Unappreciated Treasure

Chapter 4: Flashback

Chelsy sat in the dining room, and watched Ken leave. Her eyes accompanied him, and she saw him shutting the door behind him.

With a sad look on her face, she dropped the silverware she was holding onto the marble gray porcelain plate.

She had gone to Ken's villa to spend sometime with him, but it was rather unfortunate there was an emergency, and he had to attend to it.

'Anyway, he said he would be back in thirty minutes. Chelsy thought to herself.'

So there was no reason to be sad or get worked up.

"Uh"

She sighed, stood up and took the plates to the kitchen. She judiciously cleaned them and placed them in the dishwasher. She took a glass from the countertop and poured herself some cranberry juice.

After taking a sip, she walked into the living room and started admiring the Kaleidoscopic memories of Ken's framed photographs on his clean white walls.

These picture frames adorned his living room with a homely feeling.

She was immediately drawn to a picture of Ken standing with Beth Holloway, director of the Holloway Charity.

Chelsy got closer to the picture and raised her hand towards it. Using her index and middle finger, she caressed his face on the picture.

''This was the day we met my dear Kenny.''

She muttered to herself with a smile on her face.

"Flashback"

Flashback to over one year ago. Rachel and Chelsy volunteered for the Holloway charity which supports children living with autism.

They were really excited because volunteering and assisting others brought them so much joy and fulfillment.

''Chelsy, it is finally the D day. Can you pinch me so that I can know it isn't a dream?''

Rachel giggled, with her pupils sparkling with excitement.

Chelsy gently pinched her cheek and she shouted.

"Ouchhh"

''Damn it girl. Do you work in a metal production company? I asked you to pinch me and not stab my face with a knife.''

Chelsy could not help but chuckle softly.

''Come on now baby girl. Let's go get our badges before the guests start coming.''

Rachel sighed

"Humph"

"Jeez. How am I best friends with this barbarian?"

Chelsy gave Rachel a playful wink and they walked away.

As they walked through the hallway, Chelsy bumped into a tall handsome man wearing a dark blue tailored suit.

"Thud"

The file he was holding fell from his hand and papers were scattered all over the soft red carpet. It happened so fast that Chelsy didn't realize she was clinging onto the man's jacket.

'' I… I am so sorry sir. I wasn't looking where I was going.''

She stuttered as she spoke with a shaky voice while bending down to pick up the papers that were scattered all over the floor.

The sound of rustling papers could be heard as she nervously put them together.

After she was done picking them, she rose from her bending position, and looked at him. His big brown eyes were intensely gazing at her.

He had a little smile on the corner of his mouth.

Chelsy stretched her hand and handed the file to him. The man took the file from Chelsy without uttering a single word.

He then walked away with the two men dressed in black suits and black shades accompanying him.

All through, Rachel stood there, looking stunned and didn't utter a single word.

When they left, she held Chelsy's elbow and said excitingly.

"Baby girl, do you know who that man was?"

Chelsy shook her head and said no. Rachel gave a sarcastic laughter.

"Ha ha ha"

''Girl, you should be living under the rocks if you don't know him. That was Ken Roberts, heir to the Roberts Corporation.''

Chelsy was already too stressed to follow up with Rachel's gossip about whom the fine man was.

''Rach, please let's just go already. I don't want to bump into another person again because that would be devastating.''

Chelsy said anxiously.

The charity event came to an end. Chelsy and Rachel were at the display booth handing out gift packs to the families that were present at the event.

Standing in a corner, was Ken Roberts conversing with one of the event's organizers.

He kept staring at Chelsy while talking.

When Chelsy lifted her head, their gazes accidentally met, and it sent a chilling sensation down her spine.

Rachel nudged her and whispered.

"Sis, the hot hunk is staring at you. Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, he is coming towards us."

Chelsy stood there looking confused and asked Rachel to stop fidgeting.

''Rach, will you stop acting weird and stop shaking like a rain-soaked chicken?''

As they stood there, mumbling, Ken walked up to them.

''Hello there miss beautiful. Can I have one of those please?''

He pointed at one of the gift packs on the table. Chelsy swallowed the lump that was in her throat, looked away and said shyly.

''Sure sir.''

She picked up one of the gift packs from the table and handed it to him.

''You look shy and timid. Do I make you uncomfortable?''

He asked with a little smile plastered at the corner of his mouth.

'' Ehm. I… no sir.''

Chelsy stuttered, looking and sounding like a complete idiot.

She didn't even know what she was saying. Her whole face was red with shame and embarrassment.

''Okay, then. In that case, can you please tell me your name? I am Kenneth but you can call me Ken. I would like us to become friends.''

He asked Chelsy with a smile that brought out his fine facial features.

'' Chelsy Powers''

She replied, while shaking his hand which was already extended towards her.

That day, they exchanged numbers and started talking from time to time. She enjoyed their conversations and started falling for him, bit by bit.

Then, two months after their encounter, Ken invited Chelsy for dinner in a luxurious restaurant.

When she got there, a lady dressed in a black knee-level skirt and a black blazer walked up to her and asked.

'' Hello! Are you Miss Chelsy Powers?''

Chelsy nodded affirmatively, and the lady asked Chelsy to follow her into a private room.

There, Ken was sitting at a dinner table set for two. When he saw her, he stood and walked up to her, giving her a gentle peg on the jaw and said.

''Welcome.''

This sent chills down Chelsy's spine because that was actually the first time a man aside from her dad and brother had ever given a peg on her jaw.

''Tha... Thank you.''

Chelsy stuttered with her face as red as an over ripened tomato.

She sat on one of the chairs looking at the table which was filled with all kinds of varieties. She asked if all the food on that table was to be eaten by just two people. He laughed and said he didn't know what she would like to eat, so he ordered everything on the menu.

Chelsy was stunned and thought to herself.

'He thinks I'm such a foodie, huh?'

She gave a warm smile and told him he was so thoughtful.

They ate their dinner, and he said the reason he invited her today was because he had something to tell her.

He extended his hand across the table and held hers.

''Chelsy, I really like you and would want you to be my girlfriend''

Chelsy was stunned with a frozen look on her face. Her whole system felt as if it had been switched to airplane mode.

He called again and asked if she heard what he had said. Chelsy snapped out of her trance and replied.

''I am sorry Ken, but I don't know what to say.''

He gave a gentle squeeze to her hand and asked.

''Do you like me? Even if it's just a little?''

Chelsy nodded, and he smiled, stood up and walked over to her seat. He stooped to the level of her face with his big brown eyes staring at her, and their faces were just inches apart. He gave a warm smile.

''Then say yes.''

Chelsy felt her spirit leaving her body. She felt as if she was in a trance.

With a voice that sounded like a whisper, she said.

''Yes Ken, I will be your girlfriend.''

In the blink of an eye, he slammed his lips on hers and kissed her softly. That was Chelsy's first kiss and it tasted so heavenly.

"Present day"

Back to the present. Chelsy's eyes fluttered, and she opened them to see the bright lights in the living room and the sound of people talking on the TV.

She had fallen asleep while waiting for Ken to come back.

'I guess I was really exhausted from all the tasks I did at work today.'

 She thought to herself.

Chelsy checked the time and exclaimed.

''Oh my gosh! It is eleven forty-five pm. I have to get back home.''

She took out her phone to see if she had any missed calls from Ken, but her call history was empty.

She quickly dialed Ken's number, but it said the number had been switched off. So many emotions were going through her mind at that point.

With all the tiredness from work, she didn't want to think much about it and called a taxi which took her home.
