked at the other dead horses and Oxalo.

"You're really damn lucky aren't y-"

CAW~!

Out of the soon to be dwindling hay popped a familiar face.

"What in the Gods...?" Audrey said.

"Lindt!" Ralline cried out, hugging the Raven that had delivered Audrey's Gala Notice. "When did you get here!?"

Caw!

I pecked stupidly at her hand, as if expecting food to be there.

"Strange bird..." Audrey mumbled as Lindt flew on top of Ralline's head.

"Well I've seen stranger." Audrey said. "Let's go. Hip Hip."

She hit the reins and the horse started walking.

The guards that tried to speak were ignored.

They left Veinren behind.

______

"What exactly happened here?"

Ventares, a decorated Royal Knight looked confused at the chaotic yet controlled scene.

"It was... something sir." The lead guard said. "A single man saved us all."

"He defeated everyone of these Grimlocks?"

"Yes sir." The lead Guard said. "I... I believe he was a Weavecrafter."

The man's eyes widened.

"Really?" The man said.

"He seemed quite fond of fire." The Guard said. "But he also summoned rain to put it all out."

"I see..." The Royal Knight said.

Ventares surveyed the scene once more.

"Where is this man?" He asked.

"He left with his son, Just after he finished them off." The lead guard said. "They've been gone for nearly six hours now."

"..." Ventares sighed. "Understood. It's no use going after him with that large of a head start." He turned to the Royal knights. "Raise camp tonight! Tomorrow we will set a rotating schedule!"

______

Audrey glanced at the sleeping Ralline.

Lindt was on her forehead pecking aimlessly in the air. Her 'blanket' barely covering her body anymore.

"No..." Ralline groaned out in her sleep. "Dad... Do go..."

Eyeing the horse, Audrey went to wave her finger but stopped.

Standing up and leaving the horse unattended, she walked into the carriage and gently pulled the tarp Ralline was using like a blanket back into a suitable position.

Audrey went to go back to the front of the carriage When Ralline's hand grabbed her wrist.

The grip was painful and Audrey gasped.

"Ralline y-" Audrey stopped as bright white eyes glared into the depths of her soul.

"You lied to me Audrey... You Lied! He's not dead... You didn't actually kill the Devil!"

Ralline's eyes rolled into the back of her head as she collapsed.

Audrey caught her as she fell.

...

Audrey stared at Ralline as she slept.

A shiver went down her spine.

"Just as creepy as your damn dad." Audrey said, gently rolling her back into her blanket.

Audrey looked down at her bruised and shaking hand.

"Looks like Ramone left a piece of himself behind after all... Damn old man... Still on my back about that."

Audrey grabbed Ralline's hand and stared at the back of it.

A ball of thread and a pair of scissors were nearly seared into the poor girls hand.

Gently gliding her hand over it. She cast a spell.

Ralline wasn't quite ready to use this power willy nilly.

'Best to leave this alone for now.'

A circle formed over the hand and Audrey Sealed the power away.

Walking back to the front of the carriage, Audrey sat down and grabbed the reins.
