Urban Soldier Young Master

Chapter 28: Must Make More Effort

When passing by a mall, Chu Ge bought a shirt identical to the one he had before, changed into it, and then drove back to the Qin Family. He spoke to Qin Ruoying and hoped that she wouldn't mention his burn on the back when she got home.

In Chu Ge's view, this small burn was no big deal. Once it's over, it's over. Making a fuss about it would truly be quite boring.

On the surface, Qin Ruoying seemed to revert to her playful and quirky self after returning home, but only she knew the matters within her own heart.

That day was a joyous day for the Qin Family because Qin Yan's promotion to the position of captain of the criminal police team was finally a done deal.

That day was also the last day of Chu Ge and Qin Ruojing's visit this time.

That evening, Qin's mother insisted that Chu Ge stay out of the kitchen and personally made a table full of her signature dishes, expressing her complete acceptance of Chu Ge as her son-in-law in this way.

If it weren't for Chu Ge, Qin Yan might have remained just a police officer until retirement. What reason did Qin's mother have to be dissatisfied with Chu Ge?

Qin Yan happily clinked glasses with Chu Ge repeatedly, getting thoroughly drunk. It had been years since he felt this open-hearted. In the end, he simply sat next to Chu Ge, patting him on the shoulder, and began to spill out whatever came to mind with a slurred tongue.

"Xiao Chu, you... you and our little Jing... must put in more effort. Your old couple here are waiting to have grandchildren, understand?"

The Qin house rules were very strict, even somewhat old-fashioned. Before everyone finished eating, no one was allowed to leave the table. So even though others had long finished their meals, they still sat there. Upon hearing Qin Yan say such things, Qin's mother was greatly surprised and couldn't believe these words actually came from Qin Yan.

Qin Ruojing didn't quite understand the meaning of these words, but seeing the expression on her father's face, she realized her father could actually smile so mischievously, making her feel truly frustrated inside.

The same words sounded in Qin Ruoying's ears, causing a glimmer of bitterness in her eyes. However, since everyone's attention was on Chu Ge and Qin Yan, no one noticed the fleeting unusual emotion in her eyes.

Even though Chu Ge thought his skin was thick enough, hearing Qin Yan's words still made him feel a bit awkward. He chuckled dryly and replied with a couple of perfunctory "Uh-huh"s.

"Xiao Chu, don't... don't give me those uh-huhs. A real man should act like a real man! Tell me loudly, do you understand or not, and can you complete the task?"

Qin Yan was truly drunk. Seeing Chu Ge being vague, he immediately straightened his face, slammed the table, and said very unhappily.

"Understood! I guarantee to complete the task!"

There is no reasoning with a drunk person, and although Chu Ge was helpless, he could only agree loudly in deference to Qin Yan's words.

"That's... that's more like it, haha. Remember, you two must put in more effort, and tonight, just more... more..."

Halfway through his sentence, Qin Yan's eyelids drooped, and his head nodded down as he suddenly collapsed onto the table, snoring loudly.

Seeing that Qin Yan finally fell asleep, Chu Ge breathed a sigh of relief. If they had continued chatting any longer, who knows what more absurd things his "father-in-law" might have said.

Helping Qin's mother move Qin Yan back to the bed in the bedroom, Chu Ge was about to leave when Qin's mother spoke up, "Xiao Chu, wait a minute."

After she finished speaking, Qin's mother turned around, took out a bulging red envelope from a drawer, stuffed it into Chu Ge's hand, and smiled sincerely and satisfactorily, "Xiao Chu, this is ten thousand and one yuan, meaning you are the best son-in-law of the Qin Family, take it."

Chu Ge did not refuse the money and took it with both hands, saying "Thank you, Auntie."

This represented the couple's recognition of him and also signified the successful completion of his mission this time.

"Auntie, I'll go back to the room to rest. If there's anything uncle needs tonight, just call me."

"Don't worry, I can handle it by myself, plus you have your own things to deal with. Don't forget the task your uncle assigned to you."

Faced with Qin's mother's somewhat teasing gaze, Chu Ge could only respond with two dry laughs, say "Good night, Auntie," and then shut the door.

The night grew darker, and thick clouds gradually covered the entire sky.

When Qin Ruojing finished washing up and returned to the room, it was time to figure out how to sleep that night.

Seemingly remembering last night's awkward situation, after locking the door, Qin Ruojing immediately spoke as soon as she met Chu Ge's gaze, "Today, you continue sleeping on the bed, I'll sleep on the floor."

"No need, you sleep on the bed, and I'll take the floor."

As he spoke, Chu Ge pulled out bedding from the cabinet and began to spread it on the floor.

"Hmm? Why are you so agreeable today?" Qin Ruojing originally wanted to ask how Chu Ge's back was, but the words changed as they came out.

While tidying the bedding, Chu Ge casually said without looking up, "We're heading back to Lido tomorrow. You better gather your energy since you've been away from the company for days. There'll surely be a pile of things to handle, and it's not good if something goes wrong."

Such a casual remark actually touched Qin Ruojing, but she replied with a teasing tone, "You say it so nicely, like it's true. You're just worried I'll delay your pay, and you're trying to please me on the last night, right?"

Chu Ge raised his head in mock surprise, "Oh? You saw through it? President Qin truly lives up to her reputation for achieving great things, with discerning eyes, insight into hearts, and sharp judgment. No mere mortal like me could aspire to that level!"

Seeing Chu Ge's exaggerated manner, Qin Ruojing couldn't help but smile and gave him a sidelong glance, "Flattering me, huh? That's not flattering; that's blatant sycophancy. Besides, your flattery sounds awful. What discerning eyes? You're the Great Sage Equal to Heaven with a body covered in monkey fur!"

Even though this wasn't the first time Chu Ge saw Qin Ruojing smile, he never tired of it. Plus, the way she looked at him with that sidelong glance and tone was full of the playfulness between lovers.

Chu Ge wasn't sleepy anyway, and seeing that the atmosphere and Qin Ruojing's mood were good, he decided to tease her a bit more, sighing, "Ah! If only I had the skills of the Great Sage Equal to Heaven! But speaking of him, I almost feel sorry for him."

Seeing Chu Ge's exaggeratedly pained expression, Qin Ruojing instinctively asked, "Feel sorry for him? He's the esteemed Victorious Fighting Buddha. What is there to feel sorry about?"

Chu Ge chuckled, putting on an air of seriousness, "Think about it, if you were a man with X-ray Vision, Wall-Penetrating Skill, Invisibility Technique, Body Fixing Technique, and Seventy-Two Transformations—all skills men dream of having—would you become a monk?"

Qin Ruojing burst into laughter but quickly curbed it, giving Chu Ge another playful glare, "You, I've never mistaken you—you are truly a scoundrel!"

"How am I a scoundrel again? Is your mind impure? I just said he shouldn't have become a monk; I didn't say anything more!"

"You're a scoundrel, end of story. Turn off the light and go to sleep."

Qin Ruojing finally realized that Chu Ge was just leading her around, laying traps for her to fall into, so she held back her amusement and annoyance, deciding not to continue the conversation.

As Chu Ge was about to turn off the light, he suddenly remembered the red envelope and took it out from his pocket, tossing it to Qin Ruojing.

"What's this?" Qin Ruojing caught the red envelope and asked, confused.

"Your mom just gave it to me; she said it's ten thousand and one yuan as a son-in-law recognition gift." With that, Chu Ge turned off the light and lay down on the bedding.

In the darkness, holding the bulging red envelope, Qin Ruojing hesitated a bit.

"Since it's from my mom, you should keep it. It shows that you've done a good job on the task, and this money can be your bonus. The twenty thousand I promised as your fee will be paid in full tomorrow, not a penny less."

After a moment's hesitation, Qin Ruojing tossed the envelope back to Chu Ge's pillow, her face slightly flushed, but fortunately, the lights were off, so she wasn't worried about Chu Ge seeing it.

"If you say so, then I won't be polite with you. Thanks, goodnight."

Knowing Qin Ruojing wasn't short of money, Chu Ge didn't pretend otherwise. He put the red envelope back, closed his eyes, and prepared to sleep.

Meanwhile, when Qin Ruojing tossed the envelope, she noticed Chu Ge still lying on the floor. The image of him being scalded by hot oil yesterday flashed through her mind, filling her with a sense of pity.

Last night, Qin Ruojing had slept on the floor and felt exhausted all day, with a sore back and discomfort all over.

In her view, if she found it hard to turn over comfortably, it must be worse for Chu Ge on the floor, certainly more torturous than her last night.

Moreover, Chu Ge got scalded while protecting her sister, which heightened Qin Ruojing's guilt towards him.

Maybe... let him sleep in bed, and she could sleep on the floor for the night?

Remembering how uncomfortable it was on the floor last night, Qin Ruojing quickly dismissed the idea.

But letting Chu Ge sleep on the floor felt wrong to her.

Even though she hired Chu Ge to play a role with compensation, he came such a long way to perform the role so well, handled things around the house, cooked so many meals, and even helped her dad get a promotion.

Weighing it all, the twenty thousand yuan she promised Chu Ge seemed inadequate compared to what Chu Ge had done for the Qin Family—that it was the Qin Family who owed Chu Ge.

After much thought, Qin Ruojing took a deep breath, making a difficult decision in her heart.
