Chapter 28: The Fall Of The Citadel Pt. 3
The atrium was vast, its cavernous space lit by a sickly green glow emanating from the machinery lining the walls. Rows of mind-controlled soldiers stood motionless, their bodies tethered to the machines by tubes that pumped a strange, viscous fluid into their veins. Metal helmets adorned their heads, the faint hum of unseen energy signaling that they were being conditioned like cattle in a factory.
Wanda Maximoff and Eska Vryn stepped into the room cautiously, the oppressive air pressing down on them. Eska froze mid-step, her sharp eyes locking onto the face of one of the soldiers.
"Oh my god," Eska breathed, her voice barely above a whisper. She moved closer, her rifle hanging loosely at her side. "That's… that's Lars. He was a farmer in my village. I knew him."
Wanda's crimson eyes flicked to the soldier Eska was pointing at. His face was gaunt, his skin pale and stretched tight over his bones. Whatever life had once filled his eyes was gone, replaced by the dull glow of Hydra's control.
"They're using civilians," Eska continued, her voice cracking. "Farmers. Workers. Our own people they've been turning them into this." Her hand trembled as she gestured to the rows of tethered soldiers. "We've been killing our own people this whole time."
Wanda stepped forward, placing a hand on Eska's shoulder. "Don't feel bad for them," she said softly, her tone firm. "Death was a swift end to the suffering they were forced to endure. Hydra took everything from them. What we're doing is mercy."
Eska closed her eyes for a moment, her jaw tightening as she steadied herself. When she opened them again, there was a new fire in her gaze. She swung her bag around, pulling out bundles of C4 explosives.
"We can't save them," she said, her voice steady but filled with determination. "But we can destroy this place. Along with the rest of Hydra."
Wanda gave a nod, her expression hardening. "Let's make sure they don't do this to anyone else."
Eska began planting the explosives along the base of the machinery, working quickly and efficiently. Wanda kept watch, her symbiote-enhanced senses on high alert as she scanned the room. The hum of the machinery and the faint whispers of conditioned commands from the soldiers' helmets filled the air, a haunting reminder of Hydra's cruelty.
Fracture's voice slithered into Wanda's mind, her tone colder than usual. **"Humans have a knack for turning each other into tools. Pathetic. But effective, I suppose."**
"They're not tools," Wanda whispered back. "They're victims."
"Victims who became weapons," Fracture hissed. "Remember that when you face the ones pulling the strings."
With the first round of explosives set, Wanda and Eska prepared to leave the atrium. The sight of Lars and the other civilians still lingered in Eska's mind, but she forced herself to focus on the mission.
"Ready?" Wanda asked, her voice cutting through the heavy silence.
Eska nodded, shouldering her rifle. "Let's keep moving."
As they approached the exit, the sound of mechanical footsteps echoed down the corridor ahead. Wanda and Eska froze, their eyes narrowing as a new squad of Hydra soldiers emerged. These were unlike the ones they had fought before—larger, bulkier, and clearly more machine than human. Their limbs were reinforced with metal plating, and their movements were jerky, as if they were being controlled remotely. Glowing panels embedded in their chests pulsed with the same green energy that powered the modulators.
"Great," Eska muttered, raising her rifle. "As if things weren't bad enough."
"They're not even people anymore," Wanda said, her crimson eyes narrowing. "Just empty shells."
One of the soldiers stepped forward, its head tilting unnaturally as if scanning them. It raised its arm, which transformed into a mounted gun, and opened fire. Wanda darted to the side, her symbiote claws extending as she deflected a spray of bullets with the Chitauri Scepter.
Eska fired back, aiming for the glowing panel on the soldier's chest. The shot hit its mark, and the soldier staggered before collapsing in a heap of metal and flesh.
"Go for the chest panels!" Eska shouted. "It's their weak spot!"
"Noted," Wanda replied, lunging at another soldier. She drove the scepter into its chest, the golden tip piercing the panel and releasing a burst of energy. The soldier convulsed before falling to the ground, its body twitching as the light in its panel dimmed.
The battle raged on, the corridor erupting with gunfire and explosions as Wanda and Eska fought side by side. Eska used her grenades to take out clusters of soldiers, while Wanda relied on her symbiote-enhanced strength to overpower them. The Chitauri Scepter became an extension of her body—a spear, a staff, and a shield all in one.
One of the soldiers charged at Wanda, its movements faster and more aggressive than the others. It raised a bladed arm, swiping at her with deadly precision. Wanda blocked the strike with the scepter, but the force of the blow pushed her back. She countered with a surge of chaos magic, but the soldier's armor absorbed the energy, leaving it unfazed.
"Eska!" Wanda called out, struggling to hold the soldier at bay. "A little help here!"
Eska turned, her rifle already trained on the soldier. She fired a precise shot at its chest panel, shattering the glowing device. The soldier crumpled, its mechanical limbs twitching as it fell.
"Thanks," Wanda said, brushing a strand of hair out of her face.
"Don't mention it," Eska replied, reloading her rifle. "Seriously. Don't."
As the last of the soldiers fell, the corridor fell silent once more. Wanda leaned against the wall, her chest rising and falling as she caught her breath. Eska inspected the wreckage, her expression grim.
"These things aren't just soldiers," Eska said, nudging one of the bodies with her boot. "They're experiments. Hydra's been testing their serum and their tech on people."
"Turning them into monsters," Wanda said softly, her gaze lingering on the twisted remains. "All in the name of power."
Eska looked at her, her voice quiet but firm. "We can't let them keep doing this. Not to anyone."
"We won't," Wanda replied, her grip on the scepter tightening. "When we're done here, there won't be anything left of this place."
Eska nodded, pulling another bundle of C4 from her bag. "Let's make sure of it."
As they progressed further, Wanda and Eska planted more explosives along the way, securing the path for the eventual destruction of the Citadel. The walls seemed to close in as they moved deeper into the bunker, the oppressive atmosphere growing heavier with each step.
At the base of a wide staircase, they paused, their eyes following the steps that spiraled upward into the unknown.
"This is it," Eska said, her voice steady despite the weight of the moment. "The first floor."
Wanda glanced at her, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Ready for round two?"
Eska smirked, her hand resting on her rifle. "Always."
With a shared nod, they began their ascent, their steps echoing through the bunker. The challenges ahead loomed like shadows, but their resolve burned brighter than ever. Together, they would face whatever Hydra had waiting for them.
And they would win.
