Chapter 162: A Call from Magnus
For the next three days, the Emperor remained with Axis, personally observing the Apothecaries as they replaced the gene-seed of the War Hounds.
He did not relax until every last member of the former XII Legion had been successfully implanted with Axis's gene-seed and showed no signs of rejection. With all of Angron's genetic material recovered, the Emperor finally breathed a sigh of relief.
The taint of Angron's fall had now been all but erased.
All of his gene-sons were gone, leaving only a stock of corrupted gene-seed awaiting destruction.
"Axis," the Emperor said, "I will have the Mechanicum send personnel to establish basic starport facilities and Astartes augmentation chambers for you. They will also bring administrators to help you govern this world. For now, I must depart."
The Emperor intended to leave the planet Nuceria and rejoin the Great Crusade.
He had been away from the front lines for far too long. For ten years, Horus had commanded in his stead, and it was imperative that he returned to the fray.
"Rest assured, Father," Axis replied, "Once the Mechanicum arrives, I will dispatch my first wave of sons to begin their own crusade. I, however, will remain on this planet for a time.
"I will not lead the War Hounds into battle until every one of them has completed the replacement of their superhuman organs and can achieve the Golden Transformation."
According to the Emperor's original plan, Axis was to leave Nuceria immediately after settling its affairs and lead his new legion into the Great Crusade, choosing a homeworld from the planets he conquered along the way.
But since he had now chosen Nuceria, it was only natural that Axis would wish to stay and oversee the fortification of his new base.
"I await news of your victories, Axis. Make me proud," the Emperor said.
Axis already possessed considerable combat experience, having fought alongside Russ for nearly thirty years during the Great Crusade.
Furthermore, a contingent of his legionaries were veterans from the Space Wolves, meaning his forces were seasoned in the art of war.
Combined with the full strength of the War Hounds, Axis's legion now numbered over 210,000 Astartes. This was fewer than the Dark Angels' 250,000, but nearly equal to the strength of the Ultramarines.
At that time, the Ultramarines' numbers only swelled beyond 250,000 to become the largest legion after the Third Rangdan Xenocides.
In truth, with the vast resources of the 500 Worlds of Ultramar, the Ultramarines could have rapidly expanded their ranks to become the most numerous legion at any time they wished.
After concluding his business with Axis, the Emperor departed with his fleet and all of his Custodes.
He traveled to the western front of the Great Crusade to reunite with Horus and assume command of the battles to come.
Back on Nuceria, Axis prepared not only to receive his new legionaries but also a batch of newly trained Librarians.
Ten years prior, after his own gene-seed had been stabilized on Holy Terra, Axis had dispatched a transport ship.
It carried a sample of his gene-seed to Magnus with a request for him to train a contingent of Librarians.
Since the inception of the Librarian Project, Magnus had been exceptionally busy. In addition to fighting in the Great Crusade, he was responsible for training the Librarians of every legion.
He had, however, paid special attention to the recruits for Axis's legion. The two Primarchs often communicated within the Immaterium, exchanging knowledge on the application of psychic powers.
"It has been too long, Magnus," Axis said, his psychic essence reaching out through the Warp to connect with his brother.
"Indeed it has, Axis," Magnus's voice echoed in his mind, "The two dozen Librarians I have selected for you are all exceptionally talented individuals. I have given you the very best."
Magnus felt a profound gratitude toward Axis.
At their very first meeting, Axis had helped him resolve the mutations afflicting his gene-sons, using a strange energy called Ki to evolve their gene-seed into a perfect state.
Before leaving, Axis had also given him the sibaman seed which had since grown into a unique gene-son of his. Although a bit shy, Gris had went on to become Magnus's most trusted aide, a closely guarded secret within the legion.
His combat prowess was second only to Magnus himself, surpassing even Ahriman in both psychic might and martial skill. The perfection of their gene-seed and the power of Ki had brought immeasurable benefits to the Thousand Sons. In private, the two Primarchs had become the closest of friends.
"I have complete faith in your judgment," Axis replied, "Librarians are crucial to the success of an Astartes Legion. Their presence should be greatly expanded. Every legion should have at least several dozen, perhaps even a hundred, Librarians stationed with them at all times."
"Haha! Your support is invaluable to me," Magnus chuckled, "To think you are now the Primarch of the XII Legion. The last time we met, you were still a Company Captain of the Space Wolves!" It was difficult to imagine that in just a few decades, Axis had ascended to a station equal to his own.
"I was kept in the dark myself, you know," Axis admitted, "When I underwent the augmentation surgery on Holy Terra, the Emperor told me I was being made into a Custodian. It turned out he was making me into a Primarch."
While he had not been born of the Warp, every other aspect of Axis's augmentation was that of a Primarch, with some improvements even beyond the original process.
Such an operation, however, could only have succeeded on Axis. A normal human undergoing such a procedure would be lucky to survive at all, let alone wield the power of a Primarch.
"With your backing, along with that of Sanguinius, Jaghatai Khan, and Russ, my Librarian Project has advanced rapidly. I owe you a great deal for that," Magnus said.
"Think nothing of it between us. Just give my Librarians some extra care while you train them. Have your sons suffered any recurrence of the Flesh-Change these past years? And has that blue bird bastard troubled you again?" Axis asked.
"Rest assured, I am training your Librarians personally, and I have chosen only the most powerful and stable psykers. As for the Flesh-Change," Magnus said with a sigh, "to be honest, we have had a few instances over the years. But the moment we infuse them with Ki, the mutations halt immediately."
While no son had fully succumbed to the Flesh-Change, a number within the legion had shown the initial symptoms.
Thanks to the saibaman that Axis had provided, however, all of those afflicted with minor mutations were purified by the power of Ki. The Flesh-Change was now, for all intents and purposes, under their control.
"As for the blue bird-man," Magnus continued, "ever since Father's intervention, aided by my own psychic strength and the Ki of Gris, it has not appeared in my dreams again."
"That's good. But be on your guard. I was recently attacked by one of those bastards myself, the Blood god," Axis revealed, sharing a small part of the incident.
He completely omitted any mention of Angron. From that day forward, Axis was the one and only Primarch of the XII Legion.
The Emperor had ordered Angron's name expunged from every Imperial record. The War Hounds themselves would hold this secret as their legion's highest canon, and their father would forever be Axis alone.
Beyond the captains, Axis even planned to subject all members of the War Hounds to a memory wipe, ensuring the secret would never be revealed.
According to the Emperor, the other Primarchs could not yet be told that one of their brothers had been utterly corrupted by Chaos.
"Those wretched beasts! You must be careful, Axis," Magnus warned. "By the way, I contacted you for another reason besides updating you on the Librarians' training. There is a matter I wish to ask of you."
"Name it," Axis said. "If I can help, I will."
"The request is not mine, but of another brothers," Magnus explained, "Over the past few decades of the Great Crusade, I have fought alongside Sanguinius many times, and we have become good friends.
"He is a staunch supporter of my Librarian Project, and the scale of the Librarius within his own legion is quite vast. While campaigning with the Blood Angels, I came across his legion's secret.
"Their gene-seed, too, is flawed. Though he is the noble and holy Great Angel, his gene-sons are nothing short of vampires, and their thirst for blood is…unsettling."
Magnus felt a sense of kinship with Sanguinius in their shared affliction. Both of their legions carried a genetic curse, though Sanguinius's was typically better concealed.
After Magnus had discovered the truth, Sanguinius had confided in him, and in return, Magnus had told him of the Flesh-Change that had once plagued his own legion.
"So," Axis deduced, "you told Sanguinius about my Ki."
"I did," Magnus confirmed. "You were able to solve the problems of my legion, of Russ's legion, and the 'Great Ape' transformation of your own. I believe you can solve Sanguinius's problem as well. I was wondering if you would be willing to help him."
"Since you are the one asking, I would love to. However, I cannot leave Nuceria at the moment," Axis replied. "Why don't you ask the Great Angel to come see me here when he has the chance? I will see if I can do anything to help him with this problem."
The Blood Angels Legion.
At their core, they were a legion of vampires, yet their gene-father was a perfect angel.
