Chapter 73: Golden Festival
4 weeks have passed since the new members joined, and they've fit in quite well. It is now the first day of September, the start of…
"Golden Festival!" Kagura bursts with more energy than usual as she runs all over the house waking everyone up. As soon as Chifuyu opens his eyes, he's also overcome with energy and starts running around with Kagura. Following them is Nicholas, then Ariel who doesn't actually understand the excitement of Golden Month yet. The fifth to come is Diego. They're all skipping in a line with their hands on the shoulders of the person in front.
Shinatsu is in her bed trying to block out the idiot's ramblings with her pillow. For some reason, they barge into her room and prance about in a circle. A pillow is swiftly hurled at Chifuyu's face.
"GET THE HELL OUT!"

Diego and Nicholas are playing a dancing game in the living room while the others are finishing up decorating the house. When they found out Chifuyu had a gaming console, they made him bring it out so they could play it. Ever since he got his PC, he stopped using the console anyway.
"Chifuyu, how long are you gonna dodge me when it comes to gaming? Did I beat you so bad back at Shoyo's that you don't wanna play against me anymore?"
"I-I don't kn-know what you're talking about. I'll have my rematch soon, just like I did with sparring."
"He's scared isn't he?"
"Absolutely."
Back when Shinatsu was tutoring Shoyo's disciples during training, she and Chifuyu had a gaming session for one night. Chifuyu had never been more traumatized before. He got violated in the games he was the best at. Dakota would be ashamed if saw that humiliation.
During Golden Month, the night skies are radiated with vibrant yellow and orange lights also decorated on buildings, trees, and what have you. The celebration stems from a folktale of old from over a millennia ago. The merrymaking didn't start until a few centuries ago when the people decided they should start celebrating it. Ever since then, every 3 years the month of September has been bustling with extravaganza. Studios make it a point to wait until this month to release their movies and TV shows when overall activity is up 100-fold. There are concerts every day, large and small. Street performances on nearly every major block. Amusement parks reach the maximum capacity before noon. Taco trucks have lines reaching 50 meters. Traffic is at its busiest in the entire year. All of Shioto is thriving. And this before the festivals even begin during the last week.
"Guys, why are we almost out of food?"
"We're also running low on toilet paper, and other home supplies…"
"How did we forget we need to grocery shopping?"
"Should we wait to go later? Or…"
"It'll be way more traffic later."
"Alright. Who wants to come?"
"I'll go."
"Thanks, Beatrice. Let's see, Chifuyu, Ariel, and Diego. You're on cleaning duty this month so you guys come too."
"Hold on, I'm about to get a perfect score."

Kagura is still the only one with a driver's license so she's stuck driving everyone for the time being, not that she minds. Their closest grocery store is about a 15-minute drive away, but it's sure to be packed so they're going to one that should be less crowded which is more out of the way. Fortunately, it was. It's still early so it just opened an hour ago, the store they went to had no more than 20 people shopping. What nobody there knew was the start of Golden Month would be a turning point for them. The 5 from Odd Jobs who went had finished getting what they needed and were in the checkout line. That's when a blaring noise was heard from outside.
"Are those police sirens?"
"You don't hear those often."
"Who's out committing crimes at this hour?"
"They'd have to be a real piece of work."
They got scarily louder by the second, everybody's curiosity led them to look at the wall even though the windows were too high to look through. Before they could process what was happening, two armored SUVs burst through the wall and front entrance blasting rubble everywhere. Out of them come 3 men, 2 of whom are instantly shot in the head by one.
"SHIT! SHIT! SHIT!"
The man who just killed his two associates with no hesitation panics, gripping at his head as if he's trying to pull his hair out and pull his skin off. He then scans the store glaring at all the civilians. They all scream, afraid for their life. The unknown man raises his arm in the air. A gunshot echoes throughout the building, causing all noise to cease.
