When Dragon Balls Descend Upon Marvel

Chapter 268: Eddie’s Backup Plan

Anne stopped, staring coldly at the man before her. She loosened her grip, dropped the cardboard box to the ground, and said icily:

"You used me. Because of you, I got fired."

She pulled off Eddie's engagement ring from her finger, shoved it into the pocket of his shirt, patted his chest once, then bent down, picked up the box again, and turned away.

Eddie Brock froze for a moment, stunned by her actions, but quickly chased after her. Following the plan he had thought up on his way here, he spoke:

"Anne, I'm sorry. I know I messed up this time. I didn't do things properly."

But Anne ignored the hollow apology and kept walking toward home.

Seeing that she wasn't slowing down to hear him out, Eddie hurried to throw out his trump card.

"Anne, even though Drake struck back at us this time, I'm not completely helpless."

"His disregard for human life cannot be allowed to continue."

That made Anne stop. She turned and asked:

"And what's your plan?"

Eddie looked around cautiously, then said softly:

"God."

Hearing the name, Anne fell into thought before asking:

"You're planning to take the Life Foundation issue to Smith Dole?"

Seeing she was finally willing to listen, Eddie quickly explained:

"Mr. Smith's ideals would never allow someone like Drake to continue unchecked."

"Last time, during my interview with him, he gave me his card. He said reporters like me, who dare to expose darkness, won't always succeed. Sometimes we'll face retaliation, unable to shake powerful interests."

"He told me, if I ever ran into that kind of situation—when the enemy truly was evil—I could go to him for help."

Anne was stunned.

"Eddie, you never told me you had his support."

To Anne, Smith Dole was a true giant. Drake's Life Foundation, worth billions, was already a terrifyingly powerful empire. But compared to Capsule Corporation, it was nothing. With just a little influence, Smith could crush Drake entirely. And above him still stood the peak of humanity itself—Smith Dole.

Eddie gently took Anne's hands, still holding the box, and said earnestly:

"Anne, that night you were so beautiful. I was lost in you and forgot to share this with you."

"But I believe it's not too late now."

Anne let him take the box and continued walking forward.

Seeing her hand over the box, Eddie knew she was forgiving him, at least a little. He quickly followed and added:

"I'll organize everything and report it to Mr. Smith."

Anne thought for a moment, then said:

"Eddie, do you have solid evidence?"

"Do you really think your word alone will make Mr. Smith turn his gaze to Drake?"

Eddie answered:

"Sarah Chambers, Philip Buckley, Robert MacDonald—their families are the breakthrough. They all died in Life Foundation drug trials. And there are likely countless homeless who died in secret."

Back home, Anne looked at him seriously.

"Eddie, you're a reporter full of justice and courage. Your work has taken down many corrupt figures."

"I know this gives you a sense of purpose. But you need to remember—society doesn't operate that simply."

"My old law firm specialized in defending exactly the kind of people and cases you couldn't accept."

"So when you act, think carefully. Gather real, crushing evidence before striking. This time, the consequence was just me losing my job and you being fired, blacklisted from the entire industry. Next time, it could be nine bullets in your back, with your death ruled as suicide."

"The Life Foundation is worth 30 billion dollars. Do you understand what that number means?"

Eddie finally understood why she had been so furious. He really had gotten arrogant—especially after receiving Smith Dole's card. That arrogance made him reckless during the interview with Drake. Surprised, he asked:

"Wait—industry blacklist? What do you mean? I didn't even know."

Anne explained:

"My boss told me when I was let go. Drake spread the word—any outlet hiring you is declaring war on the Life Foundation."

"You might be a star reporter, but to them, you're nothing. No media company will risk that—unless someone even more powerful steps in."

At that, Eddie pulled out Smith Dole's card and smiled.

"Fortunately, now we have someone much more powerful."

Meanwhile.

In the Life Foundation's underground garage, Carlton Drake and a group of scientists gathered to welcome the return of alien lifeforms.

He opened the trunk of a car, revealing sealed containers—each holding one of the four symbiotes.

Watching the living creatures writhe inside, Drake's face lit up with joy.

"My god… they're beautiful."

Then he ordered sharply:

"Prepare for experiments. Build containment chambers. I want to know everything about these extraterrestrial lifeforms."

Life Foundation's shuttle had discovered a comet in deep space, detecting thousands of lifeforms on its surface. But during the return journey, an accident left them with only these four.

To Drake, Earth was running out of time. Overpopulation, resource shortages, pollution, global warming—problems he couldn't solve. His only answer lay beyond Earth.

And now, a comet filled with life… if these creatures could survive on Earth, then perhaps humans could survive there too.
