Chapter 264: Movements of All Sides
Smith Dole thought for a moment before speaking.
"Extraordinaries are a kind of talent — just like scientists among humans. No one can be certain that their child won't become an Extraordinary in the future.
"A scientist can use inventions to benefit humanity, and an Extraordinary can use their abilities to protect humanity.
"Of course, Extraordinaries, like scientists, are more likely to gain wealth and recognition from society. Their existence will not squeeze the living space of ordinary people.
"As for superpowered crime, that's an unavoidable problem. Every group has both good and bad people, and Extraordinaries are no exception. Whether someone turns bad involves many factors — their upbringing, family influence, moral outlook, childhood experiences — all these shape a person's final choices. But I believe good people and superheroes are the majority. People like Tony and me will fight evil, and I believe more will join in the future."
Eddie Brock didn't refute Smith's answer. He understood that becoming an Extraordinary mostly came down to special gifts — but what exactly those were, no one had made public. Was it bloodline? Genes? The random awakening of some recessive gene fragment? Or perhaps a fateful encounter or life experience? Neither the government nor private groups had disclosed any research on the matter.
As for artificially creating one with a super-soldier serum? Aside from the known example of Captain America, there hadn't been a second case. The doctor who originally developed the serum died in an assassination by enemy spies, the project data destroyed, and the government had never succeeded in reproducing it.
Eddie asked,
"Mr. Smith, do you believe every newborn has the potential to become an Extraordinary?"
Smith thought of the Inhumans among humanity, the awakening of various genes, the spread of werewolves and vampires, Kamar-Taj's magic and sorcery, Kunlun's qi techniques, and the Dragon Ball world's ki, plus science-based enhancements like various serums. Then he replied:
"Yes, I believe every newborn could become a superhero. How that gift is realized is something we can't predict.
"It's like how no one can be certain that a child on a school bus won't become the president one day."
…
Soon, Eddie Brock's exclusive interview came to an end. During the conversation, Eddie wanted to ask some juicier questions — like whether Smith and Tony, being friends, shared certain tastes, such as sleeping with Playboy cover models, or probing into Smith's background, or his views on vigilante superhero activities, and even about his combat strength.
But Smith wasn't about to answer just anything. Questions probing into secrets — like whether the higher-ups had already built an academy to train Extraordinaries, and whether he was one of them — got nothing from him. The same went for queries about whether Area 51 housed aliens.
Online, most opinions of Smith Dole were positive and full of praise. Of course, there were complaints and dislikes, but those voices were few and had no real impact.
After the interview, Eddie and his team left. Smith then instructed Fox to gather information on the Life Foundation. He needed to know how far along the symbiote incident had progressed.
…
That night.
A Life Foundation spacecraft, Life One, had just completed its sample collection in outer space and was on its way back to Earth.
"Life One to Foundation Control Center, sample collection complete, preparing for return."
"Copy that, Life One, prepare for atmospheric re-entry."
"Roger, initiating re-entry program."
"Coordinates zero point four one zero three point—"
"Oh, damn it. Shut it — shut it now!"
In the Foundation control center: "Calling Life One, signal is unstable, please respond."
"Mayday! Life One, mayday!"
"Control Center to Life One, please respond!"
Moments later, Life One crashed into a forest in East Malaysia.
At the same time, Dr. Erik Selvig was brought back to New York by agents under Sitwell's orders.
In an underground base, Selvig saw a one-eyed Black man who called his name and asked:
"So, you're the mastermind?"
"Strange… I thought they brought me here to kill me."
Nick Fury walked up to Selvig and said,
"I heard about what happened in New Mexico. Your work is nothing short of brilliant — truly impressive."
Selvig spread his arms.
"I have much more work to do. Jane Foster's theories… a passage to another world. None of this was foreseeable."
Seeing Fury remain silent, Selvig added,
"Isn't that so?"
Fury turned around and walked a few steps toward a silver case.
"The thing about imagination and truth is… there's always a difference.
"But sometimes… the two overlap."
He opened the case — inside was the Tesseract.
Selvig looked at it with curiosity.
"What is this?"
"Power, Doctor," Fury said.
"If we can figure out how to harness it, we could have unlimited power — power beyond God, beyond Iron Man, beyond Thor."
Fury knew full well the Tesseract's might, having seen it firsthand. But S.H.I.E.L.D.'s scientists had failed for years to unlock its potential — which was why he needed Selvig.
Intrigued, especially after witnessing the powers of Smith Dole and Thor, Selvig said,
"I think it's worth a try."
Soon, Selvig and Fury reached an agreement — he would join S.H.I.E.L.D., focusing on Tesseract research.
Elsewhere…
After promising his children, Ten Rings leader Xu Wenwu immediately mobilized the gang's resources to collect naturally round stones around the world. Following specifications from Xu Shangqi and Xu Xialing for their diameters, Wenwu also ordered his men to gather every scrap of information on Smith Dole and the League of Assassins.
Though he had promised his daughter, Wenwu hadn't entirely let go of his ambitions. As the saying goes, "Know yourself and know your enemy, and you will never be defeated."
