CH177-Battle barge IV
The sound of air hissing struck the air as the loud thud of steel echoed in the air, a faint rumbling felt on the ground.
"What did you do?" Samael asked as he looked at the man in his hand.
The Omen laughed violently in response, prompting Samael to crush his head in his hand with a loud pop.
Wiping the blood off his face, Samael intently watched the massive metal doors in front open, releasing steam that formed a smokescreen.
One by one, red lights ignited in the smoke along with the united sound of clashing metal on the cold stone floor.
"What's that, boss?" Hammel asked as he braced himself. The rest also watched with cold sweat as they revealed themselves.
Humanoid-like creatures made of metal. They stood towering at around 7 feet tall with metal platings draped over their vessels.
Looking at Samael's group, the machines hummed as their hands began to open, revealing weapons as they uttered one mechanical line.
"Exterminate."
Samael's jaw clenched as his arms and feet morphed black. "Kill them all!"
Charging forth, Samael and the rest raced towards the machines. But the objects themselves did the same, meeting them with intense speed for something their size and weight.
On their left hand was a blade that ignited blue, vibrating rapidly, while the other hand revealed different weapons.
The first machine raised its right hand, revealing a weapon with multiple barrels that rapidly rotated before raining down lead.
Samael hastily deployed a Void shield as the bullets struck his element, causing him to slide back a little. Hammel went past Samael, taking the opportunity to close the distance as his hand glowed orange. But before he could attack, another one of the three devices intercepted him with a flying bullet that seemed to pivot midair.
"What the fuck?!" Hammel roared as he dashed back, the cylindrical weapon following him.
Assisting him, Caephas threw a plethora of crystal shards. The moment the two collided, an earth-shaking explosion erupted as Hammel was thrown back a few feet, sliding off the ground with his forearms burnt.
Caephas's jaw fell agape upon witnessing this. "Definitely don't hit those objects!"
Sensing his shield charged up, Samael slammed it down as a void shockwave struck forward, pushing back the creature for only a few steps as clamps ejected off its feet, steadying it.
As it did, its traps opened as multiple small projectiles fired in the air, creating a whistling sound.
Samael dashed forth as he nimbly avoided the projectiles, but much like their larger counterparts, it took a turn in the air as it redirects towards him.
Knowing what they could do, Samael kept going towards the machine, keeping the missiles behind as the construct charged ahead as well, waving its vibrating blade towards Samael with deadly precision.
But Samael was faster than any of this metal junk.
Samael's figure turned to a blur as he sharply dodged the blade, the projectiles behind him hitting the machine in the body as multiple loud clunks echoed.
The projectiles turned red as multiple small explosions echoed, causing the machine to blow into multiple small pieces.
Judging Samael's threat, the other two focused fire on him as one began to fire the same machine gun as earlier while the other machine ejected another one of the bigger projectiles.
Looking at Geralt, Samael nodded at the man as he created an ice arc to the right wall of the fortress. Speeding up, Samael coated his feet with Void matter as he slid as though he was gliding over water, narrowly avoiding the missile as he delivered a swift blow at the neck of the machine.
But to his surprise, it did not die but rather simply lost its vision.
Ensuring it's dead, Hammel billowed forward as he slammed his hand on its chest, causing a massive explosion that ripped it to shreds.
From the smoke of this explosion, Samael charged forward, closing the distance against the enemy.
Trying to maintain its range, the machine attempted to step back only to notice the ice glueing its feet on the floor.
Samael grabbed the creature at each side, ripping it in half with brute force as its insides were exposed.
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
There stood a red circular sphere.
A dunamis?
No, boss! That's its core, and it's detonating!
Samael's eyes widened as he turned into a flock of ravens, flying away as the machine blew to pieces, sending shrapnel that killed some of his birds.
Reforming and taking shape again, Samael looked at the devastation the machines caused. He could only wonder how much worse it would've been if it weren't them who saw these things here.
"What even are these things?" Caephas asked as he began to nudge one of the fallen.
"Hey! Don't touch that; what if it lunges at you?!" Hammel dragged the man back as he looked at Samael. "What now, Cap?"
In fact, Samael felt a hint of resemblance to these machines. The Mellagun's ruined kingdom had such objects, but they were never these sophisticated.
Not to mention, they were made with the combination of pure craftsmanship and elemental manipulation. There was also the assistance of remnants to keep them running without issues.
But these, these were pure machines.
Grabbing their innards, it was nothing but steel and wires. Not an ounce of element. Just pure, synthetic metal.
Now Samael was sure the church did not build this. As Elyria said, these things don't exist in Ergo yet. But if it doesn't, then where? These weren't remnants for the world to berate upon.
Samael crushed the metal on his hand as he stood up, dusting himself. "Open the door, Arthur."
"You got it, boss." Arthur meddled with the control panels as the door before Samael began to tremble, opening slowly and revealing the room within.
It was, unlike the rest of the fortress, made of metal. It was sturdy and filled with fixed wires lined over the wall. There were massive metal boxes on the walls with doors on them.
Approaching them, Samael opened one as he stepped back. "What the fuck..."
Hammel took a peek as he stepped back as well. "What the fuck?!"
Flies began to escape from the box as Samael watched a dead body inside hang on the wall with wires extending inside its body, ripping through its flesh and circulating around.
It was horrid and inhuman.
"Batteries", Samael repeated what the Omen told them. "The humans in the dungeon were used as batteries."
Hammel held his mouth as he looked at the spectacle with utter disgust. "Fuck..."
Samael closed off the lid as he ensured it was locked. "The computers are being powered by these men; as much as I'd like to give them a proper burial, we need their strength a little more."
Hammel just nodded as he stepped back, leaving the scene behind. He had seen the fates of humans against beasts, but to think fellow humans would do what abominations do sickens him.
Samael simply stood in front of the deceased, a sense of guilt and shame welling in his heart. But he had to do this. This was the only way to make their death mean something.
"Cap! Check this out," Geralt screamed.
Samael shot the lockers one more time as he approached the wall Geralt and Caephas were examining.
It was filled with dozens of circle-like apparatuses that seemed to possess needles inside, like compasses. Except it seemed to count something.
"Maybe it shows energy output?" Caephas asked. "Look, it shows different sectors of the fortress like in the computers." Caephas's brows furrowed as his hand touched a steel fortified meter. "What's this, though?"
Samael's gaze landed on the meter to notice something off. Its power usage was triple that of the computer area, which only amounted to second place.
"What are they doing?" Samael muttered to himself. They all saw it; the enemy were planning something. The more he understands, the more he feels unsure.
"We proceed," Samael said as he moved forward towards their next destination.
The sanitation stations were not too far. It did not take them much effort, for it wasn't as fortified as the electrical rooms.
Without issues, they took down the cannons and Omens, ripping them like weeds amongst the grass. Each by each, step by step.
Eventually, all that was left was the final act.
The Throne Room.
Gathering with the members, Samael looked at everyone as he glanced at the cameras around the place. It had been completely ripped out. The enemy knew they were watching.
"The throne room is heavily defended," Samael said. "I've seen it; I've scouted around the place, but it is foolproof." Pointing at the blueprint, Samael drew lines and labelled them. "There are towers here with heavy artillery cannons. Traps litter the place, mines, tripwires and kill zones. It is packed." A sigh escaped Samael's lips.
"What're you telling us, Cap?" Arthur asked.
"I'm telling you guys we will have no choice but to fight our way onwards," Samael's jaw clenched. "The only way in is through the main door, and the enemy knows this. They will be prepared..."
Hammel and the others fell silent. They knew they were fools for being too hopeful of their situation. The fact none of them had died yet was already proof that this mission had yet to face any stagnation. Yet, their real hurdle had presented itself.
Now, there was truly uncertainty if everyone inside this room would make it out alive. Samael himself knew this best.
They were told a transcendent human was present inside, waiting. Who knew how many Saints were inside? How many weapons and what object were they preparing?
But duty calls, and they must answer.
Steeling their resolve, they knew there was no escape. There was only what was ahead.
So as they strode through those stone halls, each step growing closer to their final battle, they held nothing but courage and hope for a better tomorrow.
Walking through the corridors and empty halls, Samael braced himself. The final battle was upon them.
Sneaking their way forward, Samael ensured they navigated through the traps without issues as he gestured for everyone to stop. Pointing ahead, they nodded.
The moment the Omens passed, they swiftly took them down, ensuring no noise was to be made as they proceeded deeper.
Exterminating and crushing the kill zones, they soon arrived at the gunners' post where five artillery cannons stood ready, waiting.
Seeing this, Samael nodded at the others as he gathered void matter in his hand, forming a ball. Taking a deep breath, he smashed it unto the ground as violent black smoke engulfed the entire area, blinding the omens as the only thing they saw were occasional flashes of purple before the sound of soft flesh crashing against the ground echoed.
Samael sprinted across as his axe wove left and right, taking down the Omens manning the machine. Some opened fire, but for naught, as their visions were blinded.
Without issues, Hammel and the others disposed of the machines they'd fought before. Ripping them with their newly developed tactics.
Once they were gone, they all stood before the towering door of the throne room.
Everything had been easy thus far, but Samael could feel it in his guts.
What was ahead was chaos. But he did not fear.
Duty calls.
