Interlude Careful Where You…
The young girl jumped down from the branch. Her mother had signed on as a receptionist for the new guild. Her father? Well she never really knew him and had no idea where he was. Not that the young girl cared. She was much more interested in exploring her new home. So while Mom was busy discussing things with the Guildmaster. She had slipped out to explore the local forest. There was lots of nature to explore and it called to her. The young girl figured it would be safe enough. As long as she stayed close enough to the camp.
It had been a few hours since she managed to get away. Watching the workers clear trees and prepare land for a new town was interesting, but she was losing interest. Not to mention she had needs to take care of. Food was fine, she had pilfered a snack not that long ago. Back home she had a few favored bushes and knew right where to go when she needed to pee. Here? Not so much and she certainly wasn’t going to use whatever toilet they magicked up.
With that in mind, she set off in a direction that looked promising. Using the plants as her guide to find a good spot. She already knew where she liked to pee and she wanted a nice large bush. Maybe with some nice flowers nearby to look at.
As it would turn out, there was a nice bush not that far from her vantage point. It was a lovely large bush, in a small clearing surrounded by big trees. There was a stream not too far from the site. The area around the bush was a little muddy, perhaps from the stream? Ah, she didn’t care to figure out where some mud came from. The young girl would have preferred less mud, but she could fix that later. The bush was great. She crouched near the base of the bush, in a nice shady spot and let go.
Suddenly she was greeted by some angry squawking. Glancing down and of all things there was a rather muddy, horned chicken glaring at her, and making a lot of noise. While standing in her stream. She turned a little red, as her mother’s teachings made her use Inspect.

A horned chicken? Isn’t that a monster? She blinked and noticed the little stubby horn. The chicken gave another angry squawk and then pecked her. Just as her stream came to an end. She moved her leg out of the way to avoid the blow. It wasn’t very fast and it was the same level she was.
Seeing as she was under attack, she decided to try the only spell she knew. Her mom taught it to her, but she was admittedly not that good. It took several minutes of chanting and dodging some slow pecking attempts. Before she raised her hand, and unleashed a bolt of water. It flew true and slammed into the chicken’s face. Doing very little, except make it angrier. It bawked loudly and charged. She casually moved out of the way and hit it. Knocking it onto the ground. A moment later, she had the little chicken pinned. It was quite tiny actually, smaller than most chickens she had seen. Was it getting enough to eat?
For several moments, it struggled, pinned under her body before finally lying still. With that a notification popped in her mind.
You have subdued [Nameless] Horned Chicken Level 8 It has recognized you as a superior and is willing to be your pet. Do you accept this Horned Chicken as your pet? |
She blinked, studying the message with the chicken still beneath her. Pinned in the soil. A pet!? Mom had always told her no, every time she had asked for a pet. Now she had a chance for a chicken. It wasn’t exactly what she had in mind, and she knew her mom would complain. Saying that she should have found a cute little girl to bring home instead. Mom loved anyone cute and small. Perhaps a little too much, and her petting sessions? Those were dangerous, very dangerous.
It only took her a moment to decide. While she would have preferred something other than a chicken. A chicken was still better than no pet. She accepted!
Congrats! You have accepted [Nameless] Horned Chicken Level 8 as your pet. |
The girl looked over the poor chicken she had peed on. Now that the mud was gone and she wasn’t fighting it, she could give it a better look. Its feathers had a dusty red-brown hue. It had that stubby little horn, strong-looking feet and cute little wings. Its eyes were a lovely emerald green. Other than a few ruffled feathers and some injuries, it looked pretty healthy. Nothing she wanted to base a name off of. She spent a couple minutes thinking before a name popped in her head. It was perfect! That title having given her the idea. Tovi, she would call her Tovi. As soon as she decided, the system gave her another notification.

She settled on her haunches and just stared at her new status. This was new. She actually had a skills page now. Child classes were easy to level, and would normally allow one to pick from several archetypes upon reaching level ten. When that happened varied a little based on race. Those archetypes offered were what allowed someone to choose their path in life. Yet here she was with an adult class and under level ten. No choice whatsoever. Just perfect. Well at least now she could gain levels through combat, so there was that. Just what was she going to tell Mom? After a while she finally pulled herself up and with Tovi in tow headed back to town. Where she soon found a bit of a commotion. With Mom rather busy because of it.
