Warhammer Divine Throne

Chapter 117, Discussing Reinforcements_3

Passing through the deep middle of the palace, you can quickly reach the Central Hall, the venue historically used for the King Selection Council and Knight Assembly. The upper walls of the hall are adorned with stained glass and six murals that reflect religious connotation, knightly style, and legal significance. Portraits of the earliest twelve Holy Grail Knights tell the glorious history of past kings.

Beyond the Central Hall lies the King's office, where the royal throne is adorned with red velvet and decorated with gold threads and diamonds.

The current Knight King, "Tiger" Dinua Jean Richard, sits upon the throne.

This Knight King has aged. Unlike Emperor Karl Franz of the Empire who is in his early thirties, Richard is already over a hundred years old. The once majestic visage has unknowingly aged; wrinkles have crept across his cheeks, his black hair has turned grizzled, and his once clear eyes have become clouded. Even with his Legendary Tier strength, Richard has reached the age of decline.

Yet he must strive to clearly read the documents on the table because he has much to manage.

Since the Dor Tower incident, Brittania's national strength has gradually weakened. Distrust grew heavy among the dukes, fraught with conflicts. After the death of Knight King Taylor, succeeding kings John I and John II were both tyrannical. The Kingdom of Knights regressed further, especially under John II, who, in his quest to gain the dukes' support for his unceasing wars of invasion, devolved powers such as tariff-making, minting, and garrisoning to the dukes.

Thus, twenty-four years ago, John II was overthrown by the Lake God Witch and the dukes. In the subsequent King Selection Council, the dukes chose Duke of Anglong, "Tiger" Dinua Jean Richard, who was most renowned and virtuous among knights.

The Duke of Anglong was already over eighty years old at the time. In terms of ability, he was not particularly outstanding, having failed twice in the Holy Grail Trial and remaining just a Mission Knight. His past bravery and decisiveness gradually gave way to obstinacy and radicalism. His capability in Internal Affairs was considered average, and he had not fought in a long time.

However, the dukes and the Lake God Witch still chose him because Richard was a good man. His character was relatively mild, and he knew how to mediate the heavy conflicts among the dukes. His governance philosophy inclined towards maintaining the existing order and ensuring the dukes' interests were not harmed.

Thus he sat on the throne to this day.

Richard, naturally, did not want to be a puppet. Since his coronation, the Knight King has employed many means to consolidate power. The most effective was the political marriage of his daughter to the Duke of Leonais. Then he had his son Charles marry the granddaughter of the Duke of Montfort. Through these political marriages, he ensured stability in the northern part of the Kingdom, although the most powerful northern force, "The Upright" Louis, Duke of Connet, did not acquiesce to the Knight King's authority.

Subsequently, he declared a "Knightly War" to levy a fixed military tax from all the dukes within the Kingdom. Although this caused dissatisfaction among the dukes, Richard successfully salvaged the Kingdom's finances, which had been nearing bankruptcy due to the previous king's extravagance and war-mongering.

Next, he planned to lead the knights in a counterattack against the Beastman Tribe entrenched in the forest. However, just as the King was contemplating the arrangement of forces and garnering the dukes' support, a courtier's urgent footsteps interrupted his thoughts.

"My Majesty, a request for aid from Marinburg!"

"A massive Green-skinned Army is gathering at the Ginter Mine, and our allies need our support!"
