Chapter 7: Section 7 Spirit Envoy
"It's one thing to do such conscience-losing things in broad daylight, but do you have to do it here? Do you know where we are?"
Wang Yu walked up to them while speaking and glanced at them briefly before pointing at a burly man and saying, "You come and answer the question I just asked."
The big man he pointed at was stunned for a moment, looked at the others, and then said, "Graveyard."
"GOODBOY! Correct answer, plus one point, let's give him a round of applause for his splendid answer," Wang Yu said with a smile and clapped his hands.
Feeling flattered by the praise, the big man grinned sheepishly, scratching his head, but when he noticed Crippled Wolf's murderous gaze, he suddenly snapped out of it, lifting the machete in his hand towards Wang Yu.
Wang Yu paid no attention to his gesture and said to himself, "Graveyards are solemn places, by doing this here, you are disrespecting the dead, and for that, you should be punished, understand?"
The sudden appearance of Wang Yu filled Lin Xi with hope, her eyes brightened and looked at Wang Yu with anticipation, wishing he could wake her from this nightmare and rescue her from the clutches of this evil.
Everyone stared dumbfounded at Wang Yu, their eyes filled with confusion, not understanding where this beast had appeared from, just quietly showing up before them like a ghost.
Thinking of ghosts, some of them swallowed hard as they looked at Wang Yu, then scanned the surroundings, only to see grave markers everywhere, which made them feel a chill rise up from their feet, involuntarily shivering.
"Who's this scrap collector who's turned up? Scram, or I'll mess you up."
After sizing up Wang Yu for a while, Crippled Wolf finally spoke. Wang Yu, in his washed out camo clothing and canvas shoes, with one pant leg rolled up, did indeed look like a scrap collector.
Wang Yu instantly felt a bit frustrated. On the plane, the hijacker said he was a migrant worker, Hu Liang called him a beggar, and now Crippled Wolf was calling him a scrap collector—what exactly am I? Damn it, it's making me dizzy.
But then again, Wang Yu felt that Crippled Wolf wasn't entirely wrong; he really was a collector of sorts, though not of scrap, but of the lives of scum.
"I've said it before, you're going to be punished, and I am the one sent by the spirits to do just that."
After Wang Yu finished speaking, the smile on his lips faded in an instant, and the murderous intent in his eyes suddenly overwhelmed everything. The air around seemed to drop to freezing point, making everyone tremble involuntarily.
"Leave that girl alone within three seconds," Wang Yu said coldly to Crippled Wolf, then lowered his head and started the countdown in his mind.
After three seconds, the front of the graveyard flickered with movement. The two men holding Lin Xi suddenly felt pain in their chests, then collapsed, their fate unknown. The remaining Crippled Wolf stood there pale, his legs trembling uncontrollably.
Everything happened so fast, no one saw how Wang Yu had moved; they only felt a blur before their eyes, and then he was beside Lin Xi, with two of his accomplices lying on the ground.
"I said three seconds," Wang Yu stated coldly and threw his jacket to Lin Xi.
Lin Xi quickly picked up the jacket, draped it over her shoulders, and hurriedly pulled on her skirt, standing by Wang Yu's side, her delicate body still trembling.
The scene fell silent, so quiet that even the drop of a needle could be heard. Everyone stared dumbly at Wang Yu, feeling a deep fear from within their souls.
They finally believed what Wang Yu had said, that this being, human or ghost, was indeed a harbinger of death sent by the spirits.
"You have five seconds to carry these two pieces of trash and get out," Wang Yu said coldly.
Having learned from what happened earlier, this time four people immediately rushed over, picked up their fallen comrades, and ran down the hill under Crippled Wolf's lead, a few stumbling from fright along the way.
The two who had fallen were just unconscious; Wang Yu hadn't killed them. As a hitman, his hands were already steeped in blood, and moreover, this was the Yan Kingdom. The law was different here, and he didn't want to invite trouble.
Turning to look at Lin Xi, Wang Yu smiled slightly and asked, "Are you alright?"
Lin Xi looked up at Wang Yu, nodded her head after tidying her bangs with her hand, and said softly, "Thank you for saving me."
Her face was pale, with a trace of blood at the corner of her mouth and five bright red fingermarks still starkly visible on one cheek, sparking a sense of compassion in Wang Yu.
"No need to thank me, it's what I should do," Wang Yu replied, then took out a cigarette, lit it, and after taking a deep puff said, "Your name is Lin Xi, right?"
Lin Xi was slightly startled and looked at Wang Yu in surprise, not understanding how he knew her name.
Wang Yu's mouth curled up in a smile, but of course, he wouldn't tell her that he had arrived early and had been watching the scene unfold until now; that would make him seem shameless.
"Don't be surprised, I know a bit of divination. Just now, I did a little calculation and knew something was happening here, so I hurried over, and knowing your name is not so strange."
Wang Yu's explanation was so vivid he could've passed for a fortune-teller. Lin Xi watched him with a smile on her lips, a mix of belief and skepticism in her eyes.
To increase his credibility, Wang Yu finished speaking and looked up at the sky, pinched up an orchid finger, and chanted under his breath. Suddenly he slapped his thigh and exclaimed loudly, "Not good, I've just calculated that you're still in danger. Is there a man by your side named Hu Liang?"
Lin Xi burst into laughter all of a sudden and said to Wang Yu, "Keep bragging, wasn't that you I saw at the foot of the mountain just now? I suppose you've been hiding nearby all along, right?"
Wang Yu's forehead was instantly streaked with black lines as he silently rebuked himself for forgetting that she had seen him at the foot of the mountain just now, how embarrassing! But he had to admit, Lin Xi was a very clever girl.
"Alright, I admit it, but I still have to remind you to be more cautious around that Hu Liang," Wang Yu said slowly, feeling that this reminder was very necessary. He did not want to see a girl blinded and her life ruined by deceit.
In fact, Lin Xi had also begun to suspect that Hu Liang's urging for her to go down the mountain had ulterior motives. Moreover, if Hu Liang really cared so much about her, how could he possibly abandon her to escape alone?
However, Lin Xi did not dare to be certain of her thoughts just yet, she needed to consider them carefully before making a final decision.
"Thanks for the warning, I will," Lin Xi said to Wang Yu with a grateful smile, two cute dimples appearing on her cheeks.
Wang Yu smiled back at her and nodded, thinking that such a clever girl would not be easily deceived forever. Perhaps he was a bit too worried after all.
"That's good then," Wang Yu said before flicking away the cigarette butt and turning to leave.
"Sir," Lin Xi called out as she saw him leaving, raising her voice a notch.
Wang Yu turned to look at her and asked, "Is there something else? If not, you better get home quickly, I need to leave too."
Lin Xi glanced around and said in a low voice with her head down, "Sir, if you're not too busy, could you please give me a ride home?"
Wang Yu paused and blinked several times as he looked at her. Of course, he didn't think she was suggesting something else; he guessed she had been frightened by the recent events and was scared of the possibility that Crippled Wolf was still nearby, afraid to go down the mountain alone. Well, might as well carry through with the good deed to the end.
"Sure, but you'd better be careful. I'm not exactly a gentleman, and who knows what could happen... heh, you understand," he said with a mischievous smile, glancing over her chest where her pink bra with lace edges was faintly visible beneath her unbuttoned coat, sparking endless fantasies.
Hearing this, Lin Xi frowned slightly and examined Wang Yu seriously for a moment. After biting her silver teeth, she made a decision. Judging from the fact that he had stepped in to save her just now, she decided he wasn't a bad guy. Even if he did "that" to her, she'd accept it; it was certainly better than falling prey to the beasts that were Crippled Wolf and his gang.
"I'm not afraid, I trust you," Lin Xi said, and then led the way down the mountain.
Wang Yu scoffed and followed her. He certainly wouldn't do "that," and even if he had thought about it, Lin Xi's words "I trust you" completely extinguished that notion. How could one betray someone's trust?
The two walked out of the cemetery and Wang Yu was pleasantly surprised to find that the black Buick was still parked in the same spot. Without asking Lin Xi if she had the keys, he excitedly went forward, punched the car window, shattering the glass, opened the car door, crawled in to pull out the wires, and started the ignition.
Car theft was second nature to Wang Yu; it was just one of the many essential skills of an assassin, and the least technically demanding one.
"Get in." After starting the car, Wang Yu shook his head coolly, expecting to revel in Lin Xi's admiring gaze. But instead, he found her holding a set of keys, staring blankly at him.
"Uh... well... get in," he said, sweating profusely as he realized she had the keys but he had smashed her car window. But in his defense, why didn't the girl take out the keys sooner if she had them? Wasn't she just making him look foolish on purpose?
Lin Xi blinked a few times without a word, went around to the passenger side, and got in. After all, the car belonged to that turtle Hu Liang; she didn't mind at all that it was damaged.
"Sunshine City Garden District on Seaside Road."
After Lin Xi stated the destination, she leaned back in the car seat, her long eyelashes trembling slightly as she quietly watched ahead. Wang Yu knew she had slipped into a contemplative world.
The Buick slowly left the graveyard and headed for Sunshine City Garden. This was a residential area which had existed for eight years, so Wang Yu knew it well.
During the drive, Lin Xi slowly closed her eyes, and her head, moving with the bumpy ride, gradually rested on Wang Yu's shoulder, her hair's sweet fragrance immediately invaded his nostrils.
An hour and five minutes later, the Buick finally stopped in front of Sunshine City Garden District. Wang Yu glanced out the window. Although the district's name was the same, the entire complex looked brand new, not like what it was eight years ago, probably renovated.
Lin Xi was still sound asleep, and Wang Yu didn't have the heart to wake her. He looked down at her delicate features and couldn't help but become lost in thought.
In her sleep, Lin Xi's brows furrowed slightly, her long eyelashes occasionally trembling, tears on the corners of her eyes; her mouth slightly open, breathing out fragrance like orchids; her smooth hair casually spread out behind her, her face no longer swollen, but the imprint of five fingers still visible.
Lin Xi appeared so fragile that Wang Yu was reminded of Xiao Xue. Suddenly, a strong desire to protect her surged in his heart.
