Chapter 22: Secret unveiled

Sophie had been looking forward to this day for weeks. It had been months since she had seen her closest friends from back home, and with everything that had happened in her life lately, she was eager for some semblance of normalcy. She had invited Sarah, her best friend from university, over to the mansion for a casual visit. Despite the grandeur of the place, Sophie longed for the comfort of her old life—the simplicity of talking to someone who knew her before all the chaos began.

The doorbell rang around noon, and Sophie rushed to answer it, her heart fluttering with excitement. Sarah stood at the threshold, a wide grin on her face, her arms open for a hug. Sophie laughed and embraced her tightly, feeling a sense of warmth that she hadn't realized she missed.

"I can't believe you're really here!" Sophie said, stepping back to take in Sarah's appearance. Her friend looked as vibrant and carefree as ever, her blonde hair bouncing with every movement.

"I know, it's been too long," Sarah replied, stepping into the foyer. "You look amazing, Sophie. Life in the big city must be treating you well."

Sophie smiled but couldn't help but notice a glint of curiosity in Sarah's eyes. "It's… been an adjustment," she said, leading her friend to the living room.

They sat on the plush sofas, sipping tea as they began catching up on the last few months. Sarah, ever the curious one, immediately began probing into Sophie's life, asking about work, the mansion, and, inevitably, her mysterious marriage.

"So," Sarah began, her voice laced with playful intrigue, "tell me about this husband of yours. You've been pretty tight-lipped about him, considering you're married now."

Sophie hesitated for a moment, unsure how much to share. The complexities of her marriage to Tony were difficult to explain, and she wasn't ready to divulge all the details. Not yet.

"It's… complicated," Sophie said carefully. "Tony's a businessman, and our marriage was part of an arrangement, more of a strategic decision than a traditional one. But he's not… like I expected. He's not easy to understand, but he's good to me."

Sarah raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "So, you're saying you're happy? Even with all the business stuff mixed in?"

Sophie looked down at her hands, the weight of the situation settling in her chest. "I don't know if I'm happy, Sarah. But I'm safe, and that's something I can live with."

Her friend's eyes softened, sensing the uncertainty in her voice. "Well, I think you're handling it better than most people would. You've got this mysterious billionaire husband, and here I am, still trying to figure out my love life. You're making me jealous, Sophie."

Sophie chuckled, but the jealousy in Sarah's tone was hard to ignore. "You'll figure it out, I'm sure of it."

Just as the conversation took a lighter turn, there was a knock at the door. Sophie excused herself to answer it, but when she opened it, she was met with an unexpected sight—her parents, standing on the doorstep, looking both concerned and curious.

"Mom, Dad?" Sophie said, her voice tight with surprise. "What are you doing here?"

"We came to check on you," her mother said gently, though Sophie could see the subtle disapproval in her eyes. "We've been trying to reach you, but you've been distant. We needed to talk to you about… something important."

Sophie blinked in confusion, stepping aside to let them in. "Is everything alright?"

Her father, a tall, stern man, spoke up. "We heard you were married, Sophie. But you didn't tell us who you married. We deserve to know, don't you think?"

Sophie's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't planned on telling her parents about Tony just yet. The news of her marriage had been a delicate subject, and she had kept it from them in order to avoid unnecessary questions and judgments. But now, it seemed that the truth had caught up with her.

"I—" Sophie began, but she was interrupted by Sarah, who had followed her into the hallway.

"You didn't tell them?" Sarah said in disbelief. "Come on, Sophie, it's your parents. They have a right to know who you're with."

Sophie turned to her friend, her mind racing. She didn't want to drag her parents into her complicated life, but it seemed like there was no avoiding it now. She needed to be honest with them, even if it meant facing their disapproval.

"I didn't want to worry you," Sophie admitted, her voice quiet. "But I'm married to Tony Hunter."

Her parents exchanged a glance, and Sophie could see the shock in their eyes. Tony Hunter was a name that everyone knew—a ruthless businessman with an empire of his own. His reputation preceded him, and it wasn't exactly a reputation that Sophie's parents would approve of.

"Tony Hunter?" her father repeated, his tone more incredulous than disapproving. "He's one of the most powerful men in the city. Are you sure about this, Sophie?"

Her mother's voice was more measured. "You didn't ask for our approval before you went ahead with this, and now you're telling us after the fact. Why didn't you trust us enough to confide in us, Sophie?"

Sophie's chest tightened, and she felt a lump form in her throat. She had always been close to her parents, but this marriage had changed everything. She didn't know how to explain the complexities of her situation, the contracts, the stakes, the power dynamics. She didn't know how to make them understand.

"I didn't want to burden you with all of this," Sophie said softly, her voice shaking. "But I need you to trust me. I made this decision for my safety, for my future. I'm not sure where it's going, but Tony… he's not the man the rumors say he is. He's complicated, but he's good to me."

Her father's expression softened slightly, though his concern remained. "We just want to make sure you're okay, Sophie. This isn't just about who you married; it's about your happiness. You're our daughter, and we need to know you're not in over your head."

Sophie looked at her parents, her heart heavy with the weight of their expectations. "I'll be fine. I'm safe, and I'm learning how to navigate this new life. I promise."

The silence between them hung in the air, thick with uncertainty. Sophie didn't know what her parents would think about her marriage to Tony, but she hoped they could eventually see that she was doing what she thought was best for herself. That, at the very least, she was trying.

Her mother's voice broke the silence. "We'll need time to understand, Sophie. But we trust you."

Sophie nodded, feeling a small sense of relief wash over her. The conversation had been difficult, but it wasn't over. There was still a long way to go before her parents fully accepted her decision, but she hoped, in time, they would.

As the visit continued, Sophie couldn't shake the feeling that her life was spiraling into a world she wasn't fully prepared for. Her marriage to Tony had changed everything, and as much as she tried to find her footing, she knew there were still many challenges ahead—especially when it came to those she loved the most.
