Chapter 4 - First Broadcast (2)
-Please share some war stories
“War stories…”
I started pondering what to say first in response to the viewer’s request.
I think it would be best to explain what the 5th Middle East War was like first.
“Just a moment…”
I immediately opened Paint and lightly adjusted the broadcast screen.
I moved my cam video to the corner and checked if the chat was coming up well.
-What kind of broadcast is this?
-A war veteran sharing stories
-What war?
-Middle East War
In that short time, viewers who were already here gave a brief explanation to the newly incoming viewers.
I don’t need to step in myself, so it couldn’t be more convenient.
“Alright, then I’ll briefly explain how the 5th Middle East War started.”
-OK
-Ah, just hurry and tell us war stories lol
I should keep it brief so viewers don’t get bored if I drag it out too long.
With skillful hands, I draw a map of Solomon and Jibro on Paint.
Having seen maps so many times on the battlefield, I can roughly sketch out the outline even with quick strokes.
“The country on the west here is Jibro, and the country on the east is Solomon.”
I colored Jibro’s map red and Solomon’s map blue.
“Jibro and Solomon were in conflict over oil fields located between their borders. Solomon’s side claimed it was theirs because the oil fields were more overlapped within their border, and Jibro, of course, mobilized their army to make a show of force, saying that’s nonsense. Solomon responded by mobilizing their army as well, and the atmosphere between the two countries rapidly deteriorated.”
I drew a yellow star to emphasize the location of the oil fields that became the fuse for this damned war.
“In this situation, the United States, an ally of Solomon, stepped in to support Solomon’s claim that the oil fields belonged to them, and Solomon’s oil companies excitedly started extracting oil…”
I slowly covered the yellow star on the map with a black circle.
“Eventually, Jibro, who was extremely pissed off, declared war on Solomon, and the war began. In the early stages, Solomon couldn’t exert proper strength as they were pushed back by the offensive of the Jibro army, who had made thorough preparations.”
But not long after, the war reached a major turning point.
“The United States, which had been standing by idly, started providing weapons to the continuously retreating Solomon army, and the Solomon Ministry of Defense began recruiting troops by establishing an international legion composed of foreigners.”
Mercenaries and retired soldiers from around the world started gathering to support them.
-So that’s how you entered the international legion?
“Yes, that’s right. I was assigned to the international legion and deployed in various battles.”
In response to my words, reactions quickly started coming up in the chat window.
-Then have you killed people too?
-Of course he must have killed
-Well, he could have been a medic or had another position
-They don’t give medals of honor to just anyone, lesbian…
“Of course I’ve killed people. Quite a lot, in fact.”
-Crazy;;
-This is a bit scary…
-I wonder what the standard for ‘quite a lot’ is…
While looking at the reactions in the chat window, I briefly recalled my kill record.
Official record: 500 people.
Unofficial: in the 700s.
Thinking about it now, I really killed a lot of enemies.
Killing them by shooting with guns, with grenades, running them over with cars, stabbing them with knives…
While I was briefly lost in memories, a viewer’s question appeared in the chat window.
-What’s the atmosphere like on the battlefield?
“Hmm… Just an ordinary desert? But with bullets flying around and shells and missiles exploding, so it’s noisy. I guess you could say it’s a bit of a chaotic atmosphere?”
-Have you ever been shot?
“I’ve been shot a fucking lot. I got shot on the first day of battlefield deployment. While riding in a Humvee.”
-???
-How did you survive…
-What’s a Humvee
-It’s like a Jeep-like car
Seeing my words, the viewers’ chats started coming up quickly, seemingly surprised.
Well, people who have been shot probably aren’t common in Korea.
“So, what happened was…”
.
.
.
.
A line of Humvees rumbling through the city streets.
Kim Sung-hyun, sitting in the back seat of the Humvee moving at the front of the formation, was crumpled in the corner of the vehicle, visibly tense.
He, who had died in a traffic accident on the day he was discharged from the military, had fallen into an unfamiliar gender-reversed world.
As a new recruit in the international legion of a Middle Eastern country with an unfamiliar name, no less.
After organizing his thoughts several times during the short training period.
Finally, he could reach the conclusion that he had to fight on the battlefield to survive.
Once he was already assigned to the Solomon army and had heard military information, there was no way for him to escape.
He just had to comply and fight bravely.
However, sadly, reason and emotion often diverge.
He could barely endure through the training, but once he was actually deployed in the field, extreme pressure was weighing down on Sung-hyun’s body.
Seeing his face turning not just pale but blue, a comrade chuckled and joked:
“Don’t freeze up too much. They say those who freeze up like that die first.”
“Hiiik…”
“Hahaha, don’t scare him too much. At this rate, his mental will break before he even fights.”
“Kik kik kik…”
At the sight of Sung-hyun unnecessarily holding his breath and hugging his gun, all the soldiers in the same vehicle started laughing as if they found him cute.
Feeling embarrassed by their reaction, Sung-hyun blushed and adjusted his posture.
Up until this point, everything seemed to be going well.
While releasing tension by exchanging mildly mischievous jokes with comrades he had become close to during the training period, the Humvee started making a left turn with a commercial building on its side.
Ti ti ti ti ting-!!!!
Bullets that flew in from somewhere started digging into the Humvee’s armor plates.
With loud metallic sounds, sparks flew everywhere, throwing the soldiers into confusion.
“Wh-what?!!!!”
“It’s an enemy attack!!! Reverse…”
Puk-
With an ominous noise, a hole appears in the driver’s seat window.
“Damn it, Yelena!!!”
A small bullet lodged in the head of the driver who was trying to radio the other Humvees following behind.
Everyone was shocked at the sight of her, her forehead shattered, head slumped on the steering wheel, spilling sticky brain fragments.
A comrade who had been laughing and chatting just moments ago was brutally murdered.
There was no way anyone could maintain composure.
“You fucking bastards!!!”
Tu ta ta ta tang-!!!
A soldier enraged by the death of his comrade started spraying the machine gun mounted on top of the vehicle.
Ti ti ti ting-!!!
Bullets fly in again with sharp sounds, but they can’t attack the machine gunner, blocked by the bulletproof plate installed in front of the machine gun.
While the machine gun fires warning shots to draw the attention of the enemies, the soldiers inside the vehicle were moving urgently.
Swish-
“Ugh…”
The squad leader sitting in the passenger seat pushed aside the corpse of the driver, who was growing cold, and frowned.
The cerebrospinal fluid and brain fragments that had flowed from the driver’s head remained intact on the steering wheel.
However, given the urgent situation, the squad leader suppressed the rising nausea and placed her hands on the steering wheel.
She manipulates the transmission to shift into reverse gear and immediately steps on the right pedal.
Vroom-
As the Humvee reverses roughly, the bodies of the soldiers inside lurch forward.
It would have been good if they could take cover inside the alley like this.
However, luck was not on the side of Sung-hyun’s squad members.
Kuung-!!
“Argh!”
“We’ve collided with Vehicle 2!”
The soldiers tumble around inside the vehicle from the powerful impact.
Due to reversing too hastily, they ended up getting their rear hit by the bumper of Vehicle 2, which was moving behind a building after assessing the situation.
“Damn it…!!!”
“…Squad leader! In front!!! In front!!!”
The squad leader tried to move the vehicle again, but had to look straight ahead at the words of the soldier sitting in the back seat.
Soon, the image of a Jibro soldier aiming a long cylindrical object was reflected in her pupils.
The squad leader could only scream out a single word with a shocked expression.
“RPG!!!”
Shiiik-
Tu kwa ang-!!!
With an impact beyond imagination, the Humvee’s heavy body rises high into the sky.
The completely overturned vehicle was instantly engulfed in flames.
“Ughhhh…”
“Get a grip and check personnel!”
Kim Sung-hyun, who had barely escaped from the vehicle with the help of a comrade just before being hit by the RPG, looked around while suffering from tinnitus that felt like his eardrums were about to burst.
The machine gunner who had been holding onto the top-mounted machine gun couldn’t escape.
Her body could be seen slightly sticking out from under the overturned Humvee, burning black.
“Where’s the squad leader?!”
“She’s down! For now, let’s take cover inside the building…”
Puk-!
“Kahak…”
“Raimi!”
Sung-hyun could only helplessly watch as Raimi, who had just gotten up for a moment, fell backward while clutching her abdomen.
Fallen on her back and gasping for breath, she was still alive.
Sung-hyun dragged his trembling body to crawl towards her and checked her condition.
There was a hole in her bulletproof vest, but no physical injury.
It was clear that the plate in Raimi’s bulletproof vest had luckily stopped the bullet.
Sung-hyun put his arm under Raimi’s armpit to lift her up and shouted to a comrade who was aiming his rifle in a prone position:
“Raimi is okay! I’ll move her inside!”
“Got it! I’ll provide covering fire!”
Ta ta ta tang-!
As the comrade’s rifle spat fire, Sung-hyun’s body, hugging Raimi, started moving.
He moves towards the inside of the commercial building with calm steps, careful not to trip.
Just as the building’s wall was about to completely cover his and Raimi’s bodies.
Puk-!
“Kuk…”
Sung-hyun felt an impact as if he had been punched hard in the abdomen and fell backward.
Someone had shot him.
“Ughhhh…”
Dark red blood stained Sung-hyun’s hand as he felt his stomach with trembling fingers.
Had he been shot?
“Aaaagh…!!”
Screaming in pain, Sung-hyun crawled into the building interior.
Of course, he didn’t forget to take care of Raimi’s limp body.
Just as he managed to lean against the building wall and catch his breath, the comrade who had finished providing covering fire ran towards Sung-hyun.
The comrade’s face hardened when he saw Sung-hyun’s blood-soaked body.
“Chris, are you okay?!”
“Blood… There’s blood…”
Sung-hyun, who had fallen into panic, couldn’t properly answer his comrade’s words.
All he could see was the sight of his abdomen covered in blood.
However, his comrade shook Sung-hyun’s body with a pained expression.
“Chris, snap out of it! That’s not your blood!”
“Ughh…?”
“That’s Raimi’s blood!”
At his comrade’s last words, Sung-hyun looked at Raimi’s face cradled in his arms with a dumb expression.
Half of her head was blown away, leaving only the jaw.
Soon, Sung-hyun could understand the situation.
That the bullet that had penetrated Raimi’s head had hit his bulletproof vest directly.
That in the process, Raimi’s contents had splattered all over his body.
“Huaaaargh!!!!”
In this hellish situation, he screamed.
.
.
.
.
.
“…Well, something like that happened.”
Reminiscing about old memories vaguely, my feelings are strange.
I’m now calmly talking about an experience that felt so maddening at the time.
I couldn’t help but feel deeply moved.
I turned my head briefly to check the reactions in the chat window.
-I’m sorry…
-Damn, I feel so bad for you
-What kind of life have you lived…
[PassingByMilitary Enthusiast – Thank you for the 50,000 won donation]
-Oppa, please accept this at least… Stay strong…
“…?”
Did the story of Raimi’s head exploding move them that much?
Somehow, I feel like I can sense pity in the donation message…
