Chapter 462: What They Seek
...
Void Abyss.
The White-clothed Swordsman's hand paused slightly as he was about to place a chess piece.
A peach blossom petal landed on the board.
The woman opposite him smiled like a blooming flower: "What? Has our Chess Saint finally encountered a move he can't decide on?"
The swordsman across from her still didn't place his piece, instead casually tossing it back into the box.
The woman's smile froze abruptly as she stared at the White-clothed Swordsman in shock.
Having known him for so long, this was the first time she'd ever seen joy flicker in his eyes.
After the shock came overwhelming jealousy.
She couldn't imagine what could possibly bring joy to this ice-cold swordsman.
Power? But he was already the strongest in the world.
Authority? In the Void Abyss he needed none, and outside it, who in the entire Cangyun Realm would dare not bow before him?
The chance to become immortal? But Nine-Tails knew the swordsman could ascend anytime he wished. Though both were at the Great Ascension Stage's third tribulation perfection, facing him made her feel like a child before a wolf, utterly incapable of resistance.
If none of these, then it must be a woman.
But she, Nine-Tails, was the most beautiful woman in the mortal realm. If even she couldn't catch his eye, who could?
Nine-Tails' thoughts were in turmoil, but the White-clothed Swordsman had already risen without sparing her another glance.
"The causal threads between the two worlds have finally become clear," the swordsman murmured to himself while gazing at the peach forest, then frowned. "But the power driving their convergence still isn't enough..." He paced before the trees, his expression gradually twisting with anger and madness.
Nine-Tails watched silently from nearby.
Watched as his rampaging sword qi tore through the peach forest like a tornado, leaving behind only a ravaged wasteland.
She couldn't make out his words, drowned as they were by the shrieking of swords.
But she desperately wanted to know what occupied his thoughts.
"Those damned insects, wasting so many resources! What's the point of their existence? There still aren't enough dead!"
Gritting his teeth, the swordsman suddenly stopped pacing, his sharp eyes burning with vicious flames.
"Perhaps... sacrifice one first to fill the gap, let the other continue producing?"
Having seemingly found his solution, the anger faded from his face and the wild sword qi gradually calmed.
Only then did the shredded petals rain down like snow.
Nine-Tails moved to approach and inquire.
But a silver-white Sword Curtain descended from the sky, carving a ten-zhang-wide fissure stretching beyond sight into the earth.
She froze in place.
"We'll play another day. I'm busy—don't disturb me."
With that, the White-clothed Swordsman took a single step forward and vanished.
Nine-Tails stared blankly at where he'd disappeared, growing increasingly furious the more she thought about it.
Her beautiful face paled, then flushed red, then turned green with rage, her entire body trembling.
"I'll find out what in the Cangyun Realm has caught your attention!"
Gnashing her teeth, nine phantom tails materialized behind her as demonic energy surged skyward.
Though she'd sworn never to meddle in the Cangyun Realm's affairs again, now she'd have to mobilize the forces she'd left among the demon races.
The Nine-Tailed Fox was never kind.
She'd once slaughtered entire human nations just to consume ten million hearts and grow stronger.
Now, to uncover the swordsman's secret, she'd happily slaughter her way through the Cangyun Realm, leaving no sect standing!
...
...
Morning light filtered through the window, casting warmth across the bed.
Li Qingran felt the gentle warmth on her cheek and slowly opened her eyes.
For a moment she was disoriented, unsure of where she was.
As her vision cleared, she remembered—she'd spent the night in her master's cave abode.
The realization jolted her fully awake, her heartbeat quickening involuntarily.
Turning her head, she saw her master already awake, watching her with a smile as he lay on his side.
"Master... g-good morning," Li Qingran murmured, her voice soft with sleep and a hint of shyness. She instinctively pulled the blanket higher, covering up to her chin, leaving only her bright eyes exposed like a wary kitten.
"Morning." Chen Huaian smiled back, gently brushing aside a strand of hair from her forehead. "Did you sleep well?"
Li Qingran nodded, then shook her head, finally biting her lower lip: "I... I'm not used to it."
"Oh?" Chen Huaian raised an eyebrow. "Not used to what?"
"Not used to... having someone beside me," Li Qingran whispered. "This disciple has cultivated alone since childhood, never been so... close with anyone."
Chen Huaian chuckled: "Then why did you insist on coming last night?"
Li Qingran pouted: "Master knows perfectly well why!"
She tried to sit up but found a lock of her hair caught on something.
Somehow it had become tangled around Chen Huaian's finger.
"Ah, it's stuck," she flusteredly tried to free it.
Chen Huaian made no move to help, instead giving the strand a playful tug: "Seems your hair doesn't want to leave me either."
"Master!" Li Qingran's cheeks flushed pink as she mumbled, "Stop teasing..."
In her struggle, her hand accidentally brushed Chen Huaian's chest—and passed right through.
Li Qingran froze.
Though they'd shared a bed last night, they'd only embraced—she couldn't even properly feel her master's warmth.
"What's wrong?" Chen Huaian noticed her expression change.
Li Qingran shook her head, though her smile faltered slightly: "Nothing. Just... a little regretful."
It was all because of those troublemakers on Earth Star, preventing her master from focusing fully on the Cangyun Realm.
Understanding, Chen Huaian cupped her face gently: "But I can feel you, and that's enough."
Li Qingran's eyes reddened slightly, then she suddenly smiled mischievously: "Then what does Master feel?"
"Let me see..." Chen Huaian pinched her cheek playfully, pretending to ponder. "My disciple's face is softer than I imagined."
"And?"
"And my disciple kicks the blanket three times a night."
"I do not!" Li Qingran pushed his hand away in embarrassment, then couldn't help asking, "Really?"
Chen Huaian laughed: "Just teasing. You slept quietly, like a kitten."
Only then did Li Qingran relax, then suddenly remembered something, her face burning red: "D-did I talk in my sleep?"
A mischievous glint flashed in Chen Huaian's eyes: "You did."
"W-what did I say?" Li Qingran asked nervously.
"You said..." Chen Huaian drew out the pause, "'Master is so handsome, I want to give Master ten—no, a hundred—babies!'"
"I would never say such things!"
Mortified, Li Qingran headbutted toward Chen Huaian's chest—only to plunge face-first into the pillow.
Chen Huaian roared with laughter.
Seeing her "attack" fail, Li Qingran glared at him like an aggrieved little pufferfish.
Chen Huaian's heart melted at her expression, gently tapping her nose:
"Alright, no more teasing. You didn't talk in your sleep—you were very peaceful."
Relieved yet somehow disappointed, Li Qingran asked, "Then did Master not sleep at all?"
"Through long cultivation, I've grown accustomed to light sleep—when I do sleep, it's brief."
Chen Huaian said gently, "Besides, watching you sleep was far more interesting."
Was Master saying she looked cute while sleeping?
Li Qingran's heart swelled with sweetness as she tucked her hair behind her ear and whispered:
"Then... when Master has time, let's sleep together again..."
"Naturally." Chen Huaian smiled and nodded.
Li Qingran studied Chen Huaian for a moment, then suddenly leaned in to plant a quick kiss on his fingertip.
She immediately leapt from the bed, fleeing toward the door: "This disciple will prepare morning tea!"
Chen Huaian remained still, staring at his kissed finger, his lips curling unconsciously.
Though they couldn't fully possess each other yet, mornings like this were beautiful enough.
He hadn't slept all night.
Besides being unable to take his eyes off Li Qingran's adorable sleeping face, he'd been busy.
Organizing memories from both worlds, comparing what he'd seen and heard.
He thought he'd finally figured out what that fortune-telling girl—who resembled Real Person Jade Compassion—really was.
Jade Compassion had failed her heavenly tribulation. Even reduced to a loose immortal, her realm must still surpass the Great Ascension Stage's three tribulations.
Cultivators at such peaks, finding normal ascension impossible, would inevitably seek alternative paths.
Severing the Three Corpses was one well-known method.
The murals in the Demon Sealing Pagoda depicted Great Ascension cultivators severing their three corpses to knock on immortality's gate.
One record stood out:
—The Middle Corpse Spirit Peng Zhi obsesses over wealth, yet can break destiny's constraints.
Obsessed with wealth, skilled in divination.
Looking identical to Jade Compassion yet with different aura.
Wasn't that fortune-telling girl Jade Compassion's Middle Corpse?
"Who knows if this Jade Compassion is friend or foe..."
Chen Huaian clenched his fist, his expression darkening.
He was Li Qingran's Dao Companion now. Before she crossed worlds to find him...
He ought to eliminate all threats to her safety!
