Chapter 162: The Past (2nd Update for Monthly Votes)
"It must have been obtained from inside the cave, right? There's a treasure chest on the platform in front of the treadmill made of stone slabs, wasn't it from that chest?" Guo Haopeng spoke up and asked Li Teng a few questions.
"Yes," Li Teng nodded.
"This brother is a master indeed!" Guo Haopeng looked at the knife with an envious expression on his face.
Guo Haopeng had only made it within the last half meter two days ago and it was getting increasingly difficult — it felt like it would take two or three days just to advance a centimeter, and it would only get harder. He estimated that without spending a year or two inside the cave with continuous training, he wouldn't be able to get past this final hurdle.
Many things require not only diligence but also talent.
"For you to have entered the cave, that's quite impressive too," Li Teng encouraged Guo Haopeng a few sentences.
The soldier, without the aid of a wristwatch scanner, had dealt with three Bear Rhinoceroses to enter the cave, which showed that his overall abilities weren't too shabby either.
"The cave? Is it the one guarded by the three Bear Rhinoceroses? Those three are too tough to handle; I've been sent flying countless times and had to give up," Gao Fei chimed in.
"Yes," Li Teng nodded again.
Elsa sighed as she looked at Gao Fei, regretting she had not cultivated a good relationship with Li Teng. When it mattered most, Li Teng had chosen the Bunny Girl over her, otherwise, she could have ridden on his coattails to victory.
Now, it seemed that Li Teng's group and the soldiers' group were out of reach for them; their only hope was that Huang Xun and Luo Bijiao would end up last.
If Elsa's group ended up last, she was very likely to be the one eliminated, because she had earned fewer Time Index points than Gao Fei.
Elsa was somewhat overthinking it.
Until now, Huang Xun and Luo Bijiao hadn't even been to the Hunting Cabin. Every day, Luo Bijiao used her "Ruyi Fan Flying Palm" to intimidate Huang Xun into running to earn money for food, then she would eat the lion's share, leaving only a little bit for Huang Xun.
If she weren't counting on Huang Xun to keep running and earning money, she wouldn't even want to give him that small portion.
She had thought about the competition among the four groups.
But she really couldn't run, nor did she want to.
All she did was exploit Huang Xun.
Then, she would also drive Huang Xun out of the house, making him go on adventures.
Huang Xun wasn't a fool either; he knew their group was bound to finish last, so as long as his Time Index points were higher than Luo Bijiao's, he would be safe.
In nature, the law of survival of the fittest does not require you to be stronger than your opponents, just stronger than your companions.
When the tiger comes chasing, you just need to run faster than your companions.
So, every time Luo Bijiao sent him out, he would deliberately get himself bitten and not bother trying to hunt the Giant Rats, and the two of them muddled along until today.
If not them, then who else would be at the bottom?
People continued talking while their wounds gradually healed.
Li Teng used the knife to cut off the tentacles from their bodies, rescuing them one by one.
Only Huang Xun was left behind.
"Li Teng... Brother Teng, please, let me down!" Huang Xun pleaded with Li Teng.
Li Teng pretended not to hear.
"Oh! Now you remember to call for Brother Teng? You really have got some nerve!" Gao Fei mocked Huang Xun.
"What are you yelling for? Just hearing your voice annoys me!" Luo Bijiao walked over and swung her "Ruyi Fan Flying Palm" at Huang Xun. She suddenly remembered that when she was complimenting Li Teng just now, Huang Xun had actually mocked her!
Was he trying to rebel?
Tied up by the tentacles, Huang Xun couldn't escape and took her palm strike head-on.
Luo Bijiao was still not satisfied, continuing to slap Huang Xun one after another.
Huang Xun's screams became incessant, his cries filling the sky, wondering why he was still being punished when everyone else had been rescued.
Was this the retribution for siding with the wrong person?
The problem was, even if he wanted to cling to Li Teng now, Li Teng wouldn't let him!
Moreover, there was no room left on Li Teng's "legs" as they were already full.
Everyone arrived at the entrance of the cave, where a huge fog sphere outside could teleport them back to the big house they had come from.
"You'd better not go back now. There are a lot of Bear Rhinoceroses in the area around the big house, and with your current strength, going back means suicide," Li Teng warned everyone.
"Yes, we can't go back now. We should wait for the midnight reset and let it teleport us back automatically," Gao Fei nodded in agreement.
"Liu Yin, we can head back now," Li Teng called out to Liu Yin.
"Are you going to leave us behind? What if... what if the Octopus Monster appears again?" Elsa asked with a worried expression.
"There shouldn't be any more for now. I'll come over to check every hour or two. If there's another Octopus Monster, I'll take care of it," Li Teng thought for a moment and then assured Elsa.
"Thank you so much," the group expressed their gratitude to Li Teng.
"Hold on a moment, I'll be right back," Li Teng said as he pressed a few buttons on his wristwatch, and suddenly a cloud of white fog appeared out of the void, wrapping around his body, and the next moment, he vanished without a trace.
"Is that teleportation?" Everyone stared in amazement.
Li Teng was playing an entirely different script from theirs!
When Li Teng returned, he walked to the center of the Octopus Cave and made a placing gesture on the ground. The next moment, a table appeared on the floor.
Then the table was set with several large plates of fragrant meat.
"These should be enough for you to eat. Alright, I have to get busy now. I'll come back to check on you in an hour or two. There shouldn't be any more Octopus Monsters appearing," Li Teng briefly addressed them and then left with Liu Yin through the large teleporting fog sphere.
Since the battle had largely not taken place near the big house, the damage to the big house was not severe, only a few holes had been made in the walls.
After returning to the big house, Li Teng went straight to the door of the basement.
He obtained a key and tried to see if it could open the alloy door lock to the basement.
"Stop," Liu Yin called out to Li Teng.
"Something wrong?" Li Teng looked at Liu Yin.
"You haven't spoken to me for a long time," Liu Yin brought up, a hint of grievance in her voice.
Although Li Teng had no obligation to keep her company with conversation, Liu Yin still felt wronged.
After all, when she'd first arrived, he had been caring for her like a big brother, but then he suddenly stopped paying much attention to her.
"Oh... I've been a bit busy, and I saw you were busy too, so I didn't initiate conversation," Li Teng replied as he sat down on the couch.
His time wasn't as tight now. His team was far ahead, and the other three teams had no chance of catching up to Li Teng and Liu Yin.
With the Time Index in his hand, he could end the thirty-day countdown at any moment.
When to break out, when to finish this script, the initiative was already in his hands.
Spending some time talking with Liu Yin was not a big deal.
"It's nothing. I just remembered something from the past," Liu Yin began.
