Chapter 35: Emperor's Summon [2]
The rhythmic clatter of hooves echoed through the bustling streets of Ulcea City as the carriage carrying Adrian and his team entered the heart of the Breles Empire. The capital was a marvel of human ingenuity—towering spires adorned with intricate carvings reached toward the sky, and the streets teemed with life. Merchants called out their wares, children ran through alleyways, and nobles moved with purpose, their rich attire gleaming under the afternoon sun.
"This city is… overwhelming," Kiera murmured, her druidic staff resting against her shoulder as she peeked out the window.
"It's more than that," Kael said, his keen eyes scanning the crowd. "It's a fortress hiding in plain sight. Every street, every building—it's designed to protect as much as it is to impress."
Seraphina, sitting beside Adrian, offered a quiet smile. "It's beautiful in its own way. But it feels so… far removed from what we've been through."
Mohan, sitting across from them, folded his arms. "That's the point. Ulcea City isn't just the empire's capital—it's the symbol of its strength. And today, we're here to remind everyone that strength isn't just in walls and banners."
Adrian remained silent, his mind racing as the carriage slowed to a halt before the Imperial Palace.
The team stepped out onto the cobblestone courtyard, the sheer grandeur of the palace dwarfing everything around them. Marble walls gleamed in the sunlight, adorned with banners bearing the golden phoenix of the empire. Knights in gleaming armor stood at attention, their spears crossed in a silent salute as the group approached.
"Imposing, isn't it?" Mohan said, his voice low. "Keep your focus. The court loves a good show, and we're it today."
Adrian adjusted his sword, still scarred from the battle in Galud, and nodded. "Got it."
A royal attendant led them inside, the echo of their footsteps bouncing off polished marble floors. The palace's opulence was overwhelming—golden chandeliers sparkled above, and intricate murals depicting the empire's victories adorned the walls.
Kiera leaned toward Kael and whispered, "Do you think they know how much this could feed the villages we passed?"
Kael smirked but said nothing, his sharp gaze fixed on the path ahead.
They were led to the throne room, a cavernous space filled with dignitaries and nobles, their silken robes shimmering in the light of the massive stained glass windows. At the far end of the room, seated upon an ornately carved golden throne, was Emperor Maximus.
Maximus was a man who exuded authority. His presence filled the room, his broad shoulders and stern expression an embodiment of imperial power. Beside him sat Empress Lyria, her serene demeanor radiating warmth, while Princess Fiona observed the proceedings with a curious, calculating gaze. Crown Prince Karl stood at the emperor's right hand, his posture rigid and his sharp eyes fixed on the newcomers.
The herald's voice rang out: "Presenting the heroes of Galud!"
The murmur of the court fell silent as Adrian and his team advanced. Mohan led the way, his steps steady, and when they reached the base of the dais, they knelt.
"Your Imperial Majesty," Mohan said, his voice unwavering. "We are honored to stand before you."
"Rise," Maximus commanded, his deep voice resonating through the hall. "Today, you are not mere soldiers. Today, you are heroes."
As they stood, Adrian felt the emperor's piercing gaze lock onto him. It was as though Maximus could see through him, weighing his every action, his every thought.
"You have done a great service to this empire," Maximus continued. "You confronted the darkness that threatened Galud and emerged victorious. Because of your courage, the people are free from the shadow that loomed over them."
Empress Lyria leaned forward, her voice softer but no less authoritative. "Your deeds have brought hope to the people. And hope is a rare gift in these times."
Princess Fiona's smile was gentle, but her words carried weight. "The people look to you now. They see strength in your actions."
Then Crown Prince Karl stepped forward, his expression unreadable. "Adrian Falter," he said, his voice sharp and measured. "What drives a man to face a foe as powerful as Leonard Durk?"
Adrian hesitated for a moment before speaking, his voice steady. "To protect those who can't protect themselves, Your Highness. And to honor the people who trust me to stand for them."
The prince's gaze lingered, then he nodded. "A worthy answer."
The emperor raised his hand, and a servant stepped forward with a golden tray holding several objects. "For your bravery and service, Adrian Falter," Maximus said, "you are hereby granted the rank of Knight. From this day forward, you are no longer a trainee but a full warrior of the Breles Empire."
Adrian's breath caught as the servant presented him with a ceremonial sword. Its hilt gleamed with gold inlaid with sapphires, the phoenix emblem engraved at its base. Beside it were vials of shimmering liquid—mana-enhancing potions and elixirs crafted to bolster strength and resilience.
"You have earned this," Maximus said. "Carry this title with honor, and let it remind you of your duty to the empire."
Adrian stepped forward, bowing deeply as he accepted the tray. "Thank you, Your Majesty. I will serve with honor."
The emperor turned to the others. "Mohan, for your wisdom and leadership, you are granted the Gauntlets of Resolve. May they amplify the strength that has guided your comrades."
A servant brought forward a pair of glowing gauntlets, etched with runes that pulsed faintly. Mohan accepted them with a nod. "My thanks, Your Majesty."
"Seraphina," Maximus continued, addressing the healer, "your magic has been a light in the darkest moments. Take this Healer's Amulet, and may it strengthen the power within you."
Seraphina's hands trembled as she accepted the ornate amulet, its crystal center glowing softly. "Thank you, Your Majesty," she said, her voice quiet but firm.
"Kiera, for your connection to the natural world and your unyielding dedication, I bestow upon you the Druid's Circlet. May it enhance your bond with the earth."
Kiera bowed deeply, her hands brushing over the circlet's intricate vine-like design. "I am honored, Your Majesty."
"Kael," the emperor said finally, "your precision has been invaluable. This Eagle's Charm will enhance your already formidable abilities."
Kael accepted the charm, a faint smile crossing his lips. "Thank you, Your Majesty."
Maximus rose, his presence commanding the room. "Your deeds have strengthened the empire, but the battle is far from over. The demons are relentless, and we must be vigilant. I trust you will continue to serve with courage and dedication."
The team knelt once more, their voices firm as they replied in unison. "We will, Your Majesty."
As they left the palace, the sunlight felt brighter, the air lighter. The weight of the ceremony lifted slightly as the team exchanged quiet glances.
"Well," Kael said, fastening the Eagle's Charm to his belt. "That was… something."
Seraphina chuckled. "I think we all prefer the battlefield to the throne room."
Adrian remained quiet, the ceremonial sword hanging at his side. The weight of his new title felt heavier than the blade itself. A knight. He had earned it, but the responsibility that came with it loomed large.
Mohan clapped him on the shoulder. "You've earned this, Adrian. Wear it proudly."
Adrian nodded, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "I will."
