Versatile Mage: Starting with the White Tiger Pendant

Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Attracting Attention

In just a few minutes, Dean Xiao concluded his speech swiftly and decisively, without giving other leaders a chance to speak. He immediately started the Beast Duel, a decision much appreciated by the live-stream viewers.

"There are too few leaders who get straight to the point... Or rather, incompetent leaders can only maintain their authority through vague rhetoric."

"Finally! The main event begins! Let's see some serious action."

"Let me see if there's a beautiful and powerful mage wife among the newcomers this year."

"Dream on! This isn't a normal university. Any female mage here could crush you with one hand."

The summoning department was the first to enter. Most of them were male students, with a couple of ordinary-looking females mixed in.

The audience's feedback came swiftly:

"Disappointing. They don't seem that impressive."

"Rubbish. A beginner summoner can casually command a servant-level creature to wipe out seven or eight mages. They might look plain, but they absolutely dominate their peers."

Backstage, Lu Jun took a deep breath. This was a stage that attracted countless eyes, but he had been through many storms and felt little fear. Instead, a touch of madness stirred in his heart—he wanted to put on a spectacular show.

Calm and composed, he began walking toward the stage alone.

Next to him, Gu Han asked in confusion, "Lu Jun, wait. What about your three other teammates?"

The Beast Duel usually grouped students from different departments into teams of four. There were 25 groups in total, with summoners being split among them to ensure balance; otherwise, the summoning department would dominate.

But Lu Jun waved him off. "No need. I'm a mid-tier mage. I can handle this alone. The others are optional."

The moment these words left his mouth, the hundred students present froze, their faces darkening in anger.

They were all elites, prodigies chosen from across the country and from among thousands of new students. Back in their hometowns, they were the top scorers, the cream of the crop.

To be dismissed so casually was naturally infuriating.

However, they managed to keep their composure. Lu Jun was notorious for being ruthless and wouldn't hesitate to strike. It was better to wait and see. If he wasn't as terrifying as the rumors claimed, they'd challenge him fairly.

After all, no one thought Lu Jun would dare to commit murder in the academy.

Expressionless, Lu Jun intentionally provoked hostility, setting the stage for what was to come.

His strength spoke for itself, and with the academy's protection and his ties to the Clear Sky Hunter Agency, even the Black Vatican didn't scare him. A few mere students? He could crush them without needing to be polite. It was better to compete boldly.

As Lu Jun ascended the stage alone, the crowd first erupted into cheers, then gradually quieted. The students exchanged puzzled looks.

"What's going on? Why is there only one person? Where are the others?"

Even the 'veterans' in the live stream, familiar with the Beast Duel rules, filled the screen with question marks:

"???"

Soon, some students recognized Lu Jun, and the whispers spread like wildfire through the audience. Even some senior students watching were intrigued.

The crowd fell silent, their wide eyes fixed on Lu Jun.

Meanwhile, the live stream viewers were still confused.

"What's happening? Why isn't anyone saying anything? Who is this guy?"

"Hmm... I think I know. It's related to something that happened in Shanghai two months ago."

"Stop being cryptic! Spill it!"

Some local viewers began explaining, and the chat quickly warmed up. Gasps filled the comments as anticipation soared.

They were tired of seeing group battles against monsters. A one-on-one fight with a monster? Now that felt like a brutal cage match!

The summoning department head, unaware of the details surrounding Lu Jun, frowned and asked, "Just you?"

Lu Jun replied calmly, "One is enough."

"Arrogant!" the teacher snapped, turning to his ten students with a cold expression. "If you lose, don't just expect to lose your resources. Prepare for harsh training in the future!"

The summoners exchanged nervous glances. They'd all browsed the internet and knew Lu Jun's reputation.

"Teacher, are you trying to send us to our deaths?!"

Even the Black Vatican feared him, especially since he could easily take on a dozen servant-level creatures.

Dean Xiao smiled and nodded. "Since Lu Jun is confident, let's begin."

Left with no choice, one of the summoning students, a skinny boy named He Ming, reluctantly stepped onto the stage.

"Lu Jun."

"He Ming."

The two exchanged names. Lu Jun didn't recognize the boy, guessing he hadn't crossed paths with Mo Fan.

He Ming quickly began casting his spell, summoning his creature to the stage.

A massive demonic wolf appeared with a deafening howl. Standing three meters tall at the shoulder, it was a spectral wolf beast, one of the most common summons in the department. Its strength was top-tier for a servant-level creature.

To be accepted into Pearl Academy, even beginner summoners had to be the best among their peers.

The wolf's savage aura swept across the stage, its fishy breath sending chills through the audience. Most students had never seen a monster up close and sat frozen in fear. Those in the front rows trembled uncontrollably.

Book knowledge could never compare to the visceral reality of a beast.

Meanwhile, the live stream chat froze momentarily. Many viewers couldn't handle the shock and left, leaving only two to three thousand veterans.

The backstage teacher sighed. He'd seen this before. Monsters weren't like zoo animals. Modern viewers probably couldn't even handle footage of wild tigers hunting, let alone actual monsters.

Onstage, Lu Jun eyed the spectral wolf with interest. His hands itched for a fight. Though it was a different species, it was still a wolf. He hadn't fought one since leaving Bo City.

The spectral wolf lowered its body, ready to pounce.

But its sharp instincts sensed the man's calm exterior masked a bloodthirsty and violent aura. Around him, it smelled the vengeful souls of its kind, clinging to him like a shroud.

The wolf froze, unable to move its limbs.

Fear gripped its heart, and it refused to attack.

He Ming tried repeatedly to command it, but the beast remained paralyzed, leaving him embarrassed in front of the crowd.

The summoning department head scowled, furious at his student's failure. "Worthless! As a summoner, you can't even command your creature properly!"

The stalemate lasted several seconds. The live stream viewers, having recovered from their initial shock, began flooding the chat with complaints:

"What are you doing? Attack already!"

"Hurry up! This is agonizing!"

"Boring! I want to see blood!"

Lu Jun, seemingly hearing their cries, began tracing his star trails. His eyes glowed dark green as a curse magic aura surged around him. A level-three beginner spell, Mist of Fear: Nightmare, activated.

The spectral wolf saw a pair of sinister green eyes materialize before it, their baleful energy spreading through the void like a curse.
