Unmotivated Deity

The Secrets Of A Great Handmaiden

When Earl and Jien had arrived at the front door of the manor they were welcomed by a smiling Runa. In her hands was a brown leather bag that had a symbol akin to a green leaf on its front, stating its purpose as a medicinal treatment kit. Lord Losler only smiled lightly at this as he dismounted from his horse before helping Jien do the same. The sight of Runa holding the bag of medicine and supplies confused Jien. He knew that he was injured and would need continuing treatment for his wounds, but he didn't understand how Runa would know and be so prepared. It wasn't like it took them long on horseback to get from the entrance of the city to the door of the manor, the city itself was just larger than a large town in all honesty. He also hadn't seen anyone rush to the manor to inform her, not to mention that nobody would really be able to see the bandages because of the traveling cloak his father had put around his shoulders as they had been riding.

"Right this way Jien. I will help get your wounds redressed." Runa stated with a warm smile as she put her arm around his uninjured and lightly pulling him along, trying her best to not aggravate his injured leg or shoulder as she led him toward his room. She knew for a fact that Jien would not let her treat him in another room of the manor, even if she could guarantee that there would be absolute privacy. Her young lord was picky like that, preferring anything remotely private in nature to take place in a space that could be called his own domain.

Once they were in Jien's room Runa closed the door gently behind her and guided Jien to sit on his bed. She began removing the leather armor that Lord Losler had left on during the travel to ensure that if further danger occurred, he would have at least some protections. She was diligent and gentle in her approach, ensuring not to force him to move his injuries much in an attempt to reduce any pain he may feel. As she was working at her duties calmly Jien decided to sate his curiosity, hoping that Runa would answer his questions.

In as collected a tone as he could bring himself to produce, he voiced his question. "Runa, how did you know to have the medicinal kit ready? I am fairly certain that nobody in town knew I was injured, and I didn't see anyone attempt to send a message to the manor."

Runa could only smile even more warmly to that question. Jien had never questioned her regarding her methods in the past. Even though she had a habit of always being ready for what was happening regardless of the circumstances. He had always seemed to ignore this behavior as something to be expected, perhaps because it was an everyday occurrence for them. Still, the fact that Jien was taking an interest in something other than reading books of magic theory or other topics seemed to brighten her mood a bit more.

"Well, I suppose to the best way I can answer that question is to tell you a bit more about myself." Runa stated calmly as she moved from removing his armor to removing his shirt and pants for better access to the wounds. This exposed the bloodied bandages on his leg and shoulder, an expected result since healing potions only help the healing process not complete it on their own.

Runa started with Jien's shoulder, working at removing the bandages, cleaning the wound thoroughly, before applying another healing potion along with green jell that carried a strong herbal scent over the wound on both sides of his shoulder. She then chanted a simple healing spell and let it assist in further accelerating the natural healing process before beginning to warp his shoulder once more.

After she was done with this step she finally continued her explanation, seemingly having wanted to be fully focused during the previous process. "When I was young, your father and mother had decided to take me in from the orphanage here in Afrem City. Even at that point in their life just shortly after returning from the academy they knew that they wanted a family, so they took me in to assist in caring for their future child." she stated this casually as she began a similar process of cleaning his leg wound.

Jien knew Runa as a person fairly well, but he had never delved into her past and she had never seemed particularly interested in sharing it. He had not known that she was an orphan or that she had been taken in so long before he was born. It had to be said that one would start at the military academy at the age of fifteen and graduate after four years before choosing their future path. The discussion made it sound like somewhere around the age of nineteen his parents had decided that they had wanted a family and had brought Runa into their home. They had not had Jien for a but more than ten years after that point in their early thirties. This choice likely being so that they had time to set up a decent place for their child to be raised in Afrem City.

Runa however did not pause there, continuing her tale without any concern for the new revelations regarding her past. "I was only six years old at the time and had yet to go through the unsealing rite." she stated as she finished with Jien's leg. She then used some sturdy fabric to create a sling, gently placing Jien's injured arm in it to ensure that it would be held in place better for the healing process. This process was the cause for a pained groan on Jien's part. He had been able to hold back any sound during the process of applying medicine and wrapping the wound, but this required the actual shifting of the shoulder as a whole.

Once this was complete Runa walked to the bathroom, filled a small wooden tub with warm water and a few rags before walking back to assist her young lord in cleaning off after the journey. "When I turned seven your parents stated that they would like me to consider what would be most helpful to the future of their child. They didn't force me to make a certain choice like some noble houses do, but they asked me to consider what I was brought into their home to accomplish."

She seemed to peer off into the distance for a long moment as she was working to clean Jien's body of the sweat and dirt from the battle and ride back to the manor. "I thought long and hard about what could be useful to the future young lord or lady. I considered many of the gods and goddesses of commerce, I considered battle-oriented paths to assist in your future protection, I even considered some of the gods of hospitality to try and make your life as comfortable as possible. In the end however, I came up with an odd idea. If I could understand what would happen on the next day, next hour, or even next minute, couldn't I be prepared to assist my future lord or lady in everything that they may need?"

"So, I made my choice. I chose to give my worship to the one-eyed oracle, one of the goddesses known for her ability to see the future through probabilities." As she made this statement her left eye, usually a light blue in color seemed to glow with a purple light hidden in its depths. Her right eye on the other hand misted over as if it was completely blind, its gaze seemingly staring into the void.
