CH173-Battle barge I

Samael stood atop a shattered piece of column, observing the lights in the far distance where a single fortress stood amongst the rubbles of old cities.

Around him were a few dark figures watching the surrounding area as he did, creating plans and potential tactics of approach.

It had been a few days since their mission began, to understand better, it started as Samael finally received the mission file from Icarius.

The file contained 5 members aside from Samael being the squad captain. Each and every member were handpicked from the elites of the watchers. All of which had one thing in common.

Stealth.

The members he had were as followed. Hammel as his vice captain, a man of the Transcendent rank and 4 other saints. Limbo, Geralt, Caephas and Arthur.

Judging by their rank, specialties and overall abilities, Samael had already understood the kind of mission this would be.

Covert.

His suspicions were only confirmed further as he read the mission details.

They were to observe, create a battle plan and infiltrate a enemy base on the dead fields near Kakia mountain ranges. The current stronghold the enemy was occupying was once a fortress back in the olden days. Its capture would be a great victory for their side as it was positioned near the roads.

There were several other locations such as this. Some of which Nova and the rest handled while the more dangerous ones were done by Ishkar.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the mission, they didn't have any prior details to the structure or build of the place.

When Samael finally met his squad members they swiftly departed to their target location. Stealthily lurking on the deadlands around the castle.

In those last few days of their observations, they've made a map of the area and it's geological features. They've also taken note of a few things.

First, the place seemed to be teeming with enemies. Most of which seemed to be around Ascended and Enlightened. So far, there had been a few sightings of Saints and most of which seemed to be leaders who held some form of authority. They marked them as "Keys".

Currently, they've sighted 3 keys who would check on the men at fixed intervals. Every 2 hours they would come into view on the castle walls albeit briefly and with the soldiers gathering to form a safety line.

Nearly all the soldiers were omens. Even by Watcher standards their ranks were fairly high. They were also equipped with some gear and weapons but it seemed to be standard issue. It seems the ministry had enough time to prepare for this war.

The second thing they took note of were the defences of the fortress. Aside from the standard ballistas and catapults it seemed the walls were already old and somewhat weak. Samael noticed cracks on its surface that the soldiers inside were patching up every day.

There were also patrols of soldiers by squads of 4 people wandering around just outside the gates, taking a specific route that left nearly no gaps in their defense.

There were also alarm sirens on standby, a mote and steel fortified gates. Barging in head front was suicide.

Returning back to the darkness of the wild, Samael gathered with his men once more.

"What are your findings?" Samael asked.

"Currently the same as yesterday," Hammel said as he sat down with a sigh. "Their defenses are strong, they made up for the weakness of the fortress itself by ensuring nothing gets close."

"Not entirely," Caephas butted in. "I've read in history books that most fortresse such as these belonged to royal bloodlines."

"What does that have to do with anything?" Arthur asked.

"Well, most of these royal bloodlines had one thing in common," Cephas raised his finger. "They value their family heritage amongst all. There is a high chance there are crypts beneath that place."

"Do we know where it is?" Samael asked.

"Not yet, we'll have to dig around to try and find where it could be," Caephas shrugged.

"Do that," Samael nodded. "How about the rest?" he looked at everyone one by one.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

"None here," Arthur shook his head.

"Same here," Limbo added and so did Geralt.

"How about you captain? You've been observing the fortress near the hill recently. Have you thought of something?" Hammel asked as the other members shifted their gaze to Samael.

Samael fell silent for a moment. "I've been observing their rotations. Each time a key person shows up it is mandatory for the soldiers to form a defensive line to ensure the safety of the leader, we all know that. However, it is also the single moment their defenses are at its weakest." Samael pointed out.

"What do you mean weakest captain?" Caephas asked. "Wouldn't it be at its strongest since they're all gathered in a defensive line?"

"Technically, you are correct," Samael nodded. "But it is a big opportunity for an attack as it is the only moment they are not focused outside. The entire sector comes to report to the key figures, leaving a gap in their defense."

Arthur's brows furrowed. "Isn't that for like a short moment only? What can we even achieve in such a short span of time?"

"That's the thing. If we could launch a sudden attack, the enemy would be caught at their most vulnerable," Samael said. "Their defenses are built for assassin's, that's why they formed such measures. Their walls are unable to handle a siege attack but who would do that? Especially when you're this close to the mountains where there are waves upon waves of abominations?"

Everyone's eyes wandered off as they held their chin.

"But how would we do a siege attack?" Hammel asked. "We don't have the machines necessary and hauling them in here would make too much noise."

Samael shifted his gaze towards the direction of the fortress.

"We make our own."

***

Over the course of a few days, Samael steadily trained his element as he rose higher and higher on his mastery of not only his domain but his Void Plague as well. He was about 30% now with his complete mastery.

Meanwhile, their plan had finally come unto motion.

"The 3rd sector on the right seems to be weak captain. I think it'll be best to attack from there. There are cracks and maintenance often comes there to patch it up," Hammel recommended as he circled a part on their map.

"But the back of the stronghold is the less defended," Geralt pointed out. "Must be because it's close to the mountains foot."

Samael contemplated in silence for a moment as he tapped his finger on the table, garnering the attention of the other 3. Caephas and Limbo were currently out, scouring the deadlands for where this tomb could be.

"I think it'll be better to strike the front gate," Samael said as everyone's faces fell agape.

"What? That's... pardon my wording captain, stupid," Hammel said. "Not only is the front gate the most heavily defended part but it is also where most of the enemies are."

"I know," Samael said. "It is why we must strike it." Taking the pen, he drew a line on the front gate of the fortress and on the hill linear from it. "I propose we build a massive barge, fly it from here and ram it into the front gate."

"How?" Arthur asked.

"Through Caephas and vice captain Hammel's element," Samael replied. "Caephas has the element of crystal and you mr Hammel posses the element of explosion. I think you understand where I'm going here."

"I see..." Hammel nodded slowly as his eyes widened in realization.

Samael nodded in return when he began to sense two presence rapidly approaching their area. "They're back."

Entering the hidden camp, Caephas and Limbo showed up dirty and haggard. "We found it. The damned thing was closer than we anticipated."

"Good. But the job isn't over yet. We still need to scour those tombs and ensure the enemy hasn't gone there. Not to mention, plot our way through those corridors," Samael said as he showed them the map which they marked.

With everything set in place, Samael set off along with Hammel, Geralt and Caephas as they explained the insane plan to the man, causing quite the reaction. However, he too saw the logic behind it.

Who would expect your enemy to barge in your gate like that?

Without delay, they bagn to construct the contraption they'll need. They made sure to design the barge in a way that it had a more pointy tip for a smaller surface area. It also had plenty space within for them to reside in waiting for an ambush.

Due to the size of the object they'll need, the construction process was slow as Caephas can only go so much with his ethos.

During such times, Samael would continue to gather more information and at the same time explore the tombs with Limbo.

The tombs were indeed ancient. He was looking at designs that he had seen for the first time. To him, it almost looked alien.

The tunnels were beautiful, laced with precious gems and metals. Not only that, it bore the drawings of what appeared to be the depictions of their time.

There were countless tomb rooms, each with kings, queens, princes and princess within them. They were intricately designed and laid off, each bearing the name of their bloodline.

Their last name were Deuz and it seemed they had quite the rich history. But no one remembers their legacy now for their kingdom is long gone.

Now what was left were bones and ash along with the silence of their departure.

Day by day Samael and Limbo mapped the entire place. There were traps but nothing Samael wasn't familiar with. With how old the tomb was most of them were already rotting.

Eventually, Samael soon found the entrance to the castle itself.

Looking over to Limbo, Samael nodded as he quietly pushed the door over, looking around where he was to find himself in what appeared to be an empty room.

Entering inside, it seems to be a memorial room of sort. He could hear and feel the presence of omens on the other side of the walls but none of them seemed to pay mind to this room considering the door to the tomb was hidden.

This was a way in.

Returning to Hammel and the rest, Samael laid out their plan.

"Once the battle barge is finished, we will launch a frontal assault on the front gate. We will take them by surprise and kill as many as we can, we need to lure their attention to us and us alone," Samael drew lines over their maps. "While we do so, Arthur and Limbo will sneak inside through the tomb chambers. They will sabotage the enemy lines while they are busy dealing with us."

Everyone nodded in unison.

"Expect heavy resistance. Only us Hammel can use subzones so we need to ensure the attention of the enemy general is unto us and not them," Samael gaze upon the vice captain as the man nodded.

"They won't even know they're inside," Hammel said.

"Good, then our plan begins tomorrow," Samael stared off to the direction of the fortress as he gathered his resolve.

There will be a bloodbath soon.
