Chaptr 186: The Old Guild Master
I cannot tell if I have grown tired or bored of this war.
Kai turned around to see the figure of a tall woman staring at him with the eyes of a viper. She wore a long, gray robe which hid most of her body except her hands, which held two sharp daggers that sent a cold chill down his spine. She had short, dark blue hair which complimented her beautiful black eyes, though the frown on her face didn't sing any good tales for Kai.
"Who are you, little scoundrel?" She asked, brandishing her knives and blocking the door. "How dare you enter this place without my authorisation?"
"I-"
"YOU DARE TALK WITHOUT MY AUTHORISATION TOO?! THE NERVE!" She screeched like an eagle, using some mana to intimidate Kai.
But you asked me a question! He cried, trying not too cower under the woman's strong pressure. Without knowing who she was, Kai didn't want to risk getting kiled by a crazy woman. I'm guessing this is her room then… Just how strong was she to come undetected behind us… or how weak are we?! What the hell?
"Who are you?" She asked, once again brandishing her daggers. "You got five seconds before I slice your head off! Mask and all!"
Without thinking for longer than a second, Kai pulled out his guid card and threw it at the woman. She caught it with a swift motion of her hand. Her eyes glanced over it for no more than a second before she threw it back. "Well I'll be damned." She said, putting away her daggers and leaning on the door frame. "An actual adventurer in this backyard of a town. Who would have thought."
Seeing that she put away her weapons, Kai finally managed to heave a sigh of relief, and felt grateful that she remembered to retract her pressure as well. Crazy woman… He didn't dare voice his thoughts though, and waited for her to say something. However she waited for him to do the same.
Clearing his throat, Kai forced an awkard laugh alongside an apology, "I'm sorry miss I uh… didn't know someone lived here."
She raised an eyebrow after hearing, giving Kai a "Is that so?" look. The boy couldn't help but scratch the back of his head, and wanted for nothing more than for the akward moment to be over. Give me a break over here…
"I was just… looking for someone. I wanted to rest in a room and bathe and… sleep?" What else do you do in a room?
"Kid, I get that." She said, removing herself from the door and walking inside the room. "But ye can't just enter people's room like that ye know?"
"Haha… I'm sorry, curiosity got the best of me…"
A sigh escaped her lips, and she gave him a pat on the back. Kai felt a strange force crash against his back, which pushed him out of the room with an unatural easiness. "Go wait for me outside, I need to change. And close the door behind you!"
Kai quickly did as told, the feeling of the palm still lingering on his back. Is this what strong people are like? What the fuck did she just do? He shook his head and looked around, unable to see Onyx. "Hey, boy where are you?" Kai called out softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Aworf!" The howl of his companion echoed from behind the closed door, only just now realising he didn't have the time to follow him outside.
I'm sorry, Kai apologised and went to the lobby, deciding that standing in front of the door wasn't a good idea. However he didn't like the lobby either, as it was dusty and full of spiders. However he had no other option.
Luckily he didn't have to wait long, as Onyx's figure rushed through the hallway and joined him as soon as the click of the door landed in his ears. The woman followed him soon after, her gray robe replaced by old leather armor and brown pants. She strutted behind the counter with a faint smile, none of the frigthening aura from earlier surrounding her. If Kai didn't know any better, he'd guess it was another person.
"Alright then, kid." She said leisurely, as if she wasn't ready to kill him a few minutes ago. "Room for one and a pet? Alright, well since you're the only one here I guess it's free. Meal's not included, and neither are baths, we haven't had running water here since a long time."
"Uh… alright. Miss…"
"Ihme, I'm the only guild master around here, which also makes me the oldest. Don't ask about which guild, I forgot." The woman said with a smirk. Dust flew everywhere as she opened a drawer, taking out set of jingling keys.
Well that's straight to the point, isn't it? Kai chuckled inwardly and grabbed the keys from her, surprised that they were still in decent condition. "The first key is for your room on the first floor at the end of the hallway. The rest… I don't really know anymore."
"Haha," Kai blurted out in response. "Thank you, miss Ihme."
"Oh please, just call me Ihme. I haven't been a 'Miss' for a hundred years now." A light chuckle escaped her lips as she walked toward her room. "Don't break the door when you enter… seriously, don't. I don't know how old they are."

A hundred years?! Kai thought, disregarding anything else she said in his shock. She looks younger than Aina, what the fuck?!
Onyx nudged him to walk forward, not wanting to sit in the dust and cold anymore. Kai decided to stop thinking about such complicated matters and worry about wether or not his room is clean.
The stairs creaked as he climbed to the first floor, as did the wood beneath them. Pitch-black darkness encompansed the hallway, so much so that Kai had to rely on his night vision spell just to get to his room. The key clicked in place, and with a twist the lock came undone. An awful moan filled the air as Kai pushed it open, however much to his surprise the room wasn't as dirty as he had thought.
Some dust was present on a few places, but not anymore than a normal household would have. The windows were surpsingly clean and a comforting heat radiated from a crackling fireplace. All in all, Kai was surprised to find the room in such a good condition, considering the state the lobby was in.
As the door clicked shut behind him, he took off the mask and took a deep breath. Fatigue riddled his face, and he didn't care about anything except the soft bed in front of him.
He lay down facing the ceiling, staring blankly at it. His crimson eyes trembled with emotion. Finally able to process everything that's happened.
Recovering part of his memories was a huge shock. He wasn't even sure if that would actually work. However much to his surprise it did, however the gaps he still had couldn't be answered by a single fragment. He still didn't know what happaned to Nathan, why they were out so late, what happened when he got home.
Kai's heart raced though, recalling the emotions of the moment, and a longing sense of despair that still lingered. Even if the memories disappeared, the feelings didn't. He thought, bitter at having to experience such turmoil without even knowing why. Kai didn't dare to guess, however the next of his thoughts were just as somber.
Visitng Julie proved to be a waste of time, though he was happy to find out she was doing well. I really hope we can meet at the Magic Academy, however long that takes. She's probably going to be my senior by a few years… The thoguht made him curious about how old she was, as it was so long ago he had asked that he'd forgotten.
Besides Julie's place, visiting his parents' graves made him shake. His soul, mind and body felt disgusted at who he was and what he did until now. More than a year had passed and I'm not any closer to Haniard. It feels like I wasted so much time by going nowhere and I'm back where I started. I can't be content with mediocrity anymore… I'll grab the pieces of my soul, get stronger, join the Magic Academy and learn magic properly… then. His eyes floated toward the location of the Vampire Kingdom, where Haniard sat on his throne without a care in the world. Then I'll have my payback.
He didn't even think about the camp and what could have happened to his grandpa. Kai only wished that everyone got away safely and that they managed to find another place to live in. If not…
Kai turned on his side, meeting Onyx's snout, who lay next to him. The Obborik licked his face, the stinky smell lingering with the salive. He smiled softly and grabbed him, pulling him closer and wiping his face on the soft fur.
"You really stink." His muffled voice caused small vibrations on Onyx's chest, but Kai didn't let go, and the Obborik could only fall asleep like that.
…
The sun rose early the next morning, as did Kai, whose clothes were coverd in Obborik fur. His eyes struggled to open as he forced his body to raise. Wiping his face and slapping himself a couple of times, he stood up, gathering his footing and explored the room. The fire had died during hte night but the heat it generated still remained.
With the sun rising and casting its ray through the window, the room it up, revealing its actual disorder. Even though there wasn't a lot of dust, the furniture was clearly misplaced, as was the bed, and the sheets - if one could even call them that - were anything but well made.
At least it was comfortable enough, he thought, clearing out some space in the middle of the room. He dropped a couple fire crystals on the floor, alongside four actual rocks placing them equally apart, a small wooden bathub appeared out of thin air, which Kai then filled with water. The fire crystals at the bottom heated up the water just enough for it to be comfortable, and he threw himself inside after half an hour.
Regretfully he couldn't stay long, as the morning would quickly pass and he was determined to head to Nivero after. The drying process was quick, literally blasting himself with warm air he created using fire and wind spells. However what came next made him worry a little.
"Alright, now you have to get in as well." Kai said, taking out the dirty water and replacing it with freshly conjured one. "You're dirty and you stink."
"Awaaraaa" Onyx complained, shaking his head and running around the room.
"Come here, you stink!"
"Awwaa…."
"Onyx!"
…
Finally, after what felt like ages, the two exited the room. Kai's expression behind the mask looking even more exhausted than the night before. Onyx was similarly unhappy, though his fur was obviously cleaner. The wooden floor and stairs creaked just the same on the descent than they did when they climbed them, yet Kai was met with complete silence at the lobby.
He wasn't sure if Ihme was still there of if she had left, but he didn't want to stay in such a place for a second longer. The entire town put him off somewhat, and the fact that its residents threw out a young girl and her mother disgusted him even more.
Dropping the keys on the counter, he turned to leave, and much to his surpise, nobody stopped him. Not that he wanted to be stopped, but that would be the logical outcome. Better this way, I guess.
Kai wandered the almost empty streets, a thick layer of fog coating the already unusable roads. It wasn't that bothersome, but it made it difficult to see what you were stepping on. Thankfully most of it was mud, so that didn't bother Kai too much. It bothered Onyx, though, who had spent time in a bath only to get his fur dirty again.
Kai felt guilty about it, but he promised Onyx he would cook him a large amount of meat, so it wasn't that bad.
Making his way through the fog, Kai said his goodbyes to the guards and headed off into the forest. His destination, Nivero.
A woman watched him from within the city, though, her crimson eyes locking onto his departing figure. "So that's how you've been hiding. Little fool, you think a simple mask can stop me from figuring you out?"
