Chapter 28
In the eight-tatami-sized Japanese-style room, the girl slowly opened her eyes.
The light, filtering through the wall lamps framed in raw wood with imitation sheepskin paper, was already soft and even, yet she couldn’t help but squint slightly.
She sat up, supporting herself with her hand. Normally, this action would cause a faint pain in her injured arm, but now she felt nothing.
She looked down at her left arm. It was no longer wrapped in bloody bandages, and the bruises and cuts had vanished without a trace, leaving only smooth, fair skin.
She slipped off her white dress, opened the wardrobe, and carefully examined her body in the built-in dressing mirror.
Something was off. Not only had the injuries on her arm healed, but even the flesh and bone wounds inflicted by the evil spirits had completely recovered.
However, the warmth of the young man’s embrace still lingered in her sensory system.
Subconsciously, she touched her lips, silently savoring that prolonged kiss.
Her cheeks were hot… such a strange sensation…
Realizing she was standing naked, reminiscing about that night, her cheeks instantly flushed with a deep red.
She quickly dressed and hurried downstairs. At this moment, there was only one person she wanted to see.
2.
In the living room on the first floor, an old-fashioned wall clock with a calendar ticked away. The moonlight, like water, spilled cold white frost on the floor through the thin windows.
Passing the clock, the girl glanced at it in the moonlight, frowning slightly—
It was August 15th, just past eleven at night.
She had no memory of anything after the night of July 31st, probably having been in a coma. Yet, she woke up as usual, with no discomfort, as if no one had tended to her.
The horrific disaster seemed like just a nightmare…
Yet, the pain in her memory clearly told the girl that the mutation in the inner ring had indeed happened:
Nearly all the villagers had turned into Rakshasa ghosts, and her adoptive brother was torn apart by their fangs and claws in battle. In the end, the former villagers either died in agony as rotting flesh or became victims under her blade, leaving no survivors.
Thinking of this, she clutched her chest, as if ants were gnawing at her heart.
3.
Not far away, a guest room was dimly lit, suggesting someone inside was still awake.
The girl stood in the corridor, hesitating to approach that door.
I should go back; he might already know my true identity. I, stained with blood, have no right to see him.
Just as she turned to leave, rapid footsteps approached from behind. Suddenly, arms encircled her from the rear.
She was startled and tried to move forward, but the not-so-strong arms held her even tighter.
He buried his face in her neck, his warm breath causing her heart to flutter.
Her voice was as faint as a mosquito’s: “Aren’t you afraid of the Divine Descendant?”
“For my fiancée to fight on the front lines, going through hell and high water, while I hide in the shrine without a care, such a Divine Descendant is really lousy.”
“Pfft…” She couldn’t help but laugh, “Don’t say that; it feels like badmouthing others while having an affair.”
Susa-kun is so adorably simple, not realizing that the “Divine Descendant” is right in front of him, the girl silently thought.
“Sorry! I didn’t mean to trouble Miss Somezaki, these days I just…” His face was frantic as he let go and kept apologizing.
“It’s okay, stop explaining. It sounds like a long-standing plot, the more you describe it, the worse it gets.” She smiled faintly, but her throat tightened in pain.
“But it’s really great that Miss Somezaki is okay. That night you were so badly injured, I almost thought…”
“Hey, Susa-kun…” The girl bowed her head, interrupting him softly, “This is wrong.”
“Huh?”
“This is wrong, for you and for me…” She repeated, pretending to be calm as she declared to him—
“It’s better if Susa-kun and I keep our distance. After all, I am the Divine Descendant.”
He froze, his pupils trembling, unable to speak for a moment.
So, I’m going to be hated after all.
The girl felt a bitter taste in her heart and turned to leave again. Unexpectedly, her wrist was suddenly grasped, and she stumbled into his embrace.
“Don’t push me away anymore, Airi.”
This was the first time the young man called her by her name.
“Why…” Tears shimmered in her eyes, and she struggled to suppress her sobs, “Everyone in town says I’m a cold-blooded, murderous villain…”
“No, I believe more in the Airi I see
with my own eyes.”
The young man wiped away her tears, embracing her and gently stroking her soft hair. Seeing no resistance from the girl, he carried her into the bedroom and quietly closed the door.
At midnight, the hands of the clock overlapped. Their breaths mingled, lips and tongues entwined, gradually becoming disordered, their faces flushed.
Below the Hidden Mountain, the stream murmured. Bees buzzed among the flowers, greedily sipping nectar. The grass swayed, whether from a breeze or a raccoon sneaking a drink of Shejia’s new brew.
4.
“Was there a noise downstairs last night? Did Airi go to see Susa-kun?”
“Sorry, I crossed the line with him…”
“It’s okay, Airi is grown up now! Did you guys…?”
Ryuka wanted to ask, “Did you guys take precautions?” but swallowed her words, feeling an uncontrollable sadness welling up.
Airi is dead, and the robot can’t get pregnant. “She” looks just like Airi and has Airi’s memories, but she isn’t the real Airi.
Ryuka clenched her clothes, tears falling. Her long eyelashes cast a melancholic shadow in her brown eyes.
“All this was seen by “Airi.” “She” stepped forward, holding Ryuka’s shoulders, and asked softly, “What’s wrong?”
Ryuka wiped away her tears and smiled again: “Nothing, just a bit moved! Oh, the research group has been working day and night on blood production research, and finally made a breakthrough. Airi no longer has to perform exorcism rituals!”
However, “Airi” heard this good news with a solemn face, her voice strained: “Ryuka is still hiding something from me, right?”
“…!”
“I woke up alone, without anyone caring for me. Despite being severely injured, my body didn’t have a single mark. I haven’t eaten for a long time, but I’m not hungry. During ‘that’ with Susa-kun, there was no bleeding, only intense pleasure…”
The girl pressed her lips tightly, falling into silence. After a moment, she hesitantly said, “Who am I… Am I Somezaki Airi, or a robot?”
Ryuka hugged her tightly, tears streaming down:
“Silly child, you’re still as sensitive as ever. If the robot looks like Airi, behaves and thinks like Airi, then you are Airi.”
“But what about him? Should I continue this mistake?” Airi’s voice choked, “There can be no happiness between him and me, whether in the past, present, or future…”
“Live in the moment.”
Ryuka gently patted the girl’s back, thinking: Airi has returned, in the form of a humanoid robot.
