Chapter 849: Sure Enough, It's Not Simple
Just as Zhu Bufan was erasing traces, snowflakes suddenly fluttered down from the sky.
"Ha-ha, truly Heaven helps me too!" Zhu Bufan cheered and swiftly returned along the way he had come.
By the time Zhu Bufan got back to the courtyard, the ground was covered with half a foot deep of snow.
"Hehe, it seems unlikely anyone would suspect me."
After securing the courtyard gate, Zhu Bufan returned to his room.
He immediately changed into a new set of clothes, cutting the blood-stained and tattered old clothes into pieces and throwing them into the furnace; he then cleaned himself up thoroughly so that there was no sign of him having gone out, and finally sat back down on the bed.
Zhu Bufan took a deep breath and opened a package next to him, preparing to sort out his gains from this outing.
"So wealthy!"
As he went through the package, Zhu Bufan couldn't help but exclaim.
The package contained mostly gold notes and silver notes. Zhu Bufan roughly estimated, totaling over a million taels of silver.
However, considering it – Huo Hu and the Bloodthirsty Scholar being leaders of the Thunder Tiger Mercenary Group, their personal worth was undoubtedly exceptional – this million taels of silver was probably just what they carried on them; as for the amount in their treasury, who knows how much money was there?
Although there was a lot of money, Zhu Bufan was not really concerned about it; what he cared about were the four old-looking booklets.
Picking up the first one, it had "Fiery Fire Technique" written in bold, clearly indicating it was Huo Hu's cultivation method. Zhu Bufan casually flipped through it and discovered, to his surprise, that the booklet recorded the Fiery Fire Technique from the First Layer to the Tenth Layer in detail, and even included a movement technique called Blast Flame Step at the end. Evidently, this was a top-level cultivation method, highly valuable. Sadly, it clashed with the Water Element Cultivation Method Zhu Bufan practiced, but Zhu Bufan was still very pleased, as even though the Blast Flame Step required Fire Element Inner Qi to activate, he could still learn from it.
The next booklet was the Soft Water Technique. It was clearly the cultivation method practiced by the Bloodthirsty Scholar, documenting up to the postnatal ninth layer. It contained notes from three different individuals, obviously copied by three different hands.
Then came the thickest of them all, the cover of which was pitch black, with two striking red characters on it: "Poison Scripture."
Zhu Bufan quickly flipped through and discovered that the content of the Poison Scripture was extensive, detailing not only poisonous herbs and creatures but also some animals and plants with unique functions, uses, appearances, all clearly recorded; even vivid illustrations were included. What followed were various poison formulations and poisoning methods, and finally, antidotes.
Zhu Bufan, looking indifferent, put down the Poison Scripture, but his heart was exceedingly thrilled. With this Poison Scripture, even if he was only a First Rank Martial Artist, he now had the confidence to instil fear in everyone.
Picking up the last book, Zhu Bufan became even more expectant.
After flipping through the last booklet for a while, Zhu Bufan's expression turned intriguing.
This last booklet was unnamed, and similarly documented an Inner Qi cultivation spell, but this nameless method was extremely perilous, requiring the consumption of various poisons, especially when breaking through bottlenecks where deadly poisons were needed to aid the breakthrough and extract one's hidden potential.
"Hell, isn't this suicide? With so many toxins, who could control them? Even an Innate expert might not be capable, right?" After reading this, Zhu Bufan frowned deeply, his face marked with an expression of disbelief.
Although Zhu Bufan's own strengths were not outstanding, being a descendant of a prestigious family, his judgment was unparalleled; although this method was indeed innovative, making Zhu Bufan's eyes light up, both in theory and practice, it was impossible to achieve.
But the strength of the Poison Demon was something Zhu Bufan had witnessed with his own eyes; he was indeed a Tenth Rank powerhouse.
"What has he cultivated to reach this level?" Zhu Bufan's heart was filled with perplexity.
In the midst of his thoughts, he had reached the last page of the cultivation method.
"Eh, that's not right!"
The last page wasn't about cultivation techniques, but more like a diary, recording some important events in the life of the Poison Demon. However, Zhu Bufan only skimmed over these, drawn instead to the texture of the paper.
As he gently touched the paper, although there was no difference in color or size from the previous pages, Zhu Bufan was certain that the texture of this paper was definitely not the same as the earlier ones.
This piece of paper felt much rougher than the earlier pages, as if a layer of an unknown substance had been brushed on top of the previous pages.
Zhu Bufan tugged slightly and tore the page from the booklet.
He then filled a wooden basin with water and submerged the torn page into it.
As soon as the paper touched the water, Zhu Bufan was sure there was definitely something unusual about it.
Like a piece of iron entering water, it sank quickly without floating for a bit, sinking to the bottom of the basin in the blink of an eye.
The phenomenon Zhu Bufan was hoping for did not happen; nothing dissolved from the paper into the water.
Seeing no expected changes, Zhu Bufan wasn't in a hurry. He took a pair of chopsticks and, holding the corner of the paper, swiftly stirred it in the water.
As expected, changes began to occur.
Strands of thick yellow liquid started separating from the paper, forming large and small fragments. As time passed, the speed of separation naturally increased. Gradually, the earthy-yellow surface disappeared, and through the slightly murky water, a hint of silver-white could be faintly seen.
Thinking it was about time, with the coating almost completely fallen off, Zhu Bufan took it out.
He carefully dried it with a cloth, revealing a perfectly square, silver-white thin sheet to his eyes.
The thin sheet was silky smooth with a metallic texture. It was covered densely with a type of dark green font, every stroke and character extremely clear. It didn't become blurry from the immersion nor did it dissolve into the water and disappear.
Looking at the bizarre and mysterious characters, Zhu Bufan frowned deeply. Although he couldn't understand a single character, he felt a sense of déjà vu deep in his heart.
"This seems to be... Ancient Chief Language!"
Over the years, Zhu Bufan had perused numerous books and had also come across introductions to the Ancient Chief Language. He knew that this script was handed down from ancient times and was now rare, though which race created it, he wasn't sure, and of course, he couldn't understand its meaning.
Luckily, the Ancient Chief Language is one among a few ancient scripts that has translations available. Even so, collections that can translate Ancient Chief Language are not found just anywhere. As far as Zhu Bufan knew, in the vast Nanli City, not a single power had the capability to possess such collections. The Zhu Family certainly had, but it would only be treasured within the clan, and not in a minor place like Nanli City.
To understand the meaning written on the silver sheet was not something Zhu Bufan could achieve now. Since he couldn't decipher its meaning, Zhu Bufan didn't trouble himself further, but his instincts told him that this silver sheet inscribed with Ancient Chief Language was certainly extraordinary.
