Victor vs. the Hopping Dead: A Vampire's Hong Kong Misadventure

Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Victor’s Past Catches Up

The night was unusually quiet as Victor returned to his modest apartment in the heart of Hong Kong. The city's usual cacophony of car horns and distant chatter was replaced with an eerie stillness. Victor couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. He paused at the building's entrance, his vampiric senses picking up faint whispers on the wind—a sound no mortal could hear.

As he stepped into his apartment, the feeling intensified. The lights flickered briefly, and Victor froze. Someone was inside. He closed the door softly, letting the shadows envelop him as he moved silently through the space. His preternatural vision adjusted to the dark, revealing a tall figure standing by the window, silhouetted against the neon skyline.

"Maximilian," Victor said, his voice low but edged with irritation.

The figure turned, a smirk playing on his lips. Maximilian Hart, Victor's elder brother, looked every bit the aristocratic vampire—immaculately dressed, his sharp features illuminated by the faint glow of the city lights.

"Little brother," Maximilian drawled. "You've been busy."

Victor crossed his arms, leaning against the doorframe. "What are you doing here, Max?"

Maximilian stepped forward, his movements deliberate and graceful. "I've been keeping an eye on you. You've stirred up quite a bit of trouble for someone who came here to disappear."

Victor's jaw tightened. "I didn't ask for any of this. The trouble found me."

Maximilian chuckled. "Trouble always does with you. But this…" He gestured toward a stack of papers on the desk—Victor's notes on the recent events involving the jiangshi. "Mixing with human magic? Ancient rituals? Hopping zombies? Really, Victor, even for you, this is… unconventional."

Victor sighed, brushing past his brother to snatch up the papers. "I'm handling it. You don't need to be here."

Maximilian's expression hardened. "On the contrary. If someone is meddling with magic powerful enough to raise armies of the undead, it's only a matter of time before it draws attention—the kind of attention that puts all of us at risk."

Victor turned to face him, his gaze steady. "Then help me stop it. Or stay out of my way."

For a moment, neither spoke, the tension between them palpable. Finally, Maximilian sighed, his usual arrogance giving way to something softer. "You've always been stubborn, Victor. Fine. I'll stay. But only because I'm curious to see how you plan to get out of this mess."

The following evening, Victor introduced Maximilian to Master Zhang and Leo. The meeting was predictably awkward. Zhang eyed Maximilian with suspicion, his hands hovering near his talismans, while Leo couldn't stop staring at the new arrival's polished demeanor.

"You didn't mention you had a brother," Leo whispered to Victor.

"He's not exactly someone I advertise," Victor muttered back.

Maximilian, for his part, took it all in stride, offering a charming smile and a slight bow to Zhang. "Master Zhang, is it? I've heard much about your… expertise."

Zhang didn't respond, his eyes narrowing as he studied Maximilian. "Your presence complicates things."

"So I've been told," Maximilian replied smoothly.

Leo, sensing the tension, cleared his throat. "So, uh, where do we go from here?"

Zhang reluctantly turned his attention back to the task at hand. "We need more information about the person behind these rituals. The library only gave us part of the picture. We need to consult someone who knows both Eastern and Western magic."

Maximilian's interest piqued. "I might know someone."

Victor raised an eyebrow. "Oh, this should be good."

The group's next stop was a secluded tea house in the older part of the city, where Maximilian's contact, a half-vampire, half-sorceress named Selina, resided. Selina was as enigmatic as she was knowledgeable, her tea house doubling as a sanctuary for those seeking refuge from supernatural conflicts.

Selina greeted Maximilian with a wry smile and a knowing look. "Maximilian Hart. Still causing trouble, I see."

"Selina," Maximilian replied, his tone dripping with charm. "Always a pleasure."

Selina's gaze shifted to Victor. "And you must be the younger brother. I've heard stories."

Victor sighed. "Wonderful. Let's skip the introductions and get to the point."

Selina chuckled but obliged, leading them to a private room. As the group explained the situation, Selina's expression grew serious. "You're dealing with something far older than you realize. This isn't just about raising jiangshi. This is about control—domination of life and death itself."

She pulled a worn book from a nearby shelf, flipping through its pages until she found an illustration of a complex ritual. "The Binding of Shadows. If completed, it could create an unstoppable servant. But the cost is… catastrophic."

Zhang studied the page closely. "Catastrophic how?"

"The ritual doesn't just bind the undead," Selina explained. "It drains the life force of everything around it. If this person succeeds, they won't just raise an army—they'll destroy everything in their path."

Victor exchanged a grim look with Maximilian. For once, they were in complete agreement. This had to be stopped, no matter the cost.

The group lingered in Selina's tea house as they pieced together their next steps. The air was heavy with the scent of jasmine tea, though no one was in the mood to drink.

"So how do we stop this?" Leo asked, breaking the silence.

Selina leaned back, her sharp eyes scanning the group. "The ritual requires immense energy to complete. If you can disrupt the source of that energy, you can stop it. But getting close enough won't be easy."

"Do you know where this is happening?" Zhang pressed.

Selina hesitated before nodding. "There have been disturbances reported near Lantau Island. If I had to guess, that's where they're gathering power."

Maximilian glanced at Victor, his tone laced with dry humor. "Ready for a little island adventure, brother?"

Victor rolled his eyes. "If it means stopping this, I'll go anywhere."

Selina's expression softened slightly. "Be careful. Whoever is behind this won't hesitate to kill anyone who gets in their way."

"We'll manage," Victor said firmly, though a flicker of doubt lingered in his mind.

As the group left the tea house, the weight of their mission pressed heavily on their shoulders. The Binding of Shadows was unlike anything they had faced before, and failure was not an option. For Victor, the stakes were personal. This wasn't just about stopping a dangerous ritual—it was about proving to himself, and to Maximilian, that he could rise to the challenge.

The shadows of Hong Kong deepened as the group prepared for the battle ahead, their uneasy alliance the only hope against the darkness threatening to consume them all.
