Chapter 1008: Finally About to Succeed

The strange atmosphere echoed among the six people.

The night was so dark it was terrifying, a darkness where you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, always inducing a sense of fear. The Purple Moon in the sky had been swallowed by the thick clouds at some unknown time. The wind whistled through the gaps in the trees, making a stranger, more chilling sound. In the remote mountain depths, towering peaks formed a circular valley, and right in the middle of this valley was another small hill. Compared to the sky-piercing mountains around it, this hill could only be considered a small mound, but the originally inconspicuous hill was now filled with people standing on it.

Under the slightly dim light, a group of men were panting as they dug into the soil at the top of the hill. The ground here was surprisingly firm, making them exert almost all their strength with each shovelful to cut through the tough soil, only to then throw the earth out of the large pit.

The diggers couldn't understand why the boss didn't allow the use of more convenient tools like explosives. For a small hill like this, as long as the explosives were properly placed, a single loud blast could turn the hill into dust, saving the time and effort being wasted here. However, the workers knew that since even mechanical excavation was completely rejected, explosives were out of the question. Yet they couldn't understand why a place with no traces of human activity might hide some world-class treasure.

Despite their thoughts, the workers' movements didn't slow down. After all, their boss was standing right next to them, watching. They didn't want to risk angering the boss and having their due pay docked unexpectedly.

As the pit grew deeper, the workers' stamina was nearing its limit. But so far, they hadn't uncovered anything. The soil here was as hard as rock, causing their arms to go numb with digging. But they did not stop, as their boss standing beside them hadn't told them to.

Mr. Rui stood in the darkness, coldly watching the workers dig vigorously. His face was hidden in the shadows, making it impossible to discern his expression, but his dark eyes sparkled with a hint of excitement. His hands were gently stroking a wooden box, adorned with ancient and intricate patterns, caressing it softly and tenderly as if it was a lover's face. Sorres stood to Mr. Rui's right, his face also showing excitement. His old face was flushed red, clearly struggling to contain his excitement, after working hard for so long, the moment to see results had finally come, how could he not be excited? Behind Sorres stood guards lined up neatly, their expressions wary, each holding a weapon, watching their surroundings cautiously. Even though they knew they were in a desolate mountain area, they dared not relax.

On the other hand, Jue stood relaxed to Mr. Rui's right, not feeling particularly tense, nor showing a hint of excitement. To him, all this was merely ordinary. Even if they found the legendary item, it had nothing to do with him. He was only there to repay Mr. Rui, and as soon as this favor was returned, he could completely leave Mr. Rui. As for Yu, he was not among this group, busy on his honeymoon, with no reason to get involved. Even if Yu wanted to come, Mr. Rui, with his doting nature for his daughter, would never allow it.

"It should be about time." Mr. Rui remarked as he watched the increasingly deep pit. This was his first sentence the entire night, a tone without a hint of excitement, but slightly different from his usual speaking tone. The hand that had been stroking the wooden box stopped, his eyes unwaveringly focused on the pit illuminated by the dim light, seemingly wanting to see through the thick soil to find what he desired.

A "ding" sounded, neither crisp nor dull, but it invigorated the originally exhausted people. The workers, whose strength was nearly depleted, brightened up at this, measuring the size of the object, then hastened their digging to bring it out as soon as possible, for only then could they quickly get some rest.

The workers indeed sped up their digging, but the soil deep within the small mound was even firmer, taking them nearly an hour to completely unearth the object. As soon as it was uncovered, four or five workers attempted to move what appeared to be a giant box. To their surprise, the box seemed fixed to the ground, and no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't budge it.

"No need to exert yourselves anymore." Sodar, standing at the edge of the pit, stated. He did not want these people's rash actions to jeopardize Mr. Rui's plans, so he ordered them to stop.

"You can leave now," Sodar said, looking expressionlessly at the sweat-drenched workers, his eyes devoid of emotion.

One by one, the workers climbed out of the pit. Sodar assigned five people to escort them out, and soon, a few screams echoed through the dark valley. Mr. Rui and others turned a deaf ear to the screams, except Jue, who showed a momentary sign of reluctance, but quickly concealed it.

Sodar, together with a group, swiftly leveled the large pit, even hurriedly constructing a crude staircase. Although these people were not ordinary, having stairs was better than jumping up and down like monkeys. The dim light was replaced with bright white incandescent light. The white light illuminated the entire bottom of the pit, and only then did Mr. Rui fully see what had been unearthed.

It was a rectangular object, two meters wide, three meters long, and one meter high. From afar, it looked like a coffin, but unlike a coffin, this rectangle lacked a lid. It looked as if it was carved from a huge black stone, with peculiar patterns engraved on all four sides. Under the light, it seemed as if a faint white light was flowing within those patterns. The top was smooth, like a mirror, reflecting the bright surrounding light. In the center of the top was a small square recess, with strange patterns engraved around its edge.

Approaching the strange stone sculpture, Mr. Rui trembled as he carefully touched its smooth, mirror-like top with his right hand. As soon as his hand made contact, a cold sensation spread through him. What surprised Mr. Rui was that despite being buried in soil for so long and only just excavated, the stone sculpture was not covered in mud, as clean as if it had just been washed.

"This is indeed the legendary item," Mr. Rui remarked with admiration. Just the stone used to carve this sculpture was unheard of by him, and the ancient carvings on it possessed an extremely mysterious feeling. As a Superpower User, Mr. Rui seemed to sense a trace of energy within it, but upon closer inspection, he found nothing.

"I am finally about to succeed," Mr. Rui said, trembling as he handed the wooden box to Sorres. He then carefully opened the box, extracting a rectangular block made up of five fragments. From its size, it matched the recess on the top of the stone sculpture.

The rectangular block in Mr. Rui's hand was made of an unknown material, not like metal, yet glistening with a metallic shine. Contrary to its light appearance, Mr. Rui had to exert some force to lift it.

Cautiously and more cautiously, Mr. Rui, not daring to breathe heavily, held the block and carefully approached the stone sculpture.
