unlikely partners

Chapter 5: Under the same roof

Sophie stepped out of the sleek black car that had arrived to pick her up, her heart pounding in her chest. The mansion before her was nothing like she had imagined. It was a sprawling estate, with its towering stone pillars and ornate iron gates. The landscaping was impeccable, each flowerbed neatly trimmed, every lawn pristine. It was a world away from the modest life she had known, and as she gazed up at the imposing structure, she couldn't help but feel like a fish out of water.

"Welcome to your new home," the driver said as he opened the door for her, his voice polite but distant.

Sophie nodded in response, though her mind was swirling. This wasn't just a move. It wasn't just about a new address. This was her new reality—married to a man she barely knew, living in a mansion she didn't belong in, all for the sake of a pendant and a contract that tied her to Ethan Kingsley.

Her hand tightened around the handle of her suitcase as she made her way toward the entrance. The grand doors opened as she approached, revealing a pristine marble foyer. The scent of fresh flowers and polished wood filled the air, and she could hear the faint sound of classical music playing in the background.

Ethan was already there, standing in the center of the foyer, his cold blue eyes watching her intently. His suit was as immaculate as ever, and he exuded an air of power and control that seemed to fill the room.

"You're here," he said, his voice flat. "I'll show you to your room."

Sophie swallowed hard, trying to mask her nerves. "Thank you," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

As they walked through the mansion, Sophie couldn't help but feel out of place. The hallways were lined with expensive artwork, the floors gleamed under the soft light, and everything had an air of opulence she had never experienced before. Each room seemed more grand than the last, and Sophie's heart sank further with every step. She had been thrust into a life she didn't want, and yet there was no turning back now.

Finally, they reached a large set of double doors. Ethan opened them, revealing a spacious bedroom that could have fit an entire apartment inside. The bed was enormous, the linens crisp and white. The walls were adorned with tasteful, expensive décor. Everything screamed wealth, perfection, and control.

"This will be your room for the duration of our agreement," Ethan said, stepping inside and placing her suitcase on the bed. "There's a full staff here, and you'll have access to all the amenities. If you need anything, don't hesitate to let me know."

Sophie stood frozen in the doorway, taking in her new surroundings. She didn't know how to feel. Part of her wanted to scream, to run away and reclaim the life she had lost. But she had made this decision. She had signed the contract. And now, she was here. Whether she liked it or not, this was her reality.

"I'm not here to play house, Ethan," she said, her voice steady but laced with frustration. "I'm here because I made a deal with you. This—" She gestured around her, "—this is just a part of the agreement. Don't expect me to act like your wife."

Ethan didn't flinch at her words. If anything, he seemed unfazed. "I didn't ask you to act like anything," he replied coolly. "Just follow the terms of the contract, and we'll both get what we need. That's all."

Sophie's chest tightened as she tried to push down the rising anger inside her. She had known this wouldn't be easy. She had known he would treat her like nothing more than a business arrangement, but hearing him say it so bluntly still stung.

"You can't just treat this like a transaction," she said, her voice sharper now. "I'm a person, not a tool for your convenience."

Ethan's eyes met hers, and for the briefest moment, there was a flicker of something in his gaze—something that wasn't cold, something that might have been regret. But just as quickly, it was gone, replaced by his usual icy demeanor.

"I never said you weren't," he said, his tone now devoid of emotion. "But I also don't expect you to get in the way of what needs to be done."

Sophie felt a lump form in her throat as she realized just how empty his words were. There was no warmth in his voice, no sign of any real connection between them. It was all just a matter of convenience.

Turning away, she walked toward the large window that overlooked the sprawling grounds below. The view was beautiful, but it did little to calm her. She had entered this world under false pretenses, thinking she could maintain some semblance of control. But now, standing in this mansion, she realized just how far from home she truly was.

"You should rest," Ethan said, his voice breaking the silence. "We'll discuss the next steps tomorrow."

Sophie didn't turn around. She couldn't. She was afraid that if she looked at him again, she might just lose her resolve entirely. Instead, she simply nodded and murmured, "Goodnight."

And with that, she was left alone in the cold, unfamiliar room, surrounded by luxury but feeling more isolated than ever. Ethan had made his intentions clear: this wasn't about them. It was never going to be about them. It was all about the deal, the contract, and the power that came with it.

But as Sophie lay in the huge, empty bed that night, she couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted between them. Something more than just a contract. A part of her didn't want to admit it, but she was starting to wonder if she had made the right choice.
