Villain Redemption System

Chapter 5: Labyrinth Of Illusions (2)

Kael collapsed to his knees, his breathing heavy. The room brightened, the oppressive fog lifting. The key floated towards him, its glow soft and welcoming.

He reached out to it and the system chimed with a notification:

[ TRIAL COMPLETE.

Reward: Memory Fragment Unlocked ]

Kael's heart sank as the key dissolved in his hand, and the familiar warmth of a memory fragment consumed him.

In the blink of an eye, he saw himself in the meadow, this time, standing beside the woman from his first memory. Her voice was soft and tranquil, filled with joy.

"You promised to protect me, Kael," she said, her eyes filled with trust.

Kael smiled—a genuine, unburdened smile. "And I will. Always."

The memory shifted. The meadow burned. Her voice turned to screams. Kael reached for her but she was torn away, her form dissolving into ash.

His own voice rang out, a desperate roar: "No!"

Kael jolted back, the stairs to the next floor looming ahead. He clenched his fists, his mind swirling with questions. Who was she? What had he done?

"Kael, focus," he muttered, urging his mind to return to reality. The system chimed and he raised his head to the shifting golden letters.

[ REDEMPTION SCORE UPDATED.

Progress satisfactory. ]

Kael pushed himself to his feet, his jaw set with determination. "I'm coming for answers," he muttered, ascending the stairs.

The third floor awaited, holding an unpredictable adventure.

The stairway to the third floor was narrow and suffocating, the air growing colder with each step. Kael's breaths came out in short bursts, fogging up the freezing air.

The warmth of the memory fragment still lingered in his heart but it was overshadowed by the weight of his vision—her voice, her screams, and the unrelenting guilt that came with it.

The stairs came to an abrupt stop, opening into a chamber lit by a dim otherworldly light. The floor was made of cracked marble, veins of silver running through the floor like ancient scars. At the center of the room stood a pedestal, and atop it was a broken sword—his new weapon.

He stared at the floating sword on the verge of approaching it but a notification suddenly flashed before him:

[ TRIAL: REFORGING THE BLADE OF TRUTH.

Objective: Restore the weapon to unlock its power.

Beware: Each strike you make carries the weight of your sins. ]

Kael approached the pedestal cautiously, his eyes fixed on the broken blade. Its hilt was tarnished, the once-pristine steel covered in rust and dried blood.

"The Blade of Truth," he murmured, running a finger over the jagged edge. "Looks more like the blade of failure."

As he touched it, a surge of energy pulsed within him, shooting through him like a sharp blade. His surroundings shifted, the chamber dissolving into darkness.

"What could this be?" Kael muttered, trying to adapt to the sudden darkness.

Suddenly, a sound echoed like crackling fire, and the lights reappeared, dimly lighting the room up. Kael slowly opened his eyes and found himself standing in a forge, the air heavy with heat and the scent of molten metal.

The forge was vast, its walls lined with tools and weapons glowing with faint runic inscriptions. A massive anvil stood at the center, surrounded by roaring flames.

Behind it loomed a spectral figure clad in blacksmith's armor, its face covered by a mask. The figure spoke, its voice deep and resonant much like the Arbiter's.

"To reforge the blade, you must confront the weight of your past. Each strike will summon an echo of sins you carry. Only by enduring them can you forge the weapon anew."

Kael clenched his fists, clearly fed up with the same style of trials. "More ghosts from my past? Fine. Let's get this over with."

The figure stepped aside, gesturing towards an anvil. The broken sword floated into place, its jagged pieces glowing faintly.

Kael lifted the hammer provided by the forge. It was heavier than he expected, its handle carved with symbols he couldn't read. He hesitated for a moment before raising it high and bringing it down on the broken blade.

Kael hadn't worked with a blacksmith and so, he had no clue on how swords are forged. He repeated raising the hammer and bringing it down multiple times—the only skill he knew in the field.

The sound of metal striking metal reverberated through the forge, but it wasn't alone. The air around Kael shimmered, and from the flames emerged a figure—a soldier in tattered armor, his eyes hollow and accusing.

"You left us to die," the soldier muttered, his voice echoing with anguish. "We followed you, trusted you and you abandoned us."

Kael gritted his teeth, the hammer trembling in his hands. The memory of the battle flashed in his mind—his army outnumbered, his soldiers pleading for orders. And him... walking away.

The soldier's form shifted, drawing a blade that burned with white-hot fire. "Then you will pay the price."

The battle was brief but brutal. The soldier fought with the desperation of the betrayed, his strikes fueled by anger and pain. Kael dodged and blocked, his movements slow and deliberate. Each strike against the soldier felt like a blow to his own soul but Kael refused to falter.

When he finally defeated him, the soldier dissolved into ash, and the forge grew silent once more. The blade on the anvil glowed faintly, the cracks in its surface beginning to mend.

Kael lifted the hammer again, his arms trembling from the effort. This time, the flames grew higher as the hammer struck the blade, and two figures emerged.

A man and woman, both dressed in simple clothes. Their faces conveyed sorrow, and their eyes fixed on Kael.

"You destroyed our village," the woman said, her voice trembling. "We begged for mercy but you brought only fire."

The man stepped forward, clenching his fists and trying to contain his anger. "You called it 'necessary' . Necessary for what? Your conquest? Your glory?"

Kael felt his chest tighten. He remembered that village—its people. He told himself it was a strategic move, a message to his enemies.

"You wouldn't understand. You're both normal people beneath me," he replied without the slightest bit of emotion.
