Chapter 9: The rival gase
The morning air was crisp as Sophie stepped out of the mansion, her heels clicking against the marble floor in the grand foyer. Today, Tony had insisted she accompany him to his office. She wasn't sure what to expect—if it was a casual visit or something more—but her pulse quickened at the thought of entering his world of power, business, and cold decisions.
In the elevator, Tony didn't speak much. His usual detached demeanor seemed more pronounced today, and Sophie found herself watching him closely, trying to catch any hint of emotion in his eyes. But he was always so difficult to read, a man of calculated silence. She couldn't shake the feeling that he was hiding something—something that wasn't just about the contract, something deeper.
When they arrived at his office building, Sophie was struck by the sheer scale of it. The lobby was sleek and modern, with polished stone floors and towering glass windows that let in the light. As they walked through the corridors, the air seemed thick with ambition. Employees bustled around them, each one with their own agenda, none of them daring to make eye contact with Tony. It was clear that he commanded the room, even in a building full of people just like him.
They entered his office, and Sophie was momentarily taken aback by the sheer size of the space. It was everything she had imagined—modern, intimidating, and cold. The floor-to-ceiling windows gave a view of the city below, but it was the desk at the center of the room that caught her attention. It was large and imposing, covered in papers, yet everything in perfect order.
Tony moved toward his desk, his hands clasped behind his back as he surveyed the room. Sophie took a seat across from him, trying to maintain some semblance of composure, but the unease settled deep within her. She wasn't sure why she had agreed to be here, to be a part of his world, but the truth was that she had no choice. She had signed the contract; she was bound to this life now.
The door to the office opened suddenly, and Sophie looked up to find a tall, sharply dressed man entering. His presence was striking—intense, almost predatory. He had an air of confidence that matched Tony's, but there was something different about him. His eyes locked with Sophie's, and for a brief moment, she felt a cold chill run down her spine. There was no warmth in his gaze, only cold calculation.
"Sophie, this is Victor Stone," Tony said, his voice carrying the weight of something more than a simple introduction. "Victor, this is my wife, Sophie."
Victor extended his hand, but his smile didn't reach his eyes. "Pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Hunter," he said smoothly, though there was a hint of something more behind his words.
Sophie shook his hand, trying not to let the unease show on her face. There was something about Victor that unsettled her. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but the way he looked at her, the way he spoke—it was as though she were a mere pawn in a game she hadn't signed up to play.
Tony didn't seem to notice the tension. "Victor and I go way back," he continued, his tone almost dismissive. "We've had our differences over the years, but we've also had our fair share of business dealings. He's a competitor—"
"A rival, Tony," Victor interrupted smoothly, his eyes flicking to Tony. "Let's not sugarcoat it."
Tony's lips pressed into a thin line, but he didn't respond. Sophie could sense the animosity between the two men, a palpable tension that crackled in the air. She had known that Tony's business was cutthroat, but being in the presence of someone who seemed to actively oppose him made her realize just how high the stakes were.
"Rivalries aside, I hear you've been making quite the impression on the business world, Sophie," Victor said, his gaze returning to her. "I must admit, I didn't expect Tony to bring his wife into the fold so soon. But then again, Tony's always been full of surprises."
Sophie's heart skipped a beat at the implication in his words. Was Victor suggesting that she was just another pawn in Tony's game? She wasn't sure, but she didn't like the way he was looking at her, sizing her up as if she were a prize to be won or a challenge to be conquered.
Tony's voice cut through the tension. "Victor, we're here to discuss business, not personal matters," he said sharply.
Victor raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "Of course, Tony. Always so focused on business." He shot Sophie one last look before turning to Tony. "Let's get to it then. I've heard about your new venture with the Dalton Group. I must admit, I'm impressed. But don't think for a second that I'll let you take the lead without a fight."
Tony's expression hardened, and Sophie could see the familiar coldness settling into his features. The rivalry between them was not just professional—it was personal. The stakes were higher than she had imagined.
The meeting continued, with Victor and Tony exchanging sharp words and business strategies. Sophie sat in silence, trying to absorb the weight of the conversation, but it was impossible to ignore the tension between the two men. Each word they exchanged felt like a battle, each glance a challenge. It was clear that their rivalry wasn't just about business—it was about pride, power, and something darker.
After what felt like hours, the meeting finally came to an end. Victor stood up, his gaze lingering on Sophie for a moment longer than necessary. "Well, Tony, I look forward to seeing how this plays out," he said with a sly grin. "But remember, there's always room for one more competitor."
With that, he turned and walked out of the office, leaving Sophie and Tony alone once again.
The moment he was gone, Tony let out a slow breath, his posture relaxing. Sophie remained silent, her thoughts racing. She had seen the way Victor had looked at her, the way he had subtly tried to undermine her presence. She wasn't naive—she knew that in Tony's world, everyone had an agenda. And she was no exception.
Tony turned to her, his expression softening ever so slightly. "Don't mind Victor. He's a... complicated man," he said, though the hint of bitterness in his voice was unmistakable.
Sophie nodded, but her mind was elsewhere. She had just witnessed the raw edge of Tony's world, the brutal, unrelenting power struggles that defined his life. She had been thrust into this world without warning, without preparation. And now, as she looked at Tony—her husband, her business partner, her enemy in some ways—she realized just how much she had yet to learn.
But one thing was certain: in this world of high-stakes rivalry, Sophie had to decide just how far she was willing to go to survive.
