Chapter 259: Role Substitution (Thanks to Alliance Hierarch Hongchen Milu Returning)
"The director had mentioned before that there might be some clues provided during the play. I suspect that the impostor student might have received some hints about the plot exclusively known to her," Li Teng analyzed.
"Which one of you is the impostor?" Elsa glared fiercely at the four students, Yang Yiju, Liu Shina, Huang Tingting, and Fan Wendie.
As for Liu Yin, she wasn't someone Elsa could suspect. Even if there were doubts, only Li Teng could question her. Her task was merely to clarify things with these four students.
"I'm not."
"It's not me."
"Absolutely not me."
"I'm definitely not."
The four students were terrified, each denying the accusation.
"If anyone has any clues or suspicions, feel free to speak up. Let me tell you this, based on our experience from acting in so many plays, if we don't find out who the impostor is, most of us will end up losing, and only she will win. I suppose none of us want that to happen, right?" Elsa continued.
Everyone looked around at each other, but no one spoke.
"What do you think?" Elsa turned and asked Wang Min who was beside her.
The two teachers were certainly beyond suspicion, so in her view, Wang Min was reliable.
"I think... I'm just saying it off the cuff, and it might not be right, but I think... Classmate Yang is very suspectful," Wang Min said, looking towards Yang Yiju.
"How could it be me? I'm not!" Upon hearing this, Yang Yiju was so aggrieved she was almost in tears.
"The extra person in the photo, only she saw when she was washing up in the bathroom. The extra person in the bed at night was also discovered by her. Why is everything so coincidentally linked to her sightings or discoveries? Could it be her doing? Classmate Yang, I am only focusing on the matter, not targeting you personally..." Wang Min explained.
The other three girls, having heard Wang Min, retreated from Yang Yiju's side with faces full of horror as if they saw a ghost.
"It really isn't me, I don't know why I always see her, it really isn't me," Yang Yiju said, completely distraught and breaking down into tears.
"Don't cry, we are just discussing, and this assumption of impersonation is just a hypothetical premise. We can't conclude it's you without solid evidence. You don't need to be so scared," Li Teng walked over, patted Yang Yiju on the shoulder, and consoled her.
"I was just speculating, and what I mentioned were just coincidences I observed, nothing definite, not real evidence," Wang Min hastily added.
"So, what should we do now?" Elsa asked Li Teng for advice. This plot was not ordinarily tricky and it also gave her a sense of being at a loss on how to proceed.
"I have a feeling that this case involves many lives and goes back to the operation of a psychiatric hospital decades ago. Why that psychiatric hospital closed after only five years, and what happened during those five years, might help us unravel the mysteries of this deserted island," Li Teng pondered and replied to Elsa.
"Wow, Boss Li, you're amazing! Your few words have opened my eyes," Elsa gave Li Teng a thumbs up.
"Since when did I become Boss Li?" Li Teng was taken aback.
"You are playing a boss and a painter in the play, so it's quite normal to call you Boss Li. Since we are acting, it's better if we immerse more into our roles," Elsa smiled. She was helping Li Teng establish an authoritative image in front of these new actors. Calling him by his name simply wouldn't have the same effect.
"You make a good point," Li Teng said thoughtfully.
Previously, the plot was a tangled mess, largely because he hadn't immersed himself fully in his character.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have even noticed that a model was missing.
If he wanted to understand what was happening on this island, it seemed necessary for him to fully embrace the role he was playing.
What was his role? A boss and a painter.
He was the owner of this rehabilitation center.
Here, he called the shots.
Although the psychiatric hospital had been closed for decades, it didn't mean that no traces of Spider Silk could be found. The related material might still be held in the archive of this rehabilitation center.
Li Teng decided to use the doctor he met when he entered as a starting point for his investigation.
After walking back the way he came in for a while, Li Teng saw an office.
The doctor who had led him here was sitting inside.
Li Teng walked in. The doctor looked up at him but did not speak.
Li Teng glanced at the doctor's name badge, which read Chen Ziwen, a chief doctor, apparently holding a higher position within the rehabilitation center.
"Doctor Chen, who is in charge of the rehabilitation center now?" Li Teng asked Chen Ziwen.
Elsa walked over and waved her hand in front of Chen Ziwen, who showed no reaction.
It seemed he was well aware of Li Teng's condition, knowing that Li Teng suffered from hallucinations, which is why, when Li Teng previously said "we," the doctor also responded with "you," presumably to avoid aggravating Li Teng's condition.
Just like when Li Teng asked the female nurse if she could see other people, the nurse said she could, but actually she could not.
He was the boss, but they treated him as a psychiatric patient, so their responses were merely accommodating his condition.
"Director Hu is in charge," Chen Ziwen replied to Li Teng.
"Where is Director Hu now? Call him over, I need to speak with him," Li Teng brought up to Chen Ziwen.
"Director Hu might... um, what do you need? You can talk to me; it's the same," Chen Ziwen hesitated for a moment before rejecting Li Teng.
"I need to access the rehabilitation center's archive records, those documenting all the unusual events, including the information from the psychiatric hospital decades ago. Can you provide me with that?" Li Teng looked into Chen Ziwen's eyes.
"That... what unusual events... we only have patient files archived here," Chen Ziwen's gaze flickered.
"Is that so? You have two options, one is to honestly provide me with the records, and the other is for me to take drastic measures to make you provide them. Which method do you think would be better?" Since Li Teng had clearly defined his next course of action, he would, of course, stop at nothing to achieve his goal.
"How about this, I still have a meeting this morning. After I finish, I will organize all the documents and give them to you later this afternoon," Chen Ziwen stood up, clearly stalling Li Teng.
Li Teng gave Elsa a look.
Elsa kicked Chen Ziwen in the groin.
"Ah!" Chen Ziwen screamed in agony as he knelt down on the ground, then looked around in utter fear.
