Chapter 41: The Rule?
Jin Xu moved forward and waved his hands in front of the two women, but they had no reaction, still engrossed in searching for their Young Master/Temple Master.
"Little Yu, Little White."
The pleasing voice of the young Taoist filled the room, seemingly breaking some unseen rule.
The two women suddenly woke up!
"Young Master!"
"Temple Master!"
Both exclaimed in unison, then suddenly recalled what they had just been doing.
"Young Master, is this the effect of the Concealing Skill you cultivated?"
Yu Yaoer curiously asked the Jin Xu before her.
Recalling her recent actions with Little White, a chill inexplicably ran down her spine. But upon remembering that the person who had cultivated this skill was the young Taoist, the chill dissipated.
"I guess so, did you two suddenly become unable to see me?"
Jin Xu stared at them and gently asked.
He still hadn't deactivated the Concealing Skill, wanting to see what strange manifestations it had developed.
"Just now, it seemed like I instantly lost the memories of entering the room, then I gradually felt like I was forgetting your existence, Young Master.
It wasn't until you called my name that I realized you were still in the room. The memories that had disappeared came back then."
Yu Yaoer blinked her watery eyes intensely, staring at the young Taoist as if afraid he would disappear again.
Little White, on the side, nodded in agreement, indicating that Little Yu's feelings were exactly like her own.
"To instantly forget my existence, and gradually lose the memories of me. But as soon as I speak, this state is broken; I wonder how wide the range of this effect is, and how come this 'Concealing Skill' can alter people's cognition as well?"
The young Taoist was deeply pondering.
From the door came the voice of Jiang Xiulan.
"Taoist, Little White, old Jiang's Spirit Rice dishes are ready, come and taste them."
Saying this, Chef Jiang walked in with a tray bearing dishes such as chilled rice tofu, rice noodle rolls, rice cakes, and braised pork made from rice.
Spirit Rice dishes were not the name of a single dish but hundreds of dishes made using Spirit Rice as the ingredient, so the plates and bowls on Jiang Xiulan's tray were indeed numerous.
Upon hearing Jiang Xiulan's voice, the two women turned to look.
But the moment their line of sight shifted away from Jin Xu, their memories reverted to the moment the young Taoist had called them for help.
After Chef Jiang entered the room with the tray, he too was stunned.
"Wasn't I cooking in the kitchen? How did I end up in the Taoist's room?"
He looked down at the tray in his hands.
"Hmm!? When did the Spirit Rice dishes get ready?"
Jiang Xiulan, truly a Cultivator in the Divinity Transformation Realm, immediately realized there was something wrong with his memory!
But that was about as far as he could go...
"Brother Jiang, weren't you cooking in the kitchen? How did the Spirit Rice dishes get ready so quickly?"
Little White curiously responded, her eyes on the tray held by Jiang Xiulan.
"Yeah, oh, right."
Chef Jiang felt a slight warmth on his forehead, then the memory of the Spirit Rice dishes not being ready was altered.
"Weren't you here to help the young Taoist? Where is he now?"
He looked around the empty room, uncertainly asking the two women.
Next, Jin Xu witnessed another scene.
People were looking for him right in front of his eyes.
The only difference was, instead of just two people searching for him as before, now three were searching.
"Shout it out, and the person will come to their senses, but the moment their gaze leaves me, they'll forget me again, and their memory resets. However, this magic seems to have a range limit; before Brother Jiang entered the room just now, he was acting perfectly normal,"
Jin Xu pondered this in his mind and then ceased the operation of the "Concealing Skill" he had been using continuously.
"Young master!"
"Temple master!"
"Little Taoist!"
Three exclamations arose in the room, and the two women's memories were restored; Jiang Xiulan also remembered why she was there.
"Little Taoist, what are you doing?"
Chef Jiang knew why he was there, but he still couldn't understand what had just happened.
"I'm sorry, Brother Jiang. I obtained a Concealing Skill from a wind catcher at Tingfeng Building yesterday and was testing the results of my cultivation. I inadvertently affected you,"
Jin Xu somewhat apologetically explained to Chef Jiang.
"A Concealing Skill could have this kind of effect?"
Jiang Xiulan asked with doubt, setting the tray she was holding on the table.
It was one thing not to see people right in front of her, but now that Chef Jiang had come to his senses, it was clear that even his memory and cognition had been impacted!
After all, he was a cultivator in the Divinity Transformation Realm. What kind of Concealing Skill could possibly have such an effect!?
"Little Taoist, are you sure you obtained this Concealing Skill from someone at Tingfeng Building?"
As Jiang Xiulan asked this, she picked up a small dish of chilled rice tofu and handed it to Little White, who looked at it eagerly.
"Indeed, I obtained it from them, but the effects of this Concealing Skill indeed exceeded my expectations,"
Jin Xu hadn't fully understood the skill yet and then recounted all the effects he had summarized earlier to Chef Jiang.
The other party, after all, was a seasoned Divinity Transformation cultivator and had been walking the paths of the Nine Provinces Immortal World for many years; perhaps he had encountered such a strange Concealing Skill and could offer some advice.
"Little Taoist, I've indeed never encountered such an odd Concealing Skill," Chef Jiang picked up a rice noodle roll, slurping it into his mouth before continuing, "However, something that can change a person's memory, senses, and cognition, I have indeed read snippets of it in an ancient book."
"Please enlighten me, Brother Jiang,"
Jin Xu chewed carefully on the braised pork belly made with Spirit Rice in his mouth and bowed slightly to Jiang Xiulan.
"Years ago, while searching for ancient culinary recipes, I bought a large number of ancient books.
They mentioned chefs from the Immortal Realm who could use rules to make dishes that offer the ultimate pleasure. It is said that after eating such dishes, a diner's personality and cognition could be temporarily altered.
The description in the books somewhat resembles the effects of your skill."
"Rules?"
The little Taoist swallowed the braised pork made with Spirit Rice and murmured to himself.
"Yes, legend has it that only immortals who have ascended can cultivate such mysterious powers, and I also don't deeply understand how,"
Seeing the puzzled look on Jin Xu's face, Chef Jiang added another explanation.
Upon hearing this, the little Taoist turned his gaze towards Yu Yaoer.
The Little Fish Demon was battling with a piece of Ci Fan cake; seeing the young master looking her way, she puffed her cheeks and shook her head, indicating that she hadn't heard of such a thing.
Jin Xu, seeing this, then turned his gaze towards Little White.
"emmmm..."
The little Taoist watched the voracious husky ignore him and silently withdrew his gaze.
"To think that my own practice of the 'Concealing Skill' might have stumbled upon a power akin to rules. But what use is it? Although it can conceal my form, the side effect is too great. It's fine when I'm acting alone, but if I bring others along, they'll lose their memory every time it's used."
Jin Xu scratched his head, puzzled, then reached for some chilled rice tofu with his chopsticks.
Since he had learned it, he couldn't just forget it, could he? Besides, one can never have too many skills.
However, that wasn't what he was concerned about at the moment.
Tomorrow his master's old friend was coming to visit Chef Jiang.
Jin Xu decided that he should first ask Chef Jiang for some information about his master's old friend.
