Chapter 17: A love rekindled
The mansion felt different now, quieter, almost like a sanctuary after the chaos Sophie had endured. The air had changed, thick with an unspoken promise of protection and, perhaps, something more.
As soon as they arrived, Tony immediately ordered his guards to stay on high alert. His mind raced with strategies to ensure Sophie's safety, but it wasn't just about protecting her from external threats. A part of him, the part he had kept buried for so long, wanted to shield her from everything—from the pressures of his world, from the dangers she might face, and from the vulnerability he had exposed by letting her in.
"Sophie is not to go anywhere without our knowledge," Tony instructed his head of security. "I want constant updates. And if she speaks with anyone, I want a report."
The guard nodded, knowing the gravity of Tony's words.
He turned to his driver. "Make sure you inform me whenever Sophie leaves or visits someone. Don't let her out of your sight."
Sophie, still in shock from the events that had unfolded, barely heard the orders. She was lost in her thoughts, her body aching, but her mind was preoccupied with the strange tenderness she had felt when Tony had held her in the warehouse. His intensity and protectiveness had touched something deep within her, but she wasn't ready to acknowledge it yet.
Once inside the mansion, Tony had the maid prepare a first aid kit to care for Sophie's wounds. She had cuts and bruises from the struggle, and he couldn't stand the thought of her suffering.
He gestured to his personal assistant, who quickly prepared the necessary supplies, and Tony went to Sophie's room. He knocked lightly, but when there was no response, he opened the door.
Sophie was sitting on the edge of the bed, lost in thought, her face pale and bruised. When she looked up, there was a mix of relief and sorrow in her eyes.
"I'll take care of you," Tony said softly, his usual harsh tone gone, replaced by something gentler.
Sophie blinked, surprised by the sincerity in his voice. "I didn't think you cared," she whispered, her voice trembling.
Tony paused, his chest tightening at the thought of the fear she must have felt. "I care more than you think. You're my wife. And I won't let anyone hurt you."
He motioned for her to sit back on the bed. He reached for the first aid kit and began gently tending to her injuries, his hands careful and deliberate. As he applied antiseptic to a cut on her arm, Sophie watched him, her heart stirring with emotions she couldn't quite name.
"You know, I could have died today," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Tony froze, his fingers hovering over her skin for a moment before he continued. "No," he said firmly. "Not on my watch."
Sophie's breath hitched, and she looked into his eyes. "You would have lost everything," she murmured, the words slipping from her lips before she could stop them. "The contract, your empire… me."
Tony's gaze softened. "The contract doesn't matter as much as you do, Sophie. You're my wife. I love you."
Sophie's heart raced at his words. It was the first time he had said it out loud, and she couldn't help but feel a warmth spread through her chest. She had never expected this from him—this tenderness, this devotion.
"I don't know what to say," she whispered, her voice faltering. "I never thought we'd get here, Tony."
He finished treating her arm and gently placed the bandage. "We're here now," he said quietly. "And I'm not letting go. I want to share this with you. I want to protect you… and I need you to trust me."
Sophie looked at him, her breath catching in her throat. The man who had once seemed so cold and unreachable was now sitting before her, vulnerable in his own way. It was a side of him she had never seen, and she couldn't help but feel drawn to it.
She nodded slowly, her emotions overwhelming her. "I trust you," she said softly, the words leaving her lips before she even fully understood what they meant.
Tony smiled, his eyes softening. He stood up and helped her to her feet. "I'll be here when you need me," he said quietly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "But for now, let's take it one step at a time."
Sophie's heart fluttered in her chest, and she knew that this was the beginning of something new. The bond between them had shifted, and she couldn't deny the growing feelings she had for him.
"Stay with me tonight," Tony said, his voice low and earnest. "Let me take care of you."
Sophie hesitated for a moment, but then nodded, feeling the pull between them too strong to ignore.
As they moved toward the bed, Tony's protective instincts took over, and he made sure she was comfortable. For the first time in a long time, Sophie felt safe—truly safe. And as they lay down together, the space between them closing, Sophie realized that this was more than just a marriage for convenience. It was becoming something much deeper, something neither of them had anticipated.
Tony's hand found hers under the covers, and he gave it a gentle squeeze. Sophie turned to face him, her heart pounding in her chest.
"I love you too," she whispered, the words finally escaping her lips.
Tony's eyes softened, and he smiled. "Then let's make this work. Together."
As they lay there in the quiet of the mansion, the world outside seemed far away. For the first time, they were not just two people bound by a contract—they were two hearts, slowly but surely, learning to trust, to love, and to heal
