Chapter 17: Pirates of the Past
The village near the Marine Base buzzed with fear and confusion. As Nami, Luffy, and Koby arrived, the sight of marines tumbling from the sky greeted them. Several uniformed figures screamed as they fell, landing in disheveled piles near the trio.
Koby's eyes widened in disbelief. "W-What's going on? Why are marines falling from the sky?!"
Luffy tilted his head, a wide grin spreading across his face. "Oh, it's gotta be Zoro."
"Zoro?" Koby repeated, looking more confused than ever.
One of the marines groaned, dragging himself to his feet. Koby rushed to him, helping him sit upright. "What happened?" he asked, concern etched into his voice.
The marine turned his glassy eyes toward Koby. "It's… it's the demon… Roronoa Zoro…" he rasped before collapsing into unconsciousness.
Koby stumbled back, pale as a sheet. "D-Demon?! Luffy, we have to get out of here! He's going to kill us!"
Luffy chuckled, completely unfazed. "Kill us? Nah, Zoro's cool. Let's go see how he's doing!"
As they walked up the hill toward the Marine Base, the air was filled with the sound of chaos—shouts, crashes, and the occasional scream. Suddenly, a massive figure hurtled down the slope toward them, hitting the ground with a loud thud.
Koby gasped. "I-Is that—?!"
Luffy's grin widened. "Oh, it's the axe guy!" He laughed, pointing at the unconscious form of Axe-Hand Morgan sprawled before them.
The villagers nearby froze in shock. "That's Captain Morgan!" one exclaimed, their voice a mix of awe and terror.
Koby gawked at Luffy. "That's a Marine officer! Axe-Hand Morgan is famous! How can you just laugh?"
Still chuckling, Luffy waved him off. "Famous or not, he's down for the count." Turning to Nami, he added, "Let's go meet Zoro. He's probably doing great."
Nami nodded, her expression curious. "Do you think he remembers us, too?"
As they approached the courtyard, a shrill voice interrupted them. "H-Help! It's the demon! Someone save me!"
A double-chinned boy, pudgy and pale, barreled toward them, screaming. He stopped abruptly behind Luffy, trembling and clinging to his leg. "Defend me, peasant! My father will have you killed if you don't!"
Luffy raised an eyebrow at the boy, then burst into laughter. "What's your deal, kid?"
Before the boy could reply, a familiar voice boomed across the courtyard. "Oi, Luffy!"
Luffy looked up, his grin widening even further. "Oy, Zoroooo!"
Standing in the center of the Marine Base's courtyard was Roronoa Zoro, his green hair gleaming in the sunlight. He rested casually against a wall, his swords strapped to his side, a calm but deadly aura emanating from him.
Zoro's sharp eyes landed on the group, softening slightly when he saw Luffy. "Took you long enough," he said with a smirk. "Oh, Nami's here, too."
"Yeah!" Luffy exclaimed as he leapt onto Zoro's head, ruffling his hair with both hands.
Zoro's eye twitched as he grabbed Luffy and yanked him off. "Get off my head, you idiot."
Koby's jaw dropped. "Luffy… you know the demon?!"
As the group stood in the courtyard, Zoro's sharp gaze landed on Koby, who was still trembling from the encounter. "I'm not a demon," Zoro said firmly, his brows furrowed in irritation.
Koby flinched, backing up slightly, his hands raised in apology. "I-I'm sorry!" he stammered, shaking nervously.
Luffy's laughter broke the tension as his stomach growled loudly. "Oi, Nami, do you have some money? I'm starving!" he said, rubbing his belly.
Nami crossed her arms, looking slightly annoyed, but eventually dug into her pouch and handed him some coins. "Here. Try not to waste it all."
"Woo-hoo! Thanks, Nami!" Luffy shouted, sprinting toward the village's small restaurant. "Oi, let's go eat some food!"
Zoro watched Luffy dart away, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. "He really hasn't changed," he muttered to himself.
Turning to Nami, Zoro's smirk faded into a thoughtful expression. "So, what's going on here? Why are we… back?"
Nami hesitated, glancing toward the horizon before answering. "I'm not entirely sure, but my guess is it has something to do with time travel. Maybe it's connected to that storm."
Koby, who had been trying to follow their conversation, gasped. "T-Time travel?!" he stuttered, looking at them with wide eyes.
Nami waved her hand dismissively. "It's nothing," she said quickly, avoiding further questions. "Come on, let's catch up to Luffy before he eats everything."
When they arrived at the small restaurant, their jaws collectively dropped. The room was filled with empty plates and bowls stacked high, and Luffy sat in the middle of it all, patting his stomach contentedly.
"Ah, that hit the spot!" Luffy said with a grin.
Nami stormed up to him, her face red with anger. "Luffy! Where's the money I gave you?"
"Used it all," Luffy answered casually, laughing as if it was no big deal.
Nami's fury exploded. "YOU SPENT IT ALL ON YOURSELF?!" she screamed, punching him several times in rapid succession.
"Ow! Ow! Nami, stop!" Luffy wailed, covering his head.
Before the commotion could settle, a group of navy soldiers entered the restaurant. Their leader stepped forward, looking hesitant. "Excuse me, but are you the ones who defeated Captain Morgan?"
Luffy pointed to Zoro with a laugh. "Yep, that was him!"
The navy soldier looked at Zoro in awe. "Thank you for saving us from Morgan's tyranny. We're deeply grateful, but… as part of Navy jurisdiction, you need to leave immediately."
"Sure," Zoro said nonchalantly, turning toward the exit.
As the group made their way out, one of the soldiers pointed to Koby. "Is the pink-haired boy with you?"
Luffy turned to glance at Koby, a mischievous grin on his face. "Never seen him before."
Koby blinked, confused. "What do you mean" His eyes widened in realization. A smile spread across his face as he bowed his head in thanks. "Thank you, Luffy."
With that, the Straw Hats made their way to their small boat. As they pushed off from the shore, the villagers and marines waved goodbye, shouting their thanks.
Nami, Zoro, and Luffy stood at the bow, watching the island grow smaller in the distance. They were back on the seas, and the adventure was just beginning.
