Chapter 17: Haunting

Zhao Tiezhu returned home and fell asleep on the kang.

He slept so deeply that he missed both lunch and dinner.

He couldn't help it; his body was too frail.

It's rare to see someone as dedicated as Zhao Tienan, even if they're a village doctor.

That midnight, in a daze, Zhao Tiezhu suddenly heard a spine-chilling sound.

It was like a wild cat in heat, making one's scalp tingle with goosebumps.

The next second, his room door was pushed open.

"Mr. Zhao, there's... there's a ghost, it's so scary!"

Cao Lei was scared out of her wits, immediately burrowing under the covers, her soft body trembling, her head buried deep in Zhao Tienan's chest.

"Hiss..."

Zhao Tienan gasped on the spot.

This sudden warmth in his arms excited him immediately, his heart pounding incessantly.

"Don't be silly, there's no such thing as ghosts. Don't scare yourself."

While inhaling the intoxicatingly sweet scent on the woman's body, Zhao Tienan gently comforted her.

Having lived in Fengshan Village for so long, although he'd heard many ghost stories, he'd never seen what a real ghost looked like.

"It's true!"

"This afternoon, Feng came to chat with me. She said many people have died at our clinic, and the resentment hasn't dissipated, turning into fierce ghosts seeking revenge."

"Just now, I saw a ghostly figure on the curtain, and it said it was going to take me away!"

Cao Lei clung tightly around Zhao Tienan's waist, her full, firm chest pressing against him, instantly making Zhao Tienan's mouth go dry.

"Ghostly figure?"

Zhao Tienan glanced at his bedroom curtain and indeed saw a shadow with outstretched claws, accompanied by eerie wailing.

As a doctor, he never believed in ghosts or spirits.

The next second, Zhao Tienan quietly moved over and peeked through a crack in the curtain.

This wasn't some fierce ghost or apparition.

It was clearly Zhang Danfeng draped in a few torn burlap sacks, jumping around like performing a ritual at the window.

"That damn woman, knowing that Cao Lei is timid, she's pretending to be a ghost here, obviously trying to scare her away!"

Zhao Tienan muttered to himself and immediately told Cao Lei the truth.

"Huh? Is it really Feng?"

"I didn't offend her; why would she do this to me?"

Cao Lei asked fearfully, her eyes glistening with innocence.

"Don't ask so many questions. To stop her from bothering us, you must cooperate with me, okay?"

Zhao Tienan made a gesture for silence, then covered both of them with the quilt and started plotting together.

"Ah!"

A few minutes later, Cao Lei, using all her strength, let out a sharp scream and then lay straight on the kang, her body convulsing.

Zhao Tienan immediately hoisted her onto his shoulder, wearing only shorts, and rushed out.

He grabbed Zhang Danfeng, who was still "performing a ritual," and threw the burlap sack from her head to the side.

"Who let you play ghost here in the middle of the night?"

"I'm not scaring you; this intern has a congenital heart condition. She's now in shock because of you. Even I can't treat her; she must be transferred to the provincial hospital for emergency care. If anything happens, get ready to face jail time."

Zhao Tienan shouted sternly a few times and then immediately ran outside to borrow a tricycle for a night escape from the village...
