Chapter 159: Blood for the Blood God!
Axis nodded, and then he and the Emperor transformed into a streak of golden light, descending directly upon the battlefield.
Most of the gladiators on the field had already been defeated and captured alive by Axis's sons.
At this moment, the only one still resisting was a ferocious, hulking figure wielding two axes and roaring in a frenzy. This man was Angron.
At his feet lay the bodies of more than a dozen warriors from the Golden Knights Legion. Even with the Golden Transformation inherited from their gene-father, they had still suffered losses against this rampaging, bloodthirsty giant.
But these fallen warriors of the Golden Legion were not dead.
As long as a Space Marine was not immediately torn to shreds, their specially engineered Sus-an Membrane could activate, placing them into a state of suspended animation. With some specialized stimulation from a Legion Apothecary afterward, they could be revived.
The Legion members in this state of stasis were all retrieved, while more of their brothers pushed forward, activating their transformations to contain Angron's assault.
Even facing a siege by a thousand Space Marines, Angron showed no fear.
However, these figures, shimmering with a golden light, were stronger than any opponent he had ever faced before.
The armor they wore was also incredibly resilient. By now, Angron had fallen into a berserk state.
His eyes turned crimson, and a faint, blood-red aura began to seep from his body.
This sanguine aura made the surrounding Golden Knights feel a sense of unease, as if an insane battlelust was washing over them.
With a flash of brilliant light, the Emperor suppressed Angron with his psychic power, forcing him to his knees.
The primarch could only let out an enraged roar at the Master of Mankind.
"Axis, there is something wrong with that red aura on him. It feels like the power of that blood Bastard," the Emperor said with a frown.
Angron's condition was extremely unstable.
The blood-red energy emanating from him was clearly of the Warp, his eyes had become bloodshot, and even his skin had begun to turn red.
Axis furrowed his brow.
What was going on? Was Angron already being targeted by that bastard?
During his last journey into the Warp, Axis had witnessed the wars between the daemons of Khorne and Slaanesh, so he recognized this bloody, berserk power.
He stared intently at the subdued Angron. A crimson mist was seeping from the primarch's distorted skin, congealing in the air into the shape of grinning skulls.
Seeing that Angron was restrained, several Golden Knights moved to capture the furious giant.
"Do not go near him." Axis suddenly raised a hand, sensding a wave of Ki that halted the three warriors who were about to bind Angron, "Stand back! He is mutating!"
As if to prove Axis's words, six bone-white spurs suddenly erupted from Angron's back.
His spine, which had been bent under the Emperor's psychic pressure, began to twist with a sickening crunch.
A storm of blood-red energy erupted from Angron. The primarch's face started to contort, his teeth jutted out, and his skin turned a deep, furious crimson.
Terrifying Warp energy surged from Angron, so potent that the surrounding Golden Knights dared not approach.
None of them understood what was happening. At that moment, Axis's sons felt an indescribable desire for battle, a terrifying rage swelling from the depths of their souls.
Some of the nearby Golden Knights could not suppress this influence; their hair instantly turned gold as they activated their transformation, pushing it to the five-fold limit.
The power of Khorne did not affect Axis, even as it washed over him.
But it affected his sons.
However, because Axis's own power did not originate from the Warp, his warriors were only influenced to become more battle-hungry, not to lose control completely.
After noticing their abnormal state, the superhuman organs supporting the mental states of astrates activated, unaffected by the warp, suppressing the rage.
Once the anger in their hearts subsided, they reverted from their Golden Transformations.
That blood-red aura had a profound effect on them, igniting the latent battle lust within their genes.
It was the exact same sensation Axis had felt when he first encountered the power of Khorne.
None of the Golden Knights understood what this bizarre scene meant, for at this time, Space Marines had no knowledge of Chaos.
"All personnel, withdraw immediately. Retreat several kilometers. No one is to approach except for Axis," the Emperor ordered with a cold expression, increasing the strength of his psychic restraints.
The existence of Chaos was a secret that had to be kept. It was not appropriate for these ordinary Space Marines to remain here.
Axis's sons had performed well, at least well enough to obey orders. Had they been from some of the more ferociously battle-hungry Legions, they would have likely succumbed to Khorne's influence and fallen into a bloodthirsty frenzy.
The red beast before them let out a series of pained screams, clearly being corrupted by the powers of Chaos.
This son of his was not developing according to the future he had foreseen. In his visions, this son was supposed to have served him for at least a century, not to be corrupted by the power of Chaos at their very first meeting.
Upon receiving the Emperor's command, the surrounding Golden Knights did not hesitate.
They immediately carried away their comatose comrades and the captured gladiators, evacuating the battlefield.
Several of the conscious gladiators tried to struggle, but the Golden Knights forcibly dragged them away.
They did not understand why their commander, who had been fine just moments ago, their brother-in-arms who had fought alongside them, had transformed into such a terrifying monster.
Had those detestable slave masters done something horrible to Angron again?
"Father-in-law, is Angron transforming into a Daemon Prince?" Axis said, asked.
So, Khorne found an opportunity to turn Angron into his Daemon Prince ahead of schedule?
"No, this is not the power a Daemon Prince of Khorne can wield. He is becoming something greater," the Emperor stated, his brow furrowed.
Angron's body was twisting and changing. His human flesh and soul was being utterly destroyed, replaced by a terrifying power from the Warp.
This was not a standard ascension. Angron was not undergoing a ritual to become a Daemon Prince.
He was being remade, abandoning his humanity, in soul and body, becoming an entirely to become a Greater Daemon.
Something was wrong, terribly wrong.
This was completely different from the future he had foreseen. Angron was destined to betray him, yes, but he was meant to become a Daemon Prince at best.
Why…was he transforming into a Greater Daemon?
Had the Four Chaos Gods found Angron way before he did and corrupted him through some unknown means.
But what was their purpose in doing this? A Greater Daemon appearing before him had only one path: destruction.
There was no other outcome. A single Greater Daemon was nothing; even a dozen of them would be beings the Emperor could extinguish with a mere thought.
Even a primarch transformed into a Greater Daemon would only be slightly stronger than average.
If the Chaos Gods had discovered Angron first, there was no reason to have him transform right in front of him. The logical move for Khorne would have been to spirit Angron away, to bring him directly before his Brass Throne.
"A Greater Daemon! But aren't Greater Daemons effectively a part of the Chaos Gods themselves?" Axis asked, "Theoretically, the highest a mortal can ascend is to Daemon Prince, or perhaps a Champion."
"I do not know. This is something I have never seen before. But the power of the Chaos Gods is beyond your comprehension. In the past, they rarely focused their attention on the Materium. There may be no prior instances of this, but that does not mean they cannot do it," the Emperor replied with a frown.
It mattered little. Even if Angron became a Greater Daemon, he could still destroy him.
Axis nodded at his words, shocked. His understanding was being rewritten befor his very eyes.
"Shall we destroy him now?"
"Every Greater Daemon's soul is essentialy part of the a Chaos God. They must be killed by special means, otherwise destroying their physical form will only banish them back to the Warp. And as it happens," the Emperor said, drawing the immense golden sword he wore at his side, "I have a weapon that can kill Greater Daemons."
The blade blazed with a golden light that burned like fire.
Just as the Emperor prepared to slay Angron, a voice suddenly echoed in Axis's mind.
"We meet at last, Axis. Why would you pledge yourself to that one? I can grant you far greater power. You and I, we are kindred spirits. You must understand that!
"I have watched your battles. I saw your bloodlust. It was a perfect symphony of violence. I have felt the rage in your heart. A truly magnificent power, is it not?" a coarse, wild voice resounded.
The instant he heard the voice, Axis instinctively activated his Super Saiyan transformation and raised his psychic defenses to their absolute limit.
He knew exactly who was speaking to him. Khorne.
"Get out of my head!" Axis roared, channeling all his psychic might into the shout.
"Why be so wary of me? You and I are the same," the voice of Khorne whispered in his ear, "You love battle. So do I. You love slaughter. So do I. You love destruction. As do I. We share so many common interests. I will share my power with you. Bloodlust. Fury. Violence. All of it."
