Chapter 28: Chapter 28
Meanwhile, the mafia members realize that their boss, Nickel, is dead, and they are thrown into a huge panic.
After a brief commotion, they soon settled into a serious discussion about "who" killed their boss.
In the process, a member of the gang called himself the witness.
His name was Valdron Mekalana.
He was smoking a cigarette at the time, with the second floor window open, when he saw a woman jump from the third floor, where the boss was.
At first, he thought he was mistaken, but when he heard that the boss was dead in the room, he was convinced that the woman was an assassin.
He told his gang, and they were outraged, united in the idea that they must find her and avenge their boss.
And now.
Peering through a folding telescope at the restaurant's fifth-floor window, Waldron frowned.
'Brown hair, wearing a pure white knit, a maroon coat on her lap, a plain-looking shoulder bag beside her chair. On her feet, she's wearing black flats, and she's tall for a woman....'
She looks exactly like the woman who killed Boss, except she's wearing sunglasses.
After searching the neighborhood, you finally find the woman who assassinated your boss.
'She's a fucking bitch....'
Valdron lowered his binoculars and gritted his teeth.
How dare she kill her boss and then dine at the restaurant in luxury.
It was as if he was mocking his entire organization.
Calming his rage, Valdron folded the binoculars and slipped them into his arms, then pulled out his communicator.
Glaring at the woman slicing steaks on the restaurant's fifth floor, he pressed the transmit button.
"I've got the woman who killed the boss. She's at Das Aventricht Restaurant, 22 Rayburn Street. She'll be finishing her meal soon, so I want everyone in the organization to meet me there."
*.
As you finish your meal and walk out of the restaurant, Mr. Cartman bows his head.
"This is a great disrespect to you, my lady, and I have ten mouths to feed, so I must once again apologize politely."
Lucy is silent, and Daniel speaks for her.
"You don't need to apologize again, I'm sure Miss Meirin understands, don't you, Miss Meirin?"
Lucy nodded reluctantly as Daniel gave her a look.
Seeing that, Daniel smiled and spoke.
"Well, I guess we'd better get going, then."
"Alas. Of course. It has been an honor to speak with you, Captain."
"It has been an honor for me, too, to speak with an Inspector so dedicated to the Empire, then."
With a bow, Daniel turns and walks away with Lucy.
After they had walked some distance, he glanced back, stroked his chin a few times, then turned and walked the other way.
Daniel breathes a sigh of relief.
"You can speak now."
Lucy paused for a moment, having regained her freedom of speech.
"...You've been treating me like an idiot."
"I didn't treat you like an idiot, I treated you like an aphasic person. And as I told you, I was only out to save you from the Security Service police."
There was no mistaking it.
Without Daniel's help, Lucy would have had to face Cartman's suspicions head-on.
Lucy's pride was bruised at being aided by the enemy, but she had to admit it.
"I will repay this debt someday."
Daniel broke out in a cold sweat at Lucy's softly whispered words.
He couldn't tell if she meant "help" or "kill.
Daniel nodded shakily, since he couldn't read Lucy's mind.
"...I appreciate the gesture, but there's no need to try to repay it, so why don't we go our separate ways?"
If they delayed any longer, the dessert shop would be closed.
Daniel would have loved to have a dessert now, but Lucy shook her head.
"I'm sorry, I don't think so."
What does that suddenly mean? Daniel, feeling strangely uneasy, blinked still, and Lucy squinted at her surroundings.
"Listen as you walk. We're being followed. There are eyes not only behind us, but across the street and a block ahead."
"Followed?" Daniel's eyes narrowed immediately, scanning the pedestrians walking down the street.
Lucy was right, some of the men in suits were making suspicious movements.
Some had their hands in their pockets, as if they were ready to draw their guns at a moment's notice.
The movements were clumsy for intelligence agents.
But they were clearly organized. That's the sign of a private organization.
If members of a private organization are carrying guns, there's only one answer.
"They're mafia.
Daniel frowned, feeling his bones ache as he realized that even under the guise of pretense, they were targeting Lucy.
"Ms. ..., what have you been doing that you're being followed by mafia members?"
But Lucy didn't answer.
Her sharp eyes quickly assessed the situation, and she tightened her grip on Daniel's hand.
It was a cold but gentle grip.
"Captain. I'm going to jump into an alleyway twenty paces ahead of you, and if you're with me, you're going to be their target, too, and you're going to have to come with me if you want to live."
I didn't particularly want to save Daniel.
But if he died, the Empire would want to know what happened, and Lucy, who was with him the day he died, would be caught up in their investigation.
That was the last thing she wanted, so she didn't let go of Daniel's hand.
"One moment, sir. If you have any suggestions, please discuss them with me at ...!"
When they reached twenty steps, Lucy spun around and stomped the ground.
Daniel had no choice but to run with her, drawn by her hand.
"Shit, she's running!"
"That bitch got me, chase her!"
"Kill her!"
I hear shouts from behind me, and a gunshot rings out.
A blind bullet whizzes past his ear with a wind-cracking sound.
Ducking his head instinctively, Daniel sped up his pace and glared at Lucy.
'What the hell did ... do to earn your grudge? Did you kill a mafia boss?
It was embarrassing, but now was not the time for idle questions.
"Left!"
Daniel turned the corner of the alley at Lucy's command.
Halfway down the alley, Lucy ducked behind a nondescript industrial dumpster.
Daniel did the same and caught his breath.
"...Why are you hiding all of a sudden? Are you expecting to take on the entire organization here?"
Lucy nodded and pulled a red button detonator from her shoulder bag.
She'd planted them inside the walls on either side of the deserted alleyway, just in case they were being chased, and she was going to use them now.
'Hmm. That's a lot of preparation....'
Daniel understood roughly what Lucy was trying to do, and he waited with bated breath.
"They've gone into a dead end! Chase them!"
"Shoot him on sight, and kill the asshole next to him!"
The shouting gang members rushed into the alley.
But Lucy and Daniel are nowhere to be seen.
Unaware that Lucy and Daniel were hiding behind a trash can, the gang members walked inside, puzzled.
"What's going on? I thought I saw them go in."
"Did they go over the wall? Did they climb over that high thing?"
"Shit. Did you check behind the dumpster?"
The voices of the gang members gradually drew closer.
Without hesitation, Lucy pressed the button on the detonator.
Immediately afterward.
Kwaaaaaaaaang─!
With a tremendous explosion, the wall burst open and burst into flames.
The impact was strong enough to shake the ground, and Daniel couldn't help but squeeze his eyes shut.
"Ugh. Shit...."
Tinnitus rings in his ears.
After taking a deep breath, Daniel slowly opens his eyes.
He grits his teeth and gets to his feet.
He looks back to the scene of the explosion and sees the mafia members lying among the fallen bricks.
Nearly thirty of them lay on the ground, bleeding and moaning.
"Ha...."
As I stared at the scene in disbelief, I heard new footsteps coming from beyond the alley.
I put my hand to my holster, thinking it was the rest of the gang, but the footsteps were light and airy.
"Explosion! Did you hear that?"
"What's going on, did a pipe burst?"
"I don't know, but let's go, it might be a scoop!"
Sure enough, there were reporters rushing to wherever there was an incident.
Daniel relaxed and removed his hand from his holster.
"Do you have any idea what you've done...?"
As he spoke, he looked for Lucy, but she was nowhere to be seen.
Did she run away the moment the explosion happened, over the wall, that high?
As Daniel breathes heavily, the reporters rush in.
At the same time, they stiffen.
A man in his thirties lying bleeding in an alleyway, and a man in a military officer's uniform standing in front of him, is overwhelming.
The reporter, stunned, looked down and then widened his eyes.
"Aren't these... Nickel's men?"
Each of the fallen men had a tattoo of a hyena on their neck.
This meant they were members of Nickel's organization, one of the mafia bosses.
The other reporters looked up as they realized what was happening.
Smiles spread across their faces as they realized the officer's identity.
They smelled a scoop.
"It's Captain Daniel Steiner!"
"...What? Oh my God, it's the real Captain Daniel!"
While the reporters were talking, citizens who had heard the explosion began to arrive one by one.
When they reached the alley, they looked at each other with the same expressions as the reporters and began to chatter.
Daniel, who now had an ominous sense of foreboding, raised his hands.
"Gentlemen. You're all under the wrong impression, this wasn't me-"
"Gather around here, everyone! Captain Daniel Steiner has served the Empire again! He's taken down a mafia organization!"
The reporter's voice drowns out Daniel's words.
The citizens, believing the reporter, soon begin to cheer and chant Daniel's name.
As the applause began to pour in, Daniel closed his eyes in half-give-up.
'This is crazy....'
It was nothing new now.
