Vengeful Ascension: The Rise of a Demon Emperor

Chapter 59: The Sixth Lower Demon

Deep in the blackened heart of Erebos, where the very air crackled with despair and decay, Krynos, the Bone Architect, sat motionless atop his throne of fused bone and shadow. Towering pillars carved from screaming faces loomed overhead, and the walls themselves seemed to weep—thin, spectral streams of corrupted essence dripping like blood.

In the center of the chamber, a projection swirled above a pool of shimmering, crimson liquid—a grotesque tableau of the Breles Empire.

Krynos's skeletal fingers, tipped with obsidian claws, tapped rhythmically against the arm of his throne. Despite his deathly stillness, his cold, red eyes burned with calculation, observing the turmoil playing out across the empire. His breath, though unnecessary, escaped in a rasp, carrying an air of ancient menace.

"Adrian Falter," Krynos murmured, the name rolling off his tongue with unsettling amusement. His voice, hollow and deep, reverberated across the chamber. "The boy who slew Dravokh."

At the edge of the room, a cloaked figure knelt, shrouded in the thick shadows that clung to the chamber like cobwebs. The figure's voice was low and reverent, betraying its infernal origins.

"My lord Krynos, the Breles Empire festers like an open wound," the spy said, head bowed. "The Noble Alliance of Blood and Coin continues its subterfuge against the emperor. The empire's forces are stretched thin, their trust in their leadership faltering."

"And the knight?" Krynos asked, his tone deceptively soft.

The spy hesitated, as if wary of delivering the news. "Adrian Falter grows in strength. The humans revere him as a hero—a symbol of hope. Yet, his rise stokes resentment among the empire's nobility. They whisper treason against him in secret halls. Even now, the Divine Kingdom of Sucaria watches him closely."

At the mention of Adrian's name, Krynos leaned forward. The movement was slow and deliberate, the creaking of his throne echoing like the groan of old wood. The swirling pool sharpened, revealing Adrian in the midst of battle—a glowing sword cleaving through hordes of lesser demons. The ferocity in his eyes caught Krynos's attention.

"He fights like one who knows only the edge of death," Krynos murmured, his skeletal lips curling into a sinister grin. "He wields no element, yet stands tall against forces far beyond him. Tell me, what drives this mortal so?"

The spy's voice quivered slightly, betraying an ounce of fear. "He is… resolute, my lord. The humans rally behind him. He does not falter, even in the face of overwhelming odds. And because of that, the nobles fear him. They whisper of betrayal."

Krynos let out a hollow, unsettling chuckle that seemed to pull the warmth from the air. "Humans and their fragile egos. How predictable."

He rose from his throne, his tall, gaunt form casting an impossibly large shadow that stretched across the chamber. The swirling image in the crimson pool shifted once more, showing Adrian standing amidst his comrades—Lucas, Kael, Kiera, and Seraphina—all poised for battle, their loyalty unwavering.

Krynos's claw traced the image of Adrian with fascination. "The boy thrives in battle because he is not alone. Remove his pillars of support, and even the mightiest warrior will crumble."

He turned sharply, his hollow gaze falling on the kneeling spy. "The empire's divisions are a gift, but they are not enough. Sow chaos among his comrades. Break their unity. Destroy their trust in him. Then—only then—will Adrian Falter be vulnerable."

The spy nodded vigorously. "As you command, Lord Krynos. I will infiltrate their ranks and spread discord. They will not know whom to trust."

Krynos tilted his head, returning to the image of Adrian. The scene shifted once more, showing him cutting through enemy ranks, his aura flaring with an intensity that unsettled even Krynos. For the briefest moment, the Bone Architect's cruel grin faltered.

"He has something Dravokh did not," Krynos murmured, more to himself than to his spy. "A fire that refuses to be snuffed out. Intriguing."

The pool reflected Adrian's face, streaked with sweat and determination, his jaw set like iron. Krynos's red eyes narrowed.

"Anomalies like him do not appear without reason," Krynos continued. "Perhaps he is a puppet of fate… or a threat to it. No matter. Even the strongest flames can be choked in darkness."

Turning to the far end of the chamber, Krynos's voice boomed, summoning lesser demons from the shadows. Twisted forms emerged—creatures of warped bone and sinew, their bodies writhing with malice.

"You will prepare the next phase," Krynos ordered, his skeletal hand gesturing toward the crimson map that hung on the far wall, depicting the Sylphera Borderlands. "The humans will be tested. Send out the hordes—enough to bleed their forces dry. Adrian Falter must be lured into the heart of chaos. There, he will stand alone."

The demons hissed in assent, vanishing back into the shadows.

Krynos returned to his throne, his fingers steepled as he contemplated his next moves. "Adrian's victories have bought him fame, but fame is a blade that cuts both ways. His allies will suffer for his reputation. His enemies will multiply in the dark."

Before Krynos dismissed the spy, he spoke again, his tone chilling. "And if you fail me… if Adrian Falter eludes us again… your bones will join my throne."

The spy visibly trembled, bowing so low that its forehead nearly touched the stone floor. "I will not fail you, my lord. Adrian will fall."

"See that he does."

As the spy disappeared into the dark, Krynos leaned back into his throne, the grotesque structure groaning beneath him. The crimson pool swirled once more, this time revealing the Breles Empire—a land fraying at the edges, its people divided, and its champions few.

"And so it begins," Krynos whispered. "The humans fight amongst themselves, blind to the greater storm brewing in the shadows."

His skeletal grin widened as the image of Adrian lingered, that defiant fire still burning in his eyes.

"You are a fascinating foe, Adrian Falter," Krynos said softly, almost reverently. "But even the strongest foundations can be eroded. You will stand alone, and when you do… you will break."
