Chapter 20: Shards Of Dissonance
The whispers persisted, clawing at the edges of Arkan's mind like an invasive tide. Even as Kaelith's grip steadied him, their haunting cadence refused to relent, forming a chilling chorus of doubts and failures.
Arkan inhaled sharply, shaking his head to dispel the voices. "I know it's not real. It's just... hard to block out."
Kaelith's expression was unreadable, her lips pressed into a thin line. "The Nexus will break you if you let it. Fight it, Arkan. You're no good to anyone if you crumble here."
He clenched his fists, the shard's glow seeping through his fingers. The warmth was faint but grounding, anchoring him to the present. "I won't."
As they moved forward, the corridor twisted violently, the walls folding in on themselves like pages of a torn book. The air crackled with energy, heavy and suffused with an otherworldly hum.
Then, a new sound emerged. A steady, rhythmic pounding.
Kaelith froze mid-step, her body taut like a drawn bowstring. "Something's coming."
From the shifting shadows ahead, a figure materialized. At first, it was indistinct, its form rippling as though struggling to remain cohesive. But as it stepped into the faint light of the shard, its shape solidified—a towering construct of fractured crystal and swirling shadows. Its jagged limbs pulsed with an unstable energy, and where its face should have been, there was only a hollow void.
"A Fractured Sentinel," Kaelith murmured, her voice laced with dread.
Before Arkan could respond, the Sentinel let out a deafening roar, the sound reverberating through the collapsing Nexus. Shards of crystal erupted from its body, hurtling toward them like deadly missiles.
"Move!" Kaelith shouted, darting to the side.
Arkan barely managed to dive out of the way as the shards struck the ground where he'd been standing moments before, exploding into a cloud of jagged fragments. He rolled to his feet, his eyes narrowing as he focused on the Sentinel.
The shard in his hand pulsed in response, its energy flaring brighter. Threads of light began to weave around his fingers, their presence familiar yet still foreign. He extended his hand, the threads coalescing into a spear of luminous energy.
Kaelith was already engaging the Sentinel, her blade carving glowing arcs through the air. The Sentinel's movements were unnaturally fluid for its size, its limbs twisting and contorting to parry her strikes. Each clash sent shockwaves through the unstable corridor, the ground beneath them splintering further.
"Arkan, don't just stand there!" Kaelith shouted, her voice strained.
He didn't need to be told twice. Drawing on the shard's power, he hurled the spear of light toward the Sentinel. It struck the creature's chest, shattering a portion of its crystalline form. The Sentinel roared in pain, its body flickering as though struggling to maintain its shape.
But it wasn't enough.
The Sentinel retaliated, its massive arm swinging toward Arkan with terrifying speed. He barely had time to react, raising a hastily woven shield of light. The impact sent him flying backward, slamming into a fractured wall.
Pain flared through his body, but he forced himself to his feet, the shard's warmth rekindling his resolve. "We need to find its core," he called out, his voice hoarse.
Kaelith dodged another attack, her blade slicing through one of the Sentinel's limbs. "It's in the center! But we'll have to break through that armor first."
Arkan nodded, focusing his energy. The threads of light around him began to multiply, weaving into a more intricate pattern. He could feel the shard guiding him, its whispers blending with the rhythm of the Nexus.
Kaelith launched another assault, her strikes relentless and precise. She aimed for the cracks in the Sentinel's form, chipping away at its defenses. Arkan joined her, his woven threads lashing out like whips of pure energy. Together, their combined efforts began to take a toll on the creature.
Finally, a crack appeared in the Sentinel's chest, revealing a swirling core of unstable energy.
"Now!" Kaelith shouted, her blade glowing with a brilliant light.
Arkan poured every ounce of his energy into a final strike, the threads coalescing into a massive surge of light that struck the core dead-on. The Sentinel let out a final, earsplitting roar before collapsing in on itself, its form disintegrating into a cascade of shattered crystal and fading shadows.
The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the faint hum of the shard in Arkan's hand.
Kaelith lowered her blade, her shoulders heaving as she caught her breath. "That was too close."
Arkan nodded, his chest rising and falling as he tried to steady himself. "It's only going to get worse, isn't it?"
Kaelith didn't answer immediately. Instead, she turned her gaze toward the horizon, where the threads of the Nexus were unraveling at an alarming rate. "If we don't find a way out soon, we won't live to see what's next."
Arkan tightened his grip on the shard, its glow steady and unyielding. "Then we keep moving."
With the Sentinel defeated and the Nexus's collapse accelerating, the two pressed on, their path lit only by the shard's faint light and the unspoken determination that burned between them.
