Chapter 725: How To Control Multiple Stuff
I entered the cargo bay with Mara and Amber flanking my sides.
We're going to test just how strong my Psionic abilities are by having me test out what I could lift with my telekinesis.
I was, of course, brimming with excitement as I looked around to see what I could start out with.
"Should I just start lifting anything I can see?" I asked, already thinking about trying to lift those heavy looking storage containers we have.
Mara sighed, "Normally I would recommend to do things slowly… But let's just go ahead and start with that one then."
She pointed at a specific metal container in the corner of the cargo bay that would normally require the crane to be moved around.
Alright! Let's do this!!
I tried to reach out with my mind, doing the same thing with the objects I had moved earlier in Mara's medical room where I tried to exert my will over them.
I was expecting to feel some kind of weight or something that would make it a strain for me to lift it up. But surprisingly, there was barely any resistance as I lifted the container up.
If I'm not wrong, the container should weigh at least half a ton at the very least but I'm lifting it up like it was nothing.
I turned to look at Amber and Mara, wondering what their reaction would be to this.
All I got was the two of them just staring at the container that was floating a good ten feet up in the air, none of them saying a single word.
I cleared my throat, "Ahem… Err… I'm guessing this isn't normal?"
That seemed to shake Amber out of her musings as she turned to me with wide eyes, "Do you… Feel any strain at all, Tera?"
I paused, trying to see if there was any weight at all but… There really didn't feel like there was any.
I shook my head, "There doesn't seem to be. I guess if you consider me needing to concentrate on imagining that the container remains in the air as a strain… Then that's the only strain I have right now."
Mara turned to me and pointed at a bigger container just beside the one I lifted, "Try something heavier, Tera."
I extended my concentration to the container, lifting it up to join the first one in the air.
I already knew that my maximum for now was lifting three up at the same time before I start struggling so I didn't bother relinquishing my control over the first one before lifting up the second one.
Even then, the only 'strain' I had was making sure that I kept both of the containers in my mind as I lifted them up and making sure that they didn't smack against each other when I lifted them up.
I turned back to Mara, "Umm… Am I supposed to feel the weight of the object that I'm trying to lift or something?"
She pursed her lips before raising a finger, "Wait here. Do not move."
The doctor then ran off, leaving me with two floating containers and Amber who was still staring up at the containers.
Amber then looked to the side and raised her hand, lifting a container at the other side of the cargo bay up into the air.
It doesn't look like she was struggling to lift them up either and I was about to say so when she lifted another hand which prompted another six containers to lift up into the air.
This time, I could see that her hand was trembling a little like she needed to exert more force to lift them up and the first container she lifted up even fell a few feet before it rose up again slowly.
As though confirming something, she dropped the containers back to their original positions to turn to me.
"Mara said that the maximum number you can lift is four?"
"Err… Yes? I mean… I would be struggling to maintain multiple different objects up in the air so if I lift them one by one… I find it hard to split my concentration four ways to lift all four objects up."
Amber frowned, "You're splitting… Wait… If that… Ah, let's wait for Mara to return first."
Mara returned with some handheld scanner which she then used to scan me and had the results of the scan displayed on a holographic screen beside her.
Once again, the diagram of the human popped up and the blue orbs were bouncing around inside the human diagram.
Mara stared at the screen and it was clear that she was not expecting that and, to be honest, I was also kind of expecting the blue orbs to be bouncing out of the diagram but that doesn't seem to be the case.
She pursed her lips at me, "Can you try to lift even more of them?"
Err… Sure.
I maintained my concentration on the two containers and reached out another part of my mind to focus on another container.
A third one joined the other two into the air and yet I still don't feel any strain on my body or my mind.
Mara scanned me again while I was doing that and the screen refreshed to show the exact same thing.
"What does this mean?" I asked, referencing the screen that was in front of her.
"I believe…" She started, still looking at the screen in front of her. "That your body has 'super adapted' to your Psionic powers at this point…"
Ah… I didn't really think about that possibility.
"So… Does that mean I don't need to worry about my powers causing my body to explode or something?"
"I would still monitor for a while more but I would say that the possibility of that happening is low at this point. For now, we'll continue to test your limits while I watch over your Psionic levels."
"Does that mean that I can just use my powers however I want?"
Mara opened her mouth to say something but paused before continuing, "I was going to say no but I think… Let's just go ahead and have you push your limits as much as you can. We should also get you to be used to using your own powers as well."
Amber popped in right then, "I still want to know something… Tera? You are already able to split your concentration at least three ways to control three different objects? Can you move those three things independently?"
I blinked at her and tried to do just that.
Let's see… I'll just have the first container rotate on the spot, then the second container revolve around the first one, then the second one will move back and forth beside the two.
The containers responded to my will and moved as I imagined.
I turned back to Amber who was just looking up at the containers with pursed lips.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
Amber didn't answer me and just turned to Mara, "She can split her concentration three ways…"
Mara sucked in a breath, "Four ways… She's talking to us while keeping them all up in the air."
"Four ways…" Amber muttered before turning back to me. "Tera… You are using your powers for the first time… No, scratch that… Normal Psionics would be struggling to even split their concentration two ways but you're doing it four ways."
I blinked, "Err… Does it help that I'm pretty good at multitasking?"
"This isn't just multitasking, Tera… This is actively concentrating on four different things at once. Even experienced Psionics struggle to do that."
"But… You just lifted out more stuff than I did?"
"Yes, but I was controlling the second group of objects as a single group. I wasn't controlling them as individual objects…"
I then turned to Mara, "But… You said I could work on splitting my concentration more to control more objects?"
Mara grimaced, "I thought you were controlling them as a single group of objects at that time… If I knew you were controlling them individually the entire time, I would have reacted very differently."
"What's the difference between controlling them individually and controlling them as a group?"
Amber sucked in a breath, "I could lift two groups of objects in the air. You can lift four groups of objects in the air, Tera. That's just one of the things that is different…"
Hmm… I wonder just how you would group multiple objects into a group though… Is it trying to just have my mind imagine multiple objects as one object instead?
Let me just try…
I moved the tree containers together and instead of thinking about them as three different containers, I imagined that they were just three containers being suspended inside an invisible orb and I'm controlling the orb.
I then moved my concentration to try and lift up a fourth container which would have made one of the containers fall but… That didn't happen. I was able to lift another container while the three containers still remained where they were.
Huh… So… That's interesting…
