Chapter 42 Age Birch
「The next day.」
Wang Mu got his gear together and, accompanied by Qin Yuyan and his followers, headed toward Divine Wood Forest.
The Divine Wood Forest was vast; outsiders diving into it could wander for ten days to half a month without grasping their whereabouts.
For Cultivators, with their Divine Sense and strong perception, it was not so difficult.
However, the terrain of the Divine Wood Forest was complex, and in some areas, there was miasma that could greatly inhibit a Cultivator's Divine Sense perception.
At those times, relying on eye power alone was actually the better option.
Qin Yuyan's party kept to the rules; they didn't give unsolicited advice and followed the directions Wang Mu pointed out.
The first thing to find was Age Birch Wood.
"Age Birch is accompanied by Purple Vine Flowers; seeing the flowers means the Age Birch Wood is growing nearby."
"In the southwest corner of the Divine Wood Forest, I have seen this kind of Purple Vine Flower. The Age Birch you want should be found there."
As they entered the Divine Wood Forest, Wang Mu led the three with ease through the woods.
The dense vegetation inside made ordinary flying methods risky, such as Sword Control—you could be a ten-year expert and still risk crashing.
"Is it far?" asked Qin Yuyan.
"At a normal pace, starting from here, it's about one and a half hours," replied Wang Mu.
"If it takes one and a half hours at your speed, for us," Qin Yuyan glanced at the two behind him, "if the direction is correct and there are no Fierce Beasts in our way, one hour should be enough."
Wang Mu offered no rebuttal.
"Xu Feng, get ready," Qin Yuyan commanded his two followers.
"Okay!" One of the followers nodded, and with his hands together, his fingertips moved rapidly while whispering murmurs that sounded like the buzz of flies.
In just a few seconds, three spiral-like green orbs flew out and landed on each of them.
"Light Body Technique!"
A sudden breeze picked up, and the world seemed to change.
The three were slightly suspended above the ground, barely touching it with the tips of their toes, their bodies as light as fluff.
It felt as if a light blow could carry them away.
This must be a spell. Wang Mu thought to himself.
"Do you need us to cast one on you?" Qin Yuyan asked. "It's easy for us to use this Light Body Technique, but it might be hard for you to adapt on short notice."
Wang Mu shook his head.
Indeed, he would adapt if he used the spell frequently. But if he had never encountered it before, it would take time to get used to the Light Body Technique, wasting time instead.
"We'll lead, you just guide from behind," said Xu Feng. "If you can't keep up, just shout, and we'll slow down."
Wang Mu responded, "No need, I'll guide, and you just follow."
With that, Wang Mu lightly leaped onto a branch of a large tree, leaving only a shadow behind.
"So fast!" Qin Yuyan squinted his eyes and promptly followed.
The other two exchanged a glance and hurried after.
In the forest, four figures shuttled about. The lead figure moved silently—not with excessive speed, but with incredible lightness, skimming like a dragonfly without disturbing a single leaf. The three figures behind, by contrast, were akin to frogs diving, breaking branches and scattering leaves as they moved through the woods…
As they continued, the expressions on the three men's faces subtly changed because they realized they were starting to fall behind.
"To think that Qi Cultivation Seventh Level skills, even with the aid of the Light Body Technique, could be outmatched by a mere mortal?" Xu Feng glanced ahead at the slowly vanishing figure, momentarily questioning the value of his years of Cultivation.
"This young man is quite peculiar... no wonder the Venerable Lord assigned him this task..." another follower, Zheng Hai, shook his head.
"I don't believe it; it must be because of the environment, he's too familiar with it," Xu Feng found a reason for himself. Looking toward the fading silhouette, he quickly asked, "Young Master, what do we do?"
"This should be far enough," Qin Yuyan nodded. "You two can go now."
The two followers nodded slightly and came to a halt.
Qin Yuyan gave them a look and immediately sped up to catch up, calling out as he went, "Brother Wang, slow down, we can't keep up!"
Wang Mu slowed his pace slightly and landed on a tree trunk.
After a few moments, Qin Yuyan finally caught up.
Wang Mu glanced back and asked, "Where are your two followers?"
"They're clumsy. Despite using the Light Body Technique, they still caused quite a stir," Qin Yuyan said with a helpless expression. "Just now they alarmed a few Fierce Beasts and stayed behind to deal with them. They should catch up soon."
Wang Mu nodded.
These people's skills were mediocre at best. They were clearly unfamiliar with the complex terrain of the Divine Wood Forest, far inferior to his own abilities. Though they had spells to aid them, they might run faster in a straight line than him, but in the Divine Wood Forest, they would surely fall far behind. Cultivators really aren't omnipotent after all.
"Shall we continue? We're almost there," Wang Mu pointed ahead. "I can already see the Purple Vine Flowers."
"Of course, let's continue!" Qin Yuyan said courteously. "We'll get a section of Age Birch. By the time we return, they should have handled everything."
Wang Mu then continued to lead Qin Yuyan onwards.
In one and a half hours, using his own pace, Wang Mu arrived punctually at the location.
Age Birch was a type of special Divine Wood.
This Divine Wood emitted a unique life essence, enabling it to live easily for thousands of years.
These Age Birches, nourished by the Immortal World, possessed abundant Life Force. It was said that every hundred years, the Age Birch would evolve once, acquiring a brand-new transformation.
Standing beside such Divine Wood, one's physical strength and spirit would be replenished to some extent.
It was considered an exceptional type of spirit wood.
At the same time, this Divine Wood was not easy to chop; usually, only some branches were taken for use.
They wouldn't chop down the trunk directly.
The village chief said that deep in the Divine Wood Forest, some Age Birches had lived for thousands of years, nurtured into beings like Mountain Spirits and Wild Monsters, and top-tier Spirit beasts.
However, they were typically in deep slumber and wouldn't easily awaken.
Therefore, the lumberjacks of Anle Village could not recklessly chop down these Age Birches, and would only take some branches if needed.
Moreover, Anle Village used very little of these materials.
They were primarily used by Cultivators.
Ordinary people generally couldn't utilize such special spirit wood.
The pale brown trunk radiated a warm luster, akin to ancient Jade.
Slim and tall, the branches and leaves resembled emerald jewels, hanging there, swaying with the wind.
As he approached, a refreshing fragrance hit him, and Wang Mu felt invigorated.
"Should you take it, or shall I?" Wang Mu turned and looked at Qin Yuyan beside him.
"I'll do it myself," Qin Yuyan surveyed the wood, nodded, and then drew a Green Blade Small Sword, quietly chanting a spell.
Instantly, the Green Blade Small Sword flew out, striking at a branch of the Age Birch.
CLANG!
The blade fell, its sharp Sword Qi capable of slicing through metal and stone, yet it only left a minor scratch on the branch.
In contrast, the Green Blade Small Sword now had a substantial nick in it.
"..." Qin Yuyan.
"How can this Age Birch be so hard?" Qin Yuyan's face turned somewhat embarrassed.
"?" Wang Mu.
He looked at Qin Yuyan, puzzled, "Didn't you research this before coming to take it?"
"We did, but I didn't expect it to be this hard," Qin Yuyan hesitated. "Age Birch contains Life Spirit Energy, which should not be extracted with a Magic Artifact; otherwise, the Spiritual Power released by the Magic Artifact will damage the Life Spirit Energy inside the Age Birch. Even if it's chopped off, its effectiveness would greatly decrease."
"So I just used an ordinary blade, propelling it with the Sword controlling technique..."
Wang Mu thought for a moment and said, "Why not just cut it by hand?"
"Why should I, a great Cultivator, cut it by hand?" Qin Yuyan pondered.
"..." Wang Mu.
That made sense.
Wang Mu gave Qin Yuyan a look and came to a simple conclusion in his mind: It seemed he was a second-generation born to a life of luxury. Probably born and raised in a Cultivation Sect... No wonder he looked so refined, untainted by the mundane world. Heh, some people really are born in Rome.
