Chapter 49: Intruders At Mega-Tech!
The flickering light rose several meters before stopping at the very top of a street light. Which then gazed down upon the world in this dark evening.
Reflected within those red lights were large buildings left with only their outer shells, houses with half their walls collapsed, and the remains of cars dispersed everywhere.
The gloomy green-red fluorescence could be seen everywhere under the night sky.
What was once considered a city that had been developed for more than thirty years was now considered a ruin in all but a few hours.
A dazzling flame suddenly erupted at the street in front of Megatech not too far away. Sounds of humans speaking could be heard, startling the firefly away.
"What is the situation up there?" On the ground floor of Mega tech, a tactical team of seven people stood at the side of a large older man who had a large cigarette in his mouth as he asked.
"Vera counted about seventeen survivors holing on the top floor, male and female included." One of the seven reported to the captain.
"Any individual with combat training within the group?" The captain sucked in a deep breath of smoke and radiation altogether as he asked.
"She's not sure, but according to her, there might be two with at least basic level of combat amongst the survivors. One is the minister's son while the other is a janitor within the company."
"These are easy pickings captain. Give the order and we will deal with them appropriately after all, it's only the minister's son we were asked to retrieve." One of the female mercenaries grinned, with brightened eyes.
The captain puffed one last smoke before throwing the exhausted cigarette to the ground.
"There's no need for that. There might be a few Enhanced among the team for them to have survived that long. Inform Vera, Sting and Hydra to retrieve the minister's son by morning. For now, we go below to retrieve the Nano cell. That is the most important."
His words were filled with authority and in as much as the other mercenaries wanted to have their fun, they couldn't disobey the commands of their captain.
Usually, a bunch of mercenaries don't band together to form teams, as they were a bunch of arrogant individuals. But these mercenaries seem to fear the one they called captain and from the aura he was exuding, they were right to fear him. His level of strength wasn't one an ordinary human could compare with.
The captain carefully pulled out another large cigarette, his finger unexpectedly start to emit an intense scorching heat, releasing a skitle orange glow emanating from deep within his bones.
Fumes started to rise from the cigarette's butt and with the rapid combustion of energy, fire bloomed!
Whoosh!
The cigarette in his hands blazed
and the captain inhaled deeply, retracting his index finger and his thumb, slightly swaying them in the air, the glow faded with the rushing of the wind.
The other Mercenaries were all casual, not the least bit shocked by the fact that their captain had just lit a cigarette in flames with just
his finger, a situation that was ludicrous in the previous era. But the awe in their eyes was pretty plain to see.
[S-Rank, Hell Inferno]
"McDeath, have you acquired the layout of the entire building?" The captain suddenly asked.
A dark-skinned member nodded and brought out a half-burnt map. "A secret Biotech doesn't seem to be printed on this map and even if it was, the fire must have burnt that part away." The dark-skinned man shook his head, dropping the map on the security counter.
The captain frowned. "This place is large, searching for a hidden Bio-Lab here would take forever. McDeath, search for any abnormalities with the building structures within the map with the assistance of your bio-lens, with the topmost part and the underground as a priority. We must find the Nano cells and get the hell out of here by tomorrow and get to the base before noon, I'm getting sick of the stench here already."
The captain inhaled a large puff of the cigarette to rid his senses of the stench of corpses and toxic radiation floating in the air.
"Chief, I think I found something. The west side elevator over here. The cables used for the elevator shaft in this part are a few meters longer than the ones used in the other elevators, although by a negligible amount, it still couldn't escape my eyes." The dark-skinned man said excitedly.
"Couldn't it just be an error in the measurement?" One of the other members retorted.
This immediately reduced the dark-skinned man's excitement and he scowled. "To build a company this large, do you think they could afford to make even the slightest bit of mistake?"
"That's enough. McDeath, continue with your explanation." The voice of the captain immediately shut the two of them up.
"What I'm trying to say is that the bio-lab we are searching for might be underground and can only be accessed by this particular Elevator."
The dark-skinned man then walked to a pillar near the west side elevator, he ripped apart a metallic cover and pointed his torch, revealing a mechanism inside the large pillar.
"These buildings operate on electromagnetic inductions, In case there's a fire, they are held in place by a fail-safe braking system that operates even when dark, but If I cut this cable, the elevator will free fall and if it free falls three meters past this ground floor, then I'm pretty sure it is the underground space lab we are looking for." The other mercenaries nodded at the idea. It was a pretty sound one.
"What if the elevator is stuck on the top floor? Then we have a free falling elevator that will cause a massive ruckus once it reaches the ground floor, there's even a possibility of destroying the underground lab isn't it." The captain said with a tight frown.
"That's also true, but this is a manual braking system for the elevator, in the event something happens to the system. When I pull, the elevator braking system will latch tightly onto the cable, stopping the elevator from free falling."
