Chapter 57: Ch.56: Sister Su’s lap pillow?!
Cluck! Cluck! Cluck!
The panicked croaking of chickens sounded clearly through the clearing while being accompanied by the sound of wings flapping.
Wen Jiexi dodged the chicken who tried to slap her face with its wings and stepped back away from the other chicken that tried to peck her feet with its beak. She felt it was rather peculiar, why were these chickens so good at fighting? Their attacks were a little too scary. Who was it that said chickens couldn't fly? Explain to her how exactly can a chicken slap her in the face with its wings when she is so much taller than the tiny creatures? Were their jumping abilities just that good?
In order to buy time for Su Chenyu, Wen Jiexi had been running around madly in the enclosure and even risked her life by approaching the hen house and luring away the mother hens who wanted to protect their eggs. The scene was complete chaos and if it weren't for the fact they were in the middle of nowhere, a crowd would've most likely surrounded her to take pictures of this madness.
"Aiya, how annoying." Wen Jiexi dodged to the right, jumping up and down as she ran away from the chicken. She sneezed a few times and waved away the feathers that itched her face and blocked her vision. At the same time, she also pondered which two chickens to capture while keeping an eye on Su Chenyu who was picking up eggs to the side.
In a moment of inattention….dozens of chickens rushed at her and she narrowly avoided their charge as she rolled to the side. She was really afraid she might accidentally trample these weak animals to death or at least cause a few broken bones. After all, when they crowded together like that, it was hard to even see where her foot was landing.
"Ge! Ge! Ge!" At this moment, the hens finally noticed Su Chenyu stealing their eggs and changed directions to rush at her. And because of their cries, almost all the chicken turned to look at Su Chenyu. Wen Jiexi could practically see the fury of the bigger rooster's ignite into flames.
"Sister Su, run!" Wen Jiexi yelled. Su Chenyu reacted quickly and since the fence was only two to three steps away from the henhouse, she directly hopped over the waist-length fence behind her. She had already picked up more than a dozen eggs. She wasn't going to act excessively to the point where she wouldn't leave until she stole all the eggs. She knew when to quit.
Seeing Su Chenyu on the other side of the fence, the chickens could only cry loudly at her but couldn't do a thing.
At the same time, Wen Jiexi pounded from behind the chicken flock and reached out to grab two of the fattest chickens that she had set her sights on. She then jumped over the fence before the rest of the flock could react.
"Cluck! Cluck!" The two chickens struggled fiercely in Wen Jiexi's hands but they couldn't do anything as their fragile necks were grasped tightly in an iron grip. Their beaks and claws couldn't reach their assailant and what's the use of flapping their wings?
Uh…what should I do next? I can't call Sister Su over and ask for her to knock them out. I can technically kill these two with just one pinch but that seems a little too cruel…and I have to take them back alive!
After a few moments of hesitation, Wen Jiexi knocked the two struggling chickens's heads against each other. The two chickens immediately fell unconscious without any obvious injuries. They might have a concussion but Wen Jiexi couldn't care too much about that right now. She put the two no longer moving chickens onto the ground and tied them up tightly with her rope. This way they wouldn't be able to run even if she looks away.
"Sister Su, how are your gains?" Wen Jiexi asked after tying the chickens up and raised her head.
"12 eggs." Su Chenyu said after counting the eggs in her basket.
"Oh, not bad! That's at least one egg per person!" Wen Jiexi exclaimed. She never expected Su Chenyu's movements to be so fast to have picked up 12 eggs. She expected maybe 10 or less, but not 12.
"Are you hurt anywhere?" Su Chenyu gently brushed off the chicken feathers stuck on Wen Jiexi's body and asked.
"I'm fine, I'm fine. They just chased me around a bit. It's the chickens who've suffered, you know?" Wen Jiexi said helplessly.
And she wasn't joking. She had tried her best to not step on any of them or injure the weak chickens when she slapped them away. However, it was unavoidable for her to have hurt a few even though the biggest casualty was probably the two chickens knocked out by her.
If anyone saw this scene now, they would be speechless. The chicken enclosure was a mess. The originally clean ground was now full of chicken feathers and even some of the chickens now have bald patches on their bodies. Was this caused by Wen Jiexi? No, it was actually the other chickens who accidentally plucked their friends' feathers when their frantic claws missed their mark.
"They're all tied up!" Wen Jiexi patted her hands, wiped the sweat on her forehead, and then lifted the two chickens up by the rope.
"Should we go back now?"
The two still stood at the scene of the crime and the chickens still stared dangerously at them, croaking and clucking at them. In light of what just happened…it seems the chickens still held a grudge against them….how noisy…..
"Let's take the chickens and eggs back first." Su Chenyu naturally ignored the chicken's hateful stares and replied lightly.
"Alright, I bet they didn't expect us to be this fast! We probably spent less than half an hour to procure our ingredients." Wen Jiexi said with a smile.
But that's because most ordinary people wouldn't be able to catch a live chicken unless they paid a painful price. Some might even be covered in wounds from head to toe and still have nothing to show for it.
Su Chenyu helplessly patted Wen Jiexi's head,
"Let's go."
"En!"
No longer as anxious as when they arrived at the chicken enclosure, the two slowly made their way back to the meeting point.
"Although there aren't many people around her, this place feels rather relaxing. It's not a bad idea to take a vacation out here when one has the time to." Wen Jiexi sighed.
"Indeed. It's not a bad place at all."
"Right? Right? Although it's convenient to live in the big cities and whatnot, most people would actually feel miserable to be cooped up in such a small space. Of course, I would still live in the city instead. Although it is crowded and suffocating, I just can't live without the conveniences of technology." Wen Jiexi scratched her head and said.
On the way back, they chatted as they walked and soon arrived at the original meeting point.
Unexpectedly, the empty open space now had a table set up and what looked like a gas stove that could be used outside. There were other appliances set up as well and overall it looked like a makeshift outdoor kitchen. It seemed like a lot of work to set this up but….just how much did the crew not want them to enter the actual kitchen?
Chu Heling and Huo Lin'er were kneading the dough while Yan Haocheng was hand-rolling the noodles. Even Li Lingqing was doing work as she held a large bowl to the side. All in all, they seemed to be getting some good results
"Jiexi, Sister Su, you're back." Chu Heling looked up and saw Su Chenyu and Wen Jiexi.
"Oh, and your gains are not bad! Tsk, tsk, these chickens are really fat." Li Lingqing leaned over and touched her chin as she studied the chickens.
"You have flour on your hand." Chu Heling helplessly pulled Li Lingqing's hand away and then grabbed a wet tissue to clean Li Lingqing's chin.
"Brother Yan, we got the chickens for you!" Wen Jiexi set the chickens on the ground.
"Are they dead?" Yan Hoacheng looked at the unmoving chickens and raised an eyebrow.
"No, I just knocked their heads together and then they fainted." Wen Jiexi smiled dryly.
Knocked their heads?! Isn't that a little cruel?! The people present all signed inwardly but then remembered something. Weren't they even worse as they were going to actually kill the chickens?
"I'm going to take care of these guys first." Yan Haocheng dragged the chickens to a temporarily erected faucet and a large basin as he grabbed a butcher knife. Wen Jiexi and the others watched as Yan Haocheng sat on a small bench and started to…sharpen the knife….
Shuaa…..Shua….
He sharpened the knives seriously and then started washing the chickens. Perhaps the chickens woke up due to the cold water or maybe it was something else, but they did not obediently wait for their deaths as they opened their eyes. Seeing the shiny knife come closer to their bodies, they yelled and cried, but could only struggle fruitlessly. Unfortunately for them, Wen Jiexi had tied them up rather tightly and they couldn't move their necks or heads at all.
How tragic….the five women standing to the side decided not to watch anymore and focused on the dough instead.
"Sister Heling, what are you going to make?"
"Just some homemade noodles. Those are relatively simple to make." Chu Heling said as she unwrapped the plastic wrap around the dough.
"Are you going to make some more?" Wen Jiexi asked as she looked at the doubt that was about the same size as her face.
"This should be enough….but I'll make some more later when we finish the first batch." Chu Heling had wanted to confidently say that this was enough when she looked at Wen Jiexi and then at Su Chenyu. She also thought of a certain someone who was out fishing right now….so she changed her words and thought it would be better to make some more later.
Five people gathered around the table to knead the noodles when not long after….a sweaty Mu Du and Shi Junmao came back.
"Ah…ah….ladies! We are back! We've collected lots!" Mu Du set down the vegetable basket that was strapped to his back and sat down panting.
"The vegetable garden here is quite big. We were able to pick some vegetables that are used in common dishes like cabbage and so on. We also found some onions, garlic, and peppers. There was even a small mushroom cultivation room where we found some shitake and enoki mushroom." Shu Junmao set down their harvest on the table.
"Hey, hey, we're back!" As soon as Shi Junmao finished, Wen Ting's voice sounded out. Both of the approaching figures had a body full of wet clothes while carrying two buckets in their hands. From the way the water was splashing now and then, there should be a lot of fish inside.
"There were so many fish! They even separated the fish into three ponds! One large, another medium, and a small one. We caught a bit from each one. Three big ones, five medium-sized ones, and a dozen small ones." Lan Yuyan placed his bucket on the ground.
"It seems that our lunch will be very rich today!" Wen Ting licked her lips and looked at the bountiful ingredients in front of her with a smile.
"I'll take care of the fish. Sister Heling, can I leave the noodles to you?" Huo Lin'er put down the wrapped dough and asked.
"No problem." Chu Heling nodded.
"We'll help out as well." Wen Jiexi nodded.
"Then we'll help wash the vegetables!" Wen Ting ran to the place where the vegetables were piled when suddenly they heard the screaming of chickens from the side.
Everyone turned their heads to see Yan Haocheng grab a chicken by its neck as he placed the poor creature onto the cutting board. He lifted his knife high into the air and….it dropped down ruthlessly. There was no hesitation in his movements at all. The chicken's legs stiffened when its head separated from its neck before its body went limp. Yan Haocheng lifted the chicken, grabbed the prepared bowl, and then began bleeding out the chicken.
So bloody…..
Everyone could no longer watch. They should just focus on eating instead. As for the process of how the chicken gets in their stomach…..it was better not to think too much about it.
They divided the work as they prepared lunch. Some washed vegetables as others kneaded noodles. The noodles required more effort so about half of the people worked on the noodles. And Wen Jiexi was in charge of chopping the vegetables.
She had watched as Wen Ting held the kitchen knife rather clumsily and then chopped down with one hand like she was cleaving a boulder. She looked away from that disaster only to see Su Chenyu almost chop off her own hands. Curl the fingers, why are you cutting like that!! Ahhh!
Lan Yuyan's attempt was even more tragic than the other two as he simply tore or broke the vegetable in two with his bare hands. He said that this way would be quicker.
Wen Jiexi couldn't bear to watch anymore and directly said she would do it. Otherwise….there would be permanent disabilities, half-broken vegetables…and possibly a few deaths….
Wen Jiexi nimbly grabbed the washed vegetables and then started to chop. The ginger was cut into neat slices or diced up shreds. The pepper was cut into small pieces that were all roughly the same size. She then had the chopped up vegetables organized into small places.
Li Lingqing absentmindedly kneaded the dough as she watched Wen Jiexi and then whispered to Su Chenyu beside her.
"Tsk, tsk, your little fellow is both chaste and virtuous~ She's good at cooking too~ She'll make a god wife someday~"
Su Chenyu simply glared at her. Although she didn't know exactly how good Jiexi's cooking skills were, she could still tell Chu Heling's skills were still a bit better.
Seeing that Su Chenyu was ignoring her, Li Lingqing couldn't care less and leaned over to Chu Heling's side to inquire about the food.
An hour later, all the ingredients were ready. Then expect those who could cook, the rest were tossed to the side so they wouldn't get in the way.
At exactly noon, the strong aroma of food permeated through the grassland, and the dishes were served.
There was chicken noodle or cabbage noodle soup, five fried vegetable dishes, a large plate of fried eggs, braised fish, sweet and sour fish, steamed fish, and roast chicken that smelled amazing. When Old Zhan walked over to see how they were doing, his eyes widened with disbelief.
"Wow, you guys made all this?"
"Yeah, why? Jealous?" Mu Du said while slurping his noodles and chicken soup. At the same time, he sighed inwardly. Yan Hoacheng's cooking skills were just too great! The chicken soup was beyond delicious! The soup was not too greasy and even tasted a little sweet. The chicken was not overcooked but tender and soft. Furthermore, one doesn't know what technique he used as all parts of the chicken were delicious!
Old Zhan swallowed and suddenly felt that his decision of refusing to eat the contestants' dishes was a big mistake. Just look at that dish…it looked so delicious! But he couldn't even eat a bite of it.
"Old Zhan, you're not thinking of stealing our food, are you? Not only is that immoral, but if one of us goes hungry because there wasn't enough food….it will be your fault." Lan Yuyan grinned and then clamped down on a piece of steamed fish before smacking his lips in satisfaction.
"Why would I do such a thing!" Old Zhan said and placed his hands on his hips. And then as if he was stealing away a top-secret file, he 'sneakily' grabbed a piece of the steamed fish under the scornful gazes of the players. He ate the fish quietly and left.
If it wasn't for the fact that they were watching him, he would've taken the entire plate of steamed fish. It wasn't like they could finish all that food anyways! Old Zhan's shamelessness knew no bounds.
Half an hour later, Old Zhan looked at the empty and clean plates with regret. Why didn't he thicken his face earlier?!
Old Zhan looked up at the ten people now stuffed full of food and how they happily chatted with each other. This was different from what he had imagined. The variety show was not fun anymore! He would never admit that it was no longer fun because he wasn't invited to eat the food and now felt unhappy!
He cleared his throat and then smiled unkindly,
"Alright! Now that everyone is full, let's start the next game! Come, follow me!"
Old Zhan brought the group over to a fence that Wen Jiexi was familiar with. Although it was in the other direction to the chicken enclosure, there were still small animals enclosed behind the fences like the chickens were earlier. Upon closer inspection, one would find that the forage here was particularly lush with many fluffy bunnies, sheep, puppies, and kittens lying lazily underneath the sun. They basked in the warm sunlight and did not seem to be afraid of the approaching people as they raised their heads up curiously.
"These animals are raised to be appreciated by the guests of this ranch. They are not aggressive creatures, so they can be fed and touched. And so…let me announce the contents of the next game." Old Zhan pointed to the table beside him. On it was fresh carrots, tender grass, cat toys, dog bones, etc. They were objects and food that would attract small animals.
"In an hour, you will try your best to attract as many small animals as you can. The things on the table can be used freely to achieve this goal. Of course, it doesn't count if you approach the animals yourselves…they have to come to you. After one hour, the crew will tally up how many animals you attracted in total. As for the measuring standard….as long as the animals are within a one-meter radius of you, it counts! There are sixty animals here and they can be counted repeatedly! Alright, good luck then!"
Everyone glanced at each other as Old Zhan backed away,
"Of course, the contestants that attract the least amount of animals will have to accept punishment. The last three contestants will get to have a taste of these delicious beverages…." Old Zhan pointed to a smaller table with three cups on it. One cup was filled with red liquid, another with a light green liquid and the last one filled with what looked like regular water,
"This is a cup of chili water, this is bitter gourd juice and this last one is plain sugar water. The last three contestants will have to participate in a lottery to see who drinks what~ Which one of you will be lucky enough to drink these special beverages, I wonder~ Ah, by the way, for the two players who are paired with our mystery guest stars, you will have a special rule. The number of animals they attract will be counted into your total, but it only works one-way so…. if your mystery guest star ends up in the bottom three, the both of you will be punished~ One drink per person~"
Wen Jiexi: "…."
Was the rule favorable to her or not? Could she count on Su Chenyu to attract lots of animals? She glanced at Su Chenyu's cold and indifferent expression….will we be okay….?
"Do we want to grab some tools?" Wen Jiexi glanced at the many different types of food and toys on the table…shouldn't they grab a cat toy or something?
"No need. Let's go in first and see what happens." Su Chenyu watched as Wen Ting dragged Huo Lin'er into the closure while Chu Heling and Li Lingqing also did the same.
"Alright, let's go in!" She wouldn't even know what tools to grab anyways so might as well just jump in. Wen Jiexi hopped over the fence and helped Su Chenyu jump over.
The men watched the women but didn't say anything and other than Mu Du, everyone else also just jumped over the fence.
"Sister Su, come sit over here!" Wen Jiexi patted the soft ground beside her and yawned lazily. She had just finished eating and felt so sleepy….maybe take a nap….
"Let's take it easy, it doesn't matter if we win or lose….so sleepy…"
"Then close your eyes for a bit." Su Chenyu patted Wen Jiexi's soft head and then gently put Wen Jiexi's head on her lap.
Whoa! Wen Jiexi's body stiffened and she was about to get up when Su Chenyu pressed her down gently,
"It's okay, weren't you tired?"
"Well…" Wen Jiexi nodded. She laid on her side, her cheeks lying against something soft and warm…despite the animal outfit Su Chenyu was wearing, she could still feel the heat radiating off Su Chenyu's skin….her ears blushed a dark red….
Li Lingqing: Wha! Has the naive duo finally been enlightened!
Chu Heling: Eh? So these two had that kind of a relationship?
Everyone else: We seemed to have seen something amazing?!!
Wen Jiexi didn't care what everyone was thinking and even if she could see their faces, she wouldn't notice anything. Instead, she felt extremely sleepy as she breathed in the unique and fragrant scent that belonged to Su Chenyu.
The sounds of even breathing came from the person below her and Su Chenyu felt the hot breaths brush against her thigh that tickled her skin. She slowly brushed Wen Jeixi's hair, her fingers running through the soft hair as a deep emotion flashed in her eyes.
This little fellow was much too trusting…..she should also find a chance to learn more about this person lying on her lap….should she send someone to investigate Wen Jiexi's family affairs?
However, Su Chenyu's quiet contemplation was interrupted as rabbits slowly approached them, one after another gathering around them. Then a cat also came over leisurely and even nested directly against the crook of Wen Jiexi's arm. The cat shook its fur, stretched its body leisurely, and then curled up to sleep next to Wen Jiexi.
Because of the cat's movements, a switch seemed to turn on inside the other small animals. The little rabbits quietly surrounded Wen Jiexi, a few of the bolder ones curling up directly on top of her. A dog placed its head on her shoulder and began to doze off. In the end, even some sheep approached and settled down next to the sleeping Wen Jiexi. And just like this, the animals began to pile up on top of one another…..
Su Chenyu was still perfectly fine but Wen Jiexi was almost completely covered by animals by now.
Su Chenyu looked down at the person who was lying on her thighs but had now disappeared in a blink of an eye: "….."
Originally the enclosure was filled with small animals but now there were only a few stray kittens here or there while the rest piled onto Wen Jiexi. Seeing this, everyone's mouth dropped open.
What is this? Is it possible to attract animals just by lying down?!!
In order to verify this hypothesis, Shi Junmao voluntarily laid down and closed his eyes. He didn't want to be the last one and face the punishment game! As soon as he closed his eyes, he felt a shadow loom over his head. He felt delighted and quietly opened his eyes a crack and almost spat out in shock! The dog that came over had actually stretched out a leg over his handsome face in a posture that obviously looked like it was going to pee!
He quickly avoided the terrible 'attack' with a roll and then patted his chest. Fortunately, he had moved quickly or else he would've faced a tragedy!
"Pfft-!"
"Hahaha!"
Everyone had watched Shi Junmao 'confirm' the hypothesis and naturally also saw what happened to him. In the end, they could only rub their noses as they could not compare themselves to Wen Jiexi.
An hour later, Old Zhan came back and froze as he saw a peculiar scene. Most of the contestants only had a few animals lying near them but why was there such a large animal pile beside Su CHenyu? Could it be that animals are like humans and could naturally sense who was the most famous of the bunch? Eh? Why did he feel like someone was missing?
"We seemed to have lost somebody? Where is Jiexi?" Old Zhan looked around the enclosure. Su Chenyu only glanced at him briefly while everyone else just yawned while looking at him lazily.
Old Zhan: If you guys keep treating me like this, you're going to regret it!!!
"Mhmm…." A low and muffled hum sounded out in the otherwise quiet grassland.
Then under everyone's gaze, the mountain of animals moved.
Su Chenyu pursed her lips slightly. Although she could not see clearly, she could still feel Wen Jiexi slightly rubbing against her things. She could tell the person below her was reluctant to leave her lap and that made her feel somewhat satisfied. Her numb legs no longer felt uncomfortable anymore.
The mountain of animals slowly moved due to Wen Jiexi's movements and the animals slowly slid down Wen Jiexi's body. She looked around in confusion as she still wasn't quite awake yet and did not realize her current state.
"Good afternoon, Sister Su…" Wen Jiexi yawned with a bewildered look in her eyes.
"Good afternoon…." Su Chenyu looked at Wen Jiexi's current cute state and could only feel her heart began to thump and throb. Wen Jiexi hair was a little messy and on her head was a yawning cat while a small rabbit perched on her right shoulder. Paired with her slightly red watery eyes….it was sooo cute!!!
Mu Du walked up to Old Zhan whose jaws almost fell to the ground. He patted their host on the shoulder in sympathy,
"You are not alone."
