Chapter Fifty-Three

Early the next morning, the farm was abuzz with activity. Discover tales on m_vl_em_p_yr

Many people hurried to work; among them were quite a few who hadn't worked at the farm before, all rushing over.

"Xiaoshan, I called my son back from the county," said one.

"Xiaoshan, I don't want to work for the village head anymore," said another.

These people were all able-bodied adults who had either been working outside or had jobs in Long Fakui's factory. But because Long Xiaoshan had stood up to Long Fakui without suffering a loss, beating Ergouzi and his gang so severely and only being detained for a few days before being released...

Many in the village said Long Xiaoshan now had solid connections in the county.

Moreover, Long Xiaoshan provided extra meals for the workers on his farm, essentially offering free food, plus a fifty yuan wage per day.

Wages like that were even better than what one could get as a laborer in the county.

Not to mention that the treatments at Long Fakui's factory were less than half.

Many had been hesitant to make a decision, fearing that Long Xiaoshan couldn't stand up against Long Fakui.

And they were reluctant to let go of the money Long Fakui had docked in the factory. But now, they were resolute, willing to forsake that money for a chance to work with Long Xiaoshan.

"Fine, work hard and I won't let you down," Long Xiaoshan said.

Long Xiaoshan's farm was a hive of activity.

Meanwhile, at a factory located at the foot of a mountain several miles from the farm, Long Fakui was in a furious rage because the factory had hardly any workers that day, not even enough to operate the machines.

"Where is everyone? Where have they all disappeared to?" Long Fakui bellowed at a relative who usually helped him manage things.

"Village head, they've all run off to Long Xiaoshan's, where it's said they're provided with two meals a day and can make one thousand five hundred a month. They don't want to come to work anymore," the relative said.

In private, he thought that if he weren't related to Long Fakui, he would have considered going as well.

"Long Xiaoshan! Him again!" Long Fakui angrily smashed a teacup.

He had thought it was almost a sure thing that Long Xiaoshan would definitely be sentenced.

He had already made his moves on the inside, made the calls to the local police station, and spent tens of thousands. Yet, Long Xiaoshan was released after just a few days, with no repercussions.

When he called the police station, they only said that the person had been taken by the county, and nothing more could be found out.

The money was spent, but the task wasn't accomplished.

How could Long Fakui not be furious?

Not to mention that now, almost all the workers in his factory had been poached by Long Xiaoshan.

"Long Xiaoshan, I won't rest until I've gotten rid of you! I swear it!" Long Fakui said venomously, his eyes flashing with malice. He had made a name for himself in the county town and wasn't just any ordinary farmer.

After a busy morning on the farm, Long Dashan said, "Xiaoshan, I think we need to figure out a way to secure the farm better. We don't want a repeat of that incident with Ergou. Plus, the crops you're growing are valuable. We need to watch out for thieves as well."

Listening to his father, Xiaoshan replied, "Dad, you're right. We must be vigilant. I'll go to Lotus Township later and buy some dogs, and then spend money on installing surveillance and alarm systems around the farm."

"Good, it's great that you have a plan. I don't know much about these things," said Long Dashan.

Xiaoshan quickly gobbled down a flatbread, grabbed the car keys, and left. Although Elder He was supposed to monitor the pickup truck, Xiaoshan had learned to drive quickly, and even though he hadn't received his driver's license yet, his driving skills were no longer a problem, so he often drove it.

He got to the farm's edge, started the vehicle, and was about to drive away when he saw Chun Tao, covered in sweat, walking towards him. "Little Xiaoshan, I heard you were going to Lotus Township," she said.

"Yeah, that's right," he replied.

```
"Could you give me a ride? I need to buy some things in the township," Chun Tao looked at Long Xiaoshan with a pitiful expression.
"Of course, there's nothing I can't do. Get in," Long Xiaoshan opened the car door.
Chun Tao sat next to Long Xiaoshan.
"Fasten your seatbelt," Long Xiaoshan said as he saw Chun Tao completely unaware of how to, and helped her pull and secure the seatbelt.
"Chun Tao, what are you going to buy in the township?" Long Xiaoshan asked.
"Oh, I'm buying some eye drops for my mother-in-law. Her eyes aren't very good," Chun Tao said softly.
"You're really good to your mother-in-law, considering how she treats you."
Chun Tao's face darkened as she said, "After all, I'm responsible for her son's death."
"Chun Tao!" Long Xiaoshan exclaimed loudly, "That's all nonsense, you don't owe anyone anything."
"Little Xiaoshan," Chun Tao's eyes suddenly reddened.
"Let's go, we should head off."
As the two of them talked, they drove off.
The journey was shaky; even the pickup was bumpy beyond measure. Long Xiaoshan thought the road really needed repairs, or development would always be hindered.
Half an hour later.
The pickup arrived in Lotus Township, and it just so happened to be market day, with the township bustling with activity.
Long Xiaoshan first took Chun Tao to a pharmacy to get the medicine, then when they walked out to the lively market, Long Xiaoshan said, "Don't you want to buy something else?"
"I don't need anything else. What about you?" Chun Tao was very frugal.
She only wore very old clothes, and she didn't even wear a bra.
Long Xiaoshan shook his head, walked up to a stall that sold women's clothes – though it was just a street stall, the clothing was still better than what Chun Tao was wearing. Long Xiaoshan roughly guessed Chun Tao's size.
He picked out a few brightly colored outfits with a youthful vibe and two pairs of jeans, then asked, "How much for these pieces?"
"Four tops and two pairs of jeans – let me think, how about three hundred yuan?" The forty-something stall owner offered a price.
"Okay, but you have to throw in two of these," Long Xiaoshan pointed at some bras nearby.
Everything was for sale at these kinds of street stalls, including bras.
The stall owner glanced at Chun Tao who was standing behind Long Xiaoshan. She had a sharp eye and, taking note of Chun Tao's chest, laughed and said, "Are they for your younger sister?"
"Yes, let her try them on for size," he replied.
"Okay, younger sister, come here. I'll help you try them on," the stall owner hurriedly pulled Chun Tao's hand.
Chun Tao initially thought that Long Xiaoshan was buying for his family, but was surprised it was for her. And when she saw the stall owner pulling her to try on a bra, her face turned as red as fire, and she quickly waved her hands saying, "Little Xiaoshan, I don't need it."
"Younger sister, how can you not need this? You are young now and it seems you've not had children. Wait a few years and you'll understand. If you don't wear these, sagging will be severe; you'll regret it too late," the stall owner unabashedly pulled Chun Tao inside.
The stall was sheltered by a canopy, and there was also a curtain that enclosed a space that could serve as a makeshift changing room.
Chun Tao was pulled inside by the stall owner.
Long Xiaoshan waited outside.
He was actually a bit embarrassed himself, but there was no alternative; he couldn't let Chun Tao go around without a bra.
