Chapter 960: Where Is He, Really?
In the mountain forest at night, two figures swiftly emerged from the bushes, only to disappear like phantoms into another dark corner. They didn't even check if there was any danger there and just dove in without hesitation. Just as the two figures entered the dark corner, three more figures followed closely behind.
"Damn it! We can't shake them off," Xiao Ruo cursed under his breath, his footsteps relentless as he followed Long Feiyun.
"They're experts." Long Feiyun took a moment to glance upward, seeing only an expanse of darkness. However, his instincts told him dawn was approaching. If they couldn't shake off their pursuers before daybreak, the two of them would be in big trouble.
"What should we do?" Xiao Ruo could clearly feel their pursuers closing in. He sensed the pressure mounting from those behind, knowing that the attackers from earlier in the day were among them.
Long Feiyun didn't answer Xiao Ruo but continued to analyze their surroundings carefully, leading Xiao Ruo into one dark corner after another, trying to outmaneuver their pursuers. Sweat began to bead on his forehead, and even his limbs were starting to feel weak. They hadn't eaten all day, and coupled with being in a heightened state of tension, he was reaching his limit.
Xiao Ruo wasn't in any better shape, having expended more energy than Long Feiyun. Now relentlessly pursued, he was on the brink of collapse. If not for his stubborn nature, he might have already collapsed, unable to move.
The sky outside the forest was turning pale, birds chirping crisply amidst the trees. A ray of sunlight pierced through the dense branches of the forest. With a swish, Long Feiyun parted the foliage ahead and slipped through, followed closely by Xiao Ruo. Upon seeing the sunlight, Long Feiyun's mood sank. If it were nighttime, they could use the environment to hide, but now that it was daylight, no matter how dense the forest, it was much brighter than at night, making it much harder for the two of them to avoid their pursuers.
"It's daylight. Damn it." Xiao Ruo wiped the moisture from his face, whether it was sweat or dew, stopped in his tracks, and said to Long Feiyun, "We can't run anymore; they've already caught up."
Upon hearing this, Long Feiyun also stopped, stood upright, and looked back. His gaze was calm, without a trace of panic. He had been fleeing all night, and with their pursuers catching up, there was no longer any point in running. He steadied his breathing and Qi, which was slightly chaotic from a night of fleeing, a state that had drained much of his energy and Qi.
Xiao Ruo stared straight ahead, eyes fixed, though he saw no one. He could clearly sense the air flow within a twenty-meter radius suddenly shift and then settle again. Such profound concealment skills, even able to mask the Qi emanating from oneself. Xiao Ruo silently praised. Having steadied his Qi, he now had less than two-thirds of it left. Carefully discerning the direction of the previous disturbance, Xiao Ruo approximately judged the hiding place of their pursuers, though he couldn't be sure if they had moved. He slowly gathered his Qi, waiting for the moment to strike.
Qinghong looked confusedly at Xiao Ruo and Long Feiyun, who had suddenly stopped. He didn't understand why they ceased running, so at a distance of twenty meters from them, he found a place to hide. Following his lead, Bai Hao and Yan Shuang also took cover. The three men watched the two figures in front of them stand tall and motionless in the forest.
"Why aren't they running?" Yan Shuang whispered.
"I don't know." Qinghong couldn't guess the intentions of Xiao Ruo and Long Feiyun.
"Could they be planning to fight us?" Bai Hao suggested a possibility. He had guessed correctly.
Qinghong didn't reply to Bai Hao, as he noticed Xiao Ruo's gaze had fallen on his hiding place. Could he have discovered us? Qinghong speculated privately. But shortly after, he saw Xiao Ruo look away. He quickly dismissed his far-fetched notion. He knew that Qinghong's stealth techniques had reached a level of consummate skill; discovering him was no easy feat. Nevertheless, he continued to wonder what those two might do next.
"Feiyun, I know where they are. I'll distract them, and you prepare to ambush." After speaking, Xiao Ruo revealed the direction of their pursuers to Long Feiyun.
Long Feiyun nodded silently, gathering his strength, his body slightly crouched, ready to spring into action as soon as Xiao Ruo gave the signal. Xiao Ruo drew his dagger, and with a swipe of his left hand across the blade, a streak of red light burst forth, transforming into a red Light Sword. It was a technique Xiao Ruo had developed himself, using his Qi through the dagger to form a longsword. This longsword had incredible destructive power and carried fiery venom.
The moment Xiao Ruo's red longsword appeared, Long Feiyun vanished swiftly from sight, having already planned the route and timing, the shortest and least noticeable path. As Long Feiyun disappeared, Xiao Ruo roared, brandishing his longsword, and charged towards where Qinghong and the others were hiding. He moved swiftly, covering the twenty-meter distance in just three breaths' time.
Their sudden attack took Qinghong and his companions by surprise; they hadn't anticipated such an abrupt move. In that moment of hesitation, Xiao Ruo arrived. Bai Hao reacted the fastest, lunging forward as Xiao Ruo approached, with a longsword appearing from nowhere to block Xiao Ruo's furious strike.
With a boom, Xiao Ruo's red longsword clashed with Bai Hao's, suddenly spewing a jet of fire towards Bai Hao's face. Taken by surprise, Bai Hao hadn't expected such a peculiar trait from Xiao Ruo's longsword. As the flames approached, Bai Hao felt an intense heat wave and remembered he was in battle. He instantly increased the strength in his hand, deflecting Xiao Ruo's sword, and quickly retreated. As Bai Hao retreated, Xiao Ruo pursued relentlessly.
Not intending to give Bai Hao any respite, Xiao Ruo slashed with his red longsword at Bai Hao. The sound of clashing sword echoed through the forest. After trading nearly a hundred moves, Yan Shuang finally remembered to help Bai Hao, hurriedly jumping down from the tree. As soon as Yan Shuang moved, Long Feiyun, who had been lurking nearby, made his move.
Early on, when Xiao Ruo and Bai Hao first clashed, Long Feiyun had already positioned himself behind Qinghong's group. It was all thanks to Xiao Ruo distracting them that Long Feiyun's movements went unnoticed. Once Long Feiyun was fully concealed, it became difficult for others to spot him amidst the chaos.
Seeing Yan Shuang leap down from the tree, Long Feiyun flicked his hand, releasing several dark streaks. These streaks moved with incredible speed, emitting only a faint sound upon release before becoming extremely silent. Always hidden in the tree, Qinghong heard the faint sound, and as he turned his gaze towards it, the dark streaks were already behind Yan Shuang.
"Look out!" Qinghong shouted, hurling several dark streaks of his own. But he was a step too slow.
Yan Shuang had heard Qinghong's warning, but in mid-air, it was hard to suddenly change position. Swiftly, she extended her left hand behind her, and with a poof, a stream of fire burst from her palm. But it was of no avail; the dark streaks sent by Long Feiyun hit accurately on her back. The power of the dark streaks was immense, along with containing Long Feiyun's bizarre Qi.
Attacked abruptly, Yan Shuang was sent flying. Leveraging the force of the attack, her body twisted mid-air, dissipating some of the impact. Despite this, she still spat out a mouthful of blood. As soon as Yan Shuang hit the ground, she charged towards Long Feiyun's hiding spot, only to find no trace of him upon arrival. Frustrated, she roared, flames bursting forth from her body, making her appear like a Fire God with her red clothes blazing.
"He's there." Qinghong indicated the spot where Long Feiyun was hiding to Yan Shuang.
