Chapter 223: Assassination (3rd Update, Requesting Monthly Votes)
After studying the map for quite some time, Li Teng still decided to head for that outpost.
He didn't even have a knife on him, and according to Director Yuan, they were supposed to start with one. Thus, the knife must be at that outpost.
The outpost was still far from area C, and Hunters were only allowed to move between areas C and B. Before reaching area C, they were safe and didn't need to worry about being ambushed.
What needed to be watched out for were the ubiquitous zombies.
Although Liu Hui really didn't want to walk with the show-off Li Teng, she couldn't bring the map outside of the Time Bubble, and the middle-aged woman had only given them one map, which was in Li Teng's hands. She had no choice but to follow Li Teng in order to avoid getting lost in the vast white snowy field.
"Didn't you want to split up and go separately? What are you following me for?" Li Teng stopped and asked Liu Hui.
Liu Hui glared at Li Teng with a face full of annoyance but didn't speak.
How infuriating it was to be teased by the show-off!
Although the area outside the camp was a vast expanse of snow, there were still some woods, mountains, and buildings that could be used to orient themselves. For Li Teng, this wasn't difficult. After determining the direction of the outpost, he found the nearest path and walked towards it.
Walking through the snowstorm was extremely hard, and without exchanging for peak state, Li Teng wouldn't even be able to climb.
He immediately exchanged for seven days of peak state in one go.
The balance of Life Resources in the Death God APP was enough for him to exchange for more than six years of peak state, so seven days was nothing.
In Li Teng's view, six years was enough for him to become the Best Actor.
By then, he would see what he would do about earning more points to gather life.
After about two hundred meters of flat ground, the two entered a mountainous area.
Every now and then, they had to climb to continue moving forward.
At a steep slope, Li Teng easily ran and leaped up it, then left without looking back. But when Liu Hui reached the bottom of the slope, she tried a dozen times, and all kinds of running starts didn't get her up.
As her strength was drained, she found it even more impossible to climb.
The surroundings became eerily quiet, and Liu Hui became despairing.
"Do you want my help?" Li Teng suddenly appeared on top of the slope.
"Yes," Liu Hui finally answered after being silent for a while.
"Then beg me," Li Teng said with his arms crossed and a look of amusement on his face.
"Go to hell!" Liu Hui cursed.
"Fine then, continue playing by yourself. I won't wait for you," Li Teng said and then turned to leave.
"Wait! I'm asking you to pull me up!" Liu Hui panicked and had to swallow her pride.
"Didn't you just tell me to go to hell?" After coming back, Li Teng wouldn't let it go.
"I... I apologize," Liu Hui muttered reluctantly.
"What was that? I didn't hear you clearly," Li Teng exaggeratedly put his hand to his ear.
"I apologize!" Liu Hui was almost in tears from anger.
"Remember, I am pulling you up only because of your sister Liu Yin. If you talk to me like this again, there won't be a second chance," Li Teng finally reached out and pulled Liu Hui up.
After being pulled up, Liu Hui couldn't help but despise this jerk even more... It was despicable to bicker with a girl, but she had to admit the jerk was really strong. With just one hand, he easily lifted her whole body, which, clothes included, weighed no less than sixty kilograms.
She really underestimated this jerk.
The two of them continued on their way in silence.
Li Teng was leading, and Liu Hui followed. The mountain terrain was complex, with occasional spots that required climbing.
Liu Hui didn't dare to provoke Li Teng any further and refrained from uttering any more stimulating words. Li Teng likewise didn't dwell on their earlier altercation, and after climbing up himself, he always pulled her up too.
Moving forward, they followed a mountain path that led to a weapons and ammunition storage checkpoint.
However, the snow-covered path was littered with bodies.
"Try to keep quiet. These might not be just bodies; they could be frozen zombies that could attack us at any moment. If we get surrounded, it'll be tough to get out alive," Li Teng whispered to Liu Hui after carefully examining a corpse.
Liu Hui turned pale. She had previously participated in the filming of a zombie movie and was aware of the ferocity of these zombies. With her ability, handling one or two at a time was her limit. If all these bodies turned out to be zombies and awoke, she and Li Teng, unarmed, would have no place to bury themselves.
But the unexpected still happened.
After they had walked a little further, a standing zombie appeared ahead of them.
For some reason, the cold hadn't frozen it solid, and it was aimlessly wandering the passageway ahead.
Around it were many other zombies, sleeping in the cold.
If they made too much noise, all these sleeping zombies might be awakened.
"Shh!" Li Teng gestured for silence and motioned for Liu Hui to crouch down on the spot, making no more sound.
Li Teng himself bent down and carefully approached the zombie, trying to stay out of its line of sight and not touch any of the sleeping zombies in the snow.
Finally, when he was about two or three meters away from the wandering zombie, Li Teng charged forward, stretching out his arm and tightly strangling the zombie's neck, then twisting hard, forcefully breaking its spine and tearing its neck to lay it down on the ground.
Li Teng had never hunted zombies like this before, but everything he had just done still came from his muscle memory.
The muscle memory he had trained on the battlefield of gunfights for over fifty years.
Those checkpoints got increasingly difficult further on, and many times he couldn't use a gun. He had to stealthily make his way behind the enemy, using the neck-twisting method for assassination.
This method of assassination was clearly suitable for dealing with zombies too.
Even, it was easier to handle zombies—these non-mutated ones had necks even more fragile than normal humans, making them easier to twist and break.
Liu Hui, hunkered down there, watched all this coldly. Although she still felt disgust for the jerk, she had to admit he gave off a very strong vibe... especially in a situation where cheats couldn't be used.
They continued forward, encountering a few scattered zombies along the way, but Li Teng took care of each with stealth attacks from behind. Half an hour later, they finally arrived at the checkpoint on the top of the small hill.
They didn't go in but first circled around the checkpoint to scout.
There was no sentry on duty at the checkpoint watchpoints, and both the checkpoint and its surroundings were eerily quiet—as if not a single living person was there.
Li Teng approached slowly, reaching the windows of the checkpoint building and cautiously peeked inside.
Bloodstains were everywhere—on the walls and the floor.
