Chapter 14: Escape And Doubts
The alarms echoed through the Hydra bunker like a relentless drumbeat as Wanda Maximoff led the group of prisoners down the dimly lit hallway. Her grip on the Chitauri Scepter tightened with every step, the hum of chaos magic flickering faintly around her hands. Behind her, Eska Vryn walked at the rear of the group, her sharp gaze scanning every shadow for movement.
"They're coming," Wanda muttered, her voice low but tense.
Eska nodded, her pistol raised. "They won't let us leave without a fight."
The rescued prisoners shuffled nervously, their eyes wide with fear. Some limped, leaning on each other for support, while others cast worried glances toward the darkened corridors.
"We'll get you out of here," Wanda said firmly, her crimson eyes glowing faintly as she extended her telepathic senses. The faint edges of hostile thoughts brushed against her mind—a mix of discipline and aggression. "But we need to move faster."
Eska quickened her pace, her voice sharp. "No stopping. Stay close and keep quiet. They're closing in."
The first wave of Hydra soldiers struck as the group rounded a corner. A barricade had been hastily erected, and a squad of black-armored operatives stood ready with energy rifles. One barked an order, and blue-tinted blasts of energy erupted down the hallway.
"Get down!" Wanda shouted, thrusting her hand forward. Chaos magic surged from her palm, forming a shimmering crimson barrier that absorbed the blasts. The shield flickered under the impact, but it held.
Eska took position behind the barrier, her pistol snapping off precise shots. "They're blocking the hallway. We'll have to clear them."
Wanda nodded, her focus sharpening. With a sharp gesture, she sent the barrier hurtling forward, slamming into the barricade and scattering the soldiers behind it. The air filled with the sound of crashing debris and shouted orders as Wanda stepped forward, her scepter glowing with raw energy.
One soldier lunged at her with a baton crackling with electricity. Wanda sidestepped, driving the scepter's blade-like end into his chest. Chaos magic flared as he collapsed, unconscious.
Eska moved swiftly, her movements sharp and efficient as she disarmed another soldier and sent him sprawling with a well-placed kick. "That's one squad down," she said breathlessly. "But they'll send more."
Wanda glanced at the prisoners, who cowered behind the remnants of the barricade. "We keep moving. Stay close."
The group barely made it fifty feet before the sound of boots echoed behind them. Wanda turned sharply, her crimson eyes narrowing as another squad of Hydra soldiers appeared at the far end of the hallway. These operatives were faster, their movements more coordinated.
"They're flanking us!" Eska shouted, firing a burst of shots that forced the soldiers to scatter. "Keep the prisoners moving. I'll hold them off."
"No," Wanda said firmly. "We do this together."
She raised the scepter, its golden gem pulsing with light, and unleashed a wave of chaos magic that tore through the hallway. The soldiers were thrown back, but more pressed forward, firing their weapons with precision.
Wanda ducked behind a column, her magic swirling protectively around her. "These ones are trained. They're not going to fall like the others."
Eska gritted her teeth, taking down another soldier with a clean shot. "Then we'll have to work for it."
As the fight raged on, Wanda found herself relying on Fracture's guidance. The symbiote's voice was calm and steady in her mind.
***"Strike quickly and decisively, Wanda. Use their momentum against them."**
With a deep breath, Wanda surged forward, chaos magic coiling around her arms like serpents. She disarmed one soldier with a sharp twist of her wrist, sending his weapon clattering to the ground. Another lunged at her, but she drove the scepter into his abdomen, sending him crumpling to the floor.
Eska moved in tandem with her, their actions coordinated and efficient. Together, they dispatched the remaining soldiers, leaving the hallway littered with bodies.
As they approached the final stretch of the bunker, the third wave struck. These soldiers wore heavier armor, their weapons humming with higher frequencies. Wanda could feel the faint hum of energy disruptors designed to interfere with her magic.
"They're adapting," Wanda said grimly.
"Then we adapt faster," Eska replied.
Wanda's chaos magic flickered as the disruptors' fields brushed against her. She gritted her teeth, focusing on precision rather than brute force. With a sharp motion, she directed a concentrated burst of energy at one of the soldiers, targeting the joints of his armor. The soldier stumbled, his weapon falling from his grasp.
Eska took advantage of the opening, firing at the exposed weak points. "Keep at it! We've got this!"
Fracture's voice echoed in Wanda's mind. ***"Your magic is stronger than their machines. Focus on their flaws and strike."**
Wanda followed Fracture's advice, her attacks growing more precise. She targeted the disruptors directly, overloading them with concentrated bursts of chaos magic. The heavy operatives fell one by one, their advanced equipment proving no match for her growing skill.
Finally, the last soldier dropped, and the hallway fell silent.
The exit loomed ahead—a massive steel door reinforced with layers of locks. Wanda extended her magic, unraveling the mechanisms with practiced ease. The door groaned open, revealing the cold night air beyond.
"We made it," Eska said, her voice heavy with relief. She turned to the prisoners. "Go. Get as far from here as you can. The resistance will take care of you."
As the prisoners scrambled into the night, Wanda lingered at the threshold, her crimson eyes scanning the horizon. The bunker lay in ruins behind her, but she knew it wasn't enough. Hydra's operations stretched far beyond this facility.
"This is just the beginning," she murmured.
Fracture's voice was soft but insistent.*** "Hydra's strength lies in its roots. You've cut one, but the others remain. Prepare for the battles ahead, Wanda."**
Back at the resistance hideout, cheers erupted as the prisoners were ushered inside. Wanda and Eska moved through the crowd, exhaustion etched on their faces. Dmitri, the male resistance leader, stood near the center of the room. His expression was a mix of shock and confusion.
"You're alive," Dmitri said, his voice uneven. "I... I didn't think—"
Wanda's eyes narrowed, her telepathic senses brushing against his thoughts. There was something off about his reaction—a flicker of guilt, of doubt.
"Of course we're alive," Eska said sharply. "What, did you expect us to fail?"
Dmitri stammered, his hands raised defensively. "No, I just... that bunker was heavily fortified. I wasn't sure anyone could survive it."
Eska exchanged a glance with Wanda, suspicion flickering in her eyes. Wanda felt Fracture's presence stir in her mind.
***"He is hiding something, Wanda. Watch him closely."**
Wanda's expression hardened. "We'll talk later," she said curtly.
As the night wore on, the resistance leaders gathered to discuss their next steps. Wanda stood at the head of the room, her presence commanding. She outlined what they had discovered in the bunker—Hydra's experiments, their growing power, and the King's involvement.
"They're not just holding Sokovia," Wanda said. "They're using it as a testing ground. If we don't stop them here, they'll spread everywhere."
Eska nodded, her voice firm. "Then we take back the city. One section at a time. We weaken their grip and push them back to the castle."
The room buzzed with determination as plans began to take shape. Teams were assigned to different sectors of Novi Grad, each tasked with liberating key areas from Hydra's control.
Wanda stood apart, her thoughts racing. Fracture's voice was a steady whisper in her mind.
**"This is the beginning, Wanda. Every step you take brings you closer to your destiny. Chaos and order, destruction and creation—they are yours to command."**
Wanda exhaled, her crimson eyes glowing faintly. "One step at a time."
