Chapter 28: Tryouts
Suddenly they were in a classroom.
And somehow, a class of superheroes and Skinwalkers led by an alien space guardian, was the least odd aspect of the world they inhabited.
Arisia stood at the front of the silver and blue walled room with metal desks and padded chairs like she was used to such an enviroment. Like Lucien hasn't always known her as the new girl on the block— page? And eternal student.
She wore the change well. It spoke to how the current iteration of the dc universe he existed in had aged onward.
When she began to speak, he was taken from his existential observations and brought back into the current.
"Today's training will be much less singularly focused. The Guardians of Oa gave me strict directives to train up Green Lantern Lucien Lamb and destroy the parallaxian threat on earth, but we have other warriors here with the power to help so this only seems natural." Arisia explained.
"You won't get…. I don't know— fired?" Beastboy asked.
"Green Lanterns can't get fired, you ape." Lagoon Boy replied from his seat beside him.
"I thought you'd know that after all the b.s with Hal—…." Redhood stopped as Red Robin looked over at him at the back of the class.
"No." Arisia replied, "I will not get fired. I may get put on training details in different sectors, though."
"Isn't that what you're doing now?"
Arisia let the silence be her answer before continuing, "Todays session will be focused on stealth and efficiency."
"Literally half of us are ninjas." Arsenal replied.
"Half isn't good enough. Now will you all stop interrupting?" Lucien said from the front of the class.
Arsenal did an exaggerated salute from his seat behind him.
Lucien brought up the middle finger. Constantine found the interraction funny from his seat off to the side.
Arisia continued, "Yes, many of you may have decades of martial arts— and even stealth focused training, but few of you have extended experiencing facing our current threat." She held up her ring and the energies of her imagination and will began to take shape.
The creature was obviously human with a few tweaks. Dark veins, glowing eyes, fangs and a hideous bloodsmoke flowing from their pores.
"That being individuals afflicted with the new parallaxian strain of vampirism."
"Yuck." Signal commented.
"Because of their abilities, they will be strongest in enviroments where they can play on human fear. Closed off and dark spaces. For this, we will be playing a combative capture the flag style competition in a maze." Arisia explained.
"I think you forgot were limited on real estate." Green Arrow said.
"I think you forgot what my ring does." Arisia replied.
Lucien fought off a smirk— effortlessly, as Arisia looked his way, "And his."
"What are you saying?"
"You will construct the maze." Arisia said, "This is your next step in training. You're proficient in many forms of combat and your power output is above average. Now we need to fine tune it by working your mind."
"How long are we doing this for?"
"Three to five hours."
"Wolf spirit it is." Vixen spoke to her necklace.
"Alright then. Let's get to it. Green-Arrow, Arsenal, Red-Hood, Bat-Girl, Jay, don't bother getting up."
***
They took over the main area once again. Now a sizable chunk of them missing. Bruce was obviously affected negatively, but Lucien could feel him focus on the positive.
One of his robins was present and mission oriented.
"I'm not saying I'm on board to sprout fur and claws but you're the most learned source on our enemy so, I'm in." Red Robin explained.
Arisia nodded. We will begin now." She flew up towards the ceiling. Lucien followed.
At forty feet up, they hovered as the rest of the team stretched and warmed up.
Arisia looked to Lucien. "What do you think?"
"I think I was having a magic fueled adrenaline rush when I first told everyone to become like me. I think it was abrupt. But I have few options…..and few who agree. But more than I would've guessed." Lucien explained.
Arisia nodded, "You know what to do."
"Vaguely…" Lucien groaned before looking down at them all. His mind went to work then, imagining the intricate pathways and corridors of a massive maze.
His lantern ring sizzled and steamed. The veins in his hand bulged and radiated with verdant oan energy that trailed up to his forearm.
"You have a strong will, Lucien." Arisia said.
"Mhm…." Lucien replied as the maze flickered into existence, sometimes made of brick and other times smooth cement.
"Assumedly from your taxing life as a special forces operative— before your planet was overtaken."
Lucien had no reply.
"You were a violent man. Lots of anger kept at bay by the militaristic discipline instilled in you. But angry and violent all the same. Violent and angry men are rarely creative. It's why Reds can't make constructs. It's why you struggle with a maze." Arisia explained.
"Quiet."
The maze fizzled and lost form.
"C'mon, monster-lantern! We need some construction guys in here or something." Vixen said as she knocked on one of the walls and it cracked.
Lucien growled. The scale was too big for so much detail. The individuals inside altered his focus and geometric understanding. It was taxing in a way he wasn't used to. Maybe the guardians we—
"Quiet your mind." Arisia said.
"Get back in the Ranger-grave." Lucien translated her words to something that worked for him internally.
"Don't just think about the maze. Remember you're not making a picture. You're making a construct. Think about how the walls will fit around your allies. Think about the smell of your imagined material— use the detail of memories to influence your reality. Think about its physical properties. Texture, boiling point, everything matters."
The maze walls fluctuated and flickered once more before rising higher, now fortified by steel and topped by turrets. Windows and secret doorways split up the design of the walls and offered intersecting lines of fire.
"This…. Is a little more than a maze." Arisia commented.
"Mhm." Lucien replied before thinking, "It was my first mission."
"Very well. It's time I add the finishing touches." Arisia spawned in constructs of the vampire scourge after cutting the lights to the whole facility.
Suddenly all that glowed was the maze and the beasts within, now beginning to surround the heroes inside with them.
"Alright. So I assume the flags are on the north and south end?" Arsenal asked from within the maze.
"No." Arisia said, "The vampires are the flags. Whoever destroys the most of my constructs wins."
Lucien hardened his will as the battle took place. His eyes focused on the winged warrior at the north end. Her mace radiated with nth metal energies.
