Chapter 38: The Gathering Storm
The Iron Spires disappeared in the distance as the members of Team Eclipse entered a war-torn plain of dust that stretched before them. This land was more like a battlefield, dappled with rusting weapons, shattered armor pieces, and eerie reminders of old conflicts. Above this, the fractured sky periodically crackled with streaks of dark energy, reminding Team Eclipse constantly of the approach of the Abyss.
The silence that came afterwards was unsettling. Draven was the one to break it, as he always did; his tone was light but his words heavy.
"So, what's the over-under on the next one being twice as big and twice as angry?" he asked, looking at the glowing Abyssal Core Fragment in Ryu's hand.
Aris smiled faintly, but her expression hardened quickly as she glanced at the map. "We're going into the Gray Expanse next. That's where the fifth and final signature is. If the Abyss follows its usual pattern, the fight will be worse than anything we've faced."
Ryu nodded, his gaze unwavering. "Then we prepare.
As they pushed on, the distant sound of voices cut through the oppressive stillness. The faint glow of campfires came into view, and Ryu motioned for the others to slow their pace.
"A guild?" Aris whispered, her bow drawn just in case.
They approached cautiously but sensed some of the tension in the air recede as they caught a view of a group of players massed around an informal base. Their banners proudly showcased the sigil of one of the most dominant raiding guilds of all time in the popular realm of Eternal Nexus Online: Iron Vanguard.
There is a burly man noticed them, stepping out ahead. He was surrounded by others. His name tag says: Ryker – Leader Iron Vanguard.
"Team Eclipse, right?" Ryker said, his tone respectful but curt. "We've heard of you. I'm surprised to see a small team making it this far."
"We could say the same," Draven replied, folding his arms. "What's Iron Vanguard doing here?"
Ryker gestured toward the horizon, where the ominous silhouette of a massive fortress loomed. The structure pulsed with Abyssal energy, its spires piercing the heavens.
That's the Gray Expanse Fortress," Ryker explained. "The Abyssal entity guarding the final signature is there, and we are planning a raid to clean it out. If you have your wits about you, you'll join us. A fight like this isn't something you want to handle alone.
Ryu looked at Aris and then at Draven. A raid meant more firepower, but also risks—too many players would draw the Abyss's attention, and the casualty rate in raids was notorious.
"We'll join," Ryu said finally, his voice firm. "But we fight on our terms."
Ryker looked at him, then nodded. "Fair enough. Gear up. We move at dawn."
By the time the raid actually started, nearly fifty players had gathered outside the fortress. The guilds present in the raid included Iron Vanguard, Steel Covenant, among others. Team Eclipse hung back on the sidelines to watch the play of the game.
Inside the fortress, the presence of the Abyss was palpable. The air felt thick with malice, and the walls hummed with dark energy. As the raid party advanced, waves of Abyssal creatures swarmed them-grotesque amalgamations of flesh and metal that attacked with ferocity.
The guilds fought with practiced coordination, but the Abyss was relentless. Players fell in quick succession, their health bars plummeting under the assault of the seemingly endless hordes.
Team Eclipse moved with precision, taking down smaller groups of enemies while conserving their strength. Aris's arrows struck true, Ryu's Voidfang carved through the chaos, and Draven held the line with unyielding determination.
After hours of gruesome fighting, the raid party entered the central chamber. The massive gates creaked open to reveal the last challenge standing:
[Boss Encounter: Abyssal Overlord – Zarathun]
Level: 90
The Abyssal Overlord was a towering monstrosity with multiple arms, all clad in constantly shifting obsidian-like armor. The party could feel the terror emanating from its mere presence, and its guttural roar shook the chamber.
"We aren't prepared for this," someone said, but Ryker shushed them with an intense stare.
"We do not back down," Ryker declared. "Everyone, composure! Hit it hard and hit it fast!"
Overlord unleashed its wrath upon starting the battle. With every swing of its huge blades in the form of cleavers, several players stood to be eliminated. They were fighting with all their strength, but the power Zarathun wielded had simply overwhelmed them.
One by one, the players started to drop. The Overlord's attacks, inflicting Abyssal energy on the chamber, annihilated entire guilds. Draven barely covered Aris from a blast; his health bar threatened to dip perilously low.
"We are losing too many!" Aris yelled as he shot an explosive arrow at one of the weak points in the Overlord, and the attack staggered it but barely slowed its onslaught.
Ryu cast Voidfang's shadow strike, teleporting behind the Overlord. He shot for its exposed core, but the Overlord swatted him aside with one of its massive arms, sending him crashing into a nearby wall.
"Ryu!" Aris cried out, panic in her voice.
Ryu coughed, forcing himself to his feet. His health bar blinked red, but his grip on Voidfang tightened. "We can't let it win."
The Turning Point
As the Overlord set ready a final, doomsday assault, Ryu approached, his eyes burning hot with determination. He entered his ultimate skill, the Voidfang's Eclipsing Strike, charging the Overlord face forward.
"Focus on the core!" he yelled. "Now!"
Aris and Draven rallied up at once, their attacks coordinated to suit Ryu's. A handful of surviving players joined on, targeting the weak parts of the Overlord.
Ryu's sword plunged into the Overlord's core with a blinding flash of light. For an instant, time seemed to stand still. Then, with a deafening roar, Zarathun collapsed, its massive body disintegrating into the Abyss.
[Boss Defeated: Abyssal Overlord – Zarathun]
Experience Earned: 50,000
Loot Obtained: Abyssal Core Fragment
They sat quietly, their losses heavy in the air. Of the fifty to enter the fortress, it was now less than ten.
Ryker comes up to Team Eclipse and looks grave but respectful, "You saved us in there. We would've never made it if we hadn't had you around.
Ryu didn't say a word. There was the final Abyssal Core Fragment clutched in his hand, lit up with ominous glow.
The notifications read the outcome of what they already guessed:
[Quest Update: All Abyssal Energy Signatures Neutralized.]
"This isn't the end." Ryu finally said as he continues to stare towards the afar Sky Citadel. "The Abyss isn't through with us yet.
Without another word, Team Eclipse turned and walked away, leaving the shattered remnants of the raid behind. The real battle was still ahead.
