Chapter 37: Is It Enough?
The next day, Tyler woke up very early in the morning. He was very excited as it was matchday, at least for the senior team. Him, being grouped with the reserve team for the weekend, played his match the day prior and ended up scoring a hattrick. And even though he wasn't in the matchday squad, he still wanted to support his team and as such, he felt like a football fan waking up to watch his favorite team play.
He did a bit of exercise in the morning which consisted of some basic yoga, some and a few straining exercises which made him take a trip to the gym. Even though the system had significantly toned down his daily exercise routine, it still made him do something significant whenever he had a day off from training... a day like today.
By the time he finished with his exercises, it was already past nine in the morning. He went back to his room, had a long shower which included an in-toilet concert and laid on his bed, scrolling through social media and reading football news. Even though he was well on his way to becoming a professional footballer, he was still in the end a fan of the game. And this being the time of the year when transfers were made, it made everything a lot more exciting.
"The January transfer window". Tyler muttered under his breath as he continued scrolling through twitter. It was the last day of the transfer window, or deadline day as it was commonly called. A few teams were hoping do quickly finish up some business before the transfer window closed for the next five months.
"I think it's fair to say that twenty twenty-five has been the worst winter transfer window of all time". Tyler shook his head as he saw the deals that were being lined up.
There were a few shock deals like Marcus Rashford moving over to Aston Villa, but it just didn't feel the same. He didn't feel the same amount of transfer dopamine that he'd felt in the earlier winter transfer windows.
A few hours later, he got up from his bed and changed into better clothes, and took his identification. As he was a part of the first team, he didn't need to buy tickets whenever he wanted to watch them play. He still needed his identification though, it wasn't like he was very famous and the stewards would be able to recognize him without any way of verifying his identity.
After changing his clothes and bringing along his player identification card, Tyler walked towards the stadium. A few minutes later, he arrived at his destination... The Stade Louis II, Monaco's home stadium.
He stopped a small distance away from it, taking in it's sight and all of a sudden, he started to feel very excited. Even though he signed for Monaco a little over a week ago, he still hadn't visited their home stadium.
Compared to the other elite teams in Europe, Monaco's stadium wasn't all that. It's capacity was a measly eighteen thousand compared to Old Trafford's seventy five thousand capacity or The Bernabeu's capacity that was nearly a hundred thousand. But to Tyler, it was a giant behemoth, the largest stadium he had ever seen.
Just outside the stadium, the fans were gathered outside, filing and rushing to get into the stadium and get seated for the match that would start in an hour or so. Looking at the sheer number of people waiting just to watch the team he was in play, made Tyler realize how massive the club he was in was.
Today, he wasn't a part of the squad but from the moment he put on their jersey and represented them on the field, all those eyes would be on him. He would be responsible for their moods for the forthcoming week. He could determine whether they would be happy or sad. He could cause them great joy but at the same time immeasurable heartbreak, and all because he was the one kicking the ball.
"Football's a powerful sport". He muttered to himself as he finally moved from where he was standing, and took a separate entrance, away from the current hustle and bustling happening in front of the stadium.
After giving his clearance to the security, he entered he stadium and walked towards one of the front rows. He didn't seat in the VIP section that was reserved for special attendees like him. He wanted to be with the fans throughout the game. He wanted to see their reactions, and feel it with them.
He turned his attention to the pitch and watched as the two set of teams did warmup drills. He saw the familiar figure of his teammates on one end of the pitch and chuckled when George fired a shot over the goalpost. At the other end, the Toulouse FC players were warming up in their training kits. The away end was being filled with purple and white as more and more fans came to watch the match.
Eventually, the two teams finished their warmups and went back to their locker room. Ten minutes later, they reemerged from the tunnel, walking in a single file, side by side, lead by their respective captains. Tyler's breath caught as he saw them arrange themselves in a bigger line, and as the Monaco players started shaking the hands of the Toulouse players.
During the weekend, he played with the reserve team and scored a hattrick. During training, he did well and arguably deserved a spot on the matchday squad, a spot that he wasn't given because the coach thought he wasn't ready.
Now, he was in the Stade Louis II, watching a match between two decent teams in the Ligue 1. And while he wanted to support his team, he also wanted to see...
He wanted to see if after all his hard work, he still wasn't good enough to start against the real pros, not the part time jobbers that he played against in the match the previous day. He wanted to know whether he could do well enough against the real footballers.
Every time he stepped out to play, he gave his all. That wasn't a question, but now he needed to know. His best... was it enough? Or was he not good enough?
