Chapter 32: Chapter 31: Special Dungeons
Magnus crossed his arms, furrowing his brow in disapproval. "I don't agree with this, Selene. really want to go to that beginner dungeon?"
Selene looked up from her equipment and nodded. "Yes. I've already decided."
Magnus shook his head, his tone firm. "That dungeon is a light attribute. You know that, don't you? You know how dangerous that is."
Selene sighed and knew that he was really worried, but she did. In this world, there existed seven attributes of magic: water, fire, earth, wind, flora, light, and darkness. There are also several dungeons and monsters; the former spawned creatures according to their respective elements. The dungeons were made by the goddess to train the humans against the demon army by leveling up their attributes and skills.
It made sense for most to train in dungeons that were aligned with their main attribute; a fire-element archer would go into a fire dungeon to hone his or her skills. On the other hand, some tried to avoid dungeons with attributes that would oppose theirs. For example, fire users avoided water and wind, water avoided flora and wind, earth avoided fire and water, wind avoided earth and flora, and flora avoided fire and earth. Light and darkness weren't any different.
The beginner dungeon was light-attribute, and human society thought light magic was superior to darkness. That was the root of Magnus's disapproval. But Selene knew better. Thanks to her knowledge from Earth, she knew about the balance between light and darkness. If the light magic was a lot stronger, then it could suppress the darkness. If darkness outclassed light, the opposite would be true. Neither was inherently superior; everything came down to levels and strategy.
Magnus's concern wasn't unwarranted, though. For one, Selene was just level 45, with the minimum requirement to access the beginner dungeon being 50.
Experience gained from dungeons opposing one's attribute was higher, and she needed the boost to level up faster. That was precisely why she had chosen it. With caution and a well-thought-out strategy, she believed she could handle it. And by the time she is supposed to go into her special training, she will be over level 50.
Magnus's voice cut through her thoughts. "You're not ready, Selene. It's not worth the risk. Why go against an attribute that could suppress you?"
Selene opened her mouth to explain but stopped, since in his eyes there lay deep concern. The furrowing of his eyebrows with worry and cons. There was warmth in her chest at his protective stance, something she hadn't had in so long, as after her father died, back on Earth, she hadn't had a fatherly figure. Her grandmother had done her best, but she was too old to fill that role entirely. Magnus's concern reminded her of what she'd lost.
A thought crossed her mind, one that surprised her. She should start calling him "Dad or Father. "
She shook the thought off for now, deciding to attend to his concerns instead. "Magnus, I understand the risks. But remember, I'm from another world. I've played the game and studied the dungeon layout as well as the monsters it spawns. With the right strategy, I can handle it. Besides, the experience gained will be worth it. Training in a light dungeon will help me grow faster than sticking to darkness dungeons."
Magnus's frown deepened. "But what if something goes wrong?"
Selene laid a hand on his arm, her tone soft yet firm. "I'll be careful, I promise. Anything feels off, I'll retreat immediately. Besides, as long as the knights are pass level 100 and Merly is there, I will be fine. "
Magnus fixed his gaze on her for several moments, his face reflecting frustration with reluctant acceptance. Finally, he let out a deep sigh. "Fine. If you are that set, I won't get in your way. But you'd better keep true to your word. No recklessness, understood?"
Selene smiled warmly. "Understood. Thanks, Magnus."
However, Magnus still continued to complain. Selene decided to give up on explaining to him. As long as he doesn't stop her from going to the dungeon everything is fine. But his concern had touched her deeply, and for the first time in years, she felt like she had someone watching over her.
Paying no heed to the tense atmosphere that had just passed between Magnus and Selene, Alaric said nonchalantly, "By the way, Saintess Eri might be visiting that dungeon, too."
Selene's face immediately turned pale. That beginner dungeon is the closest light attribute dungeon to the capital of the Vancaster Kingdom. But the magical barrier around her kicked in, calming her emotions down until she was calm again. She sat up in bed, taking a deep breath. "I know what Saintess Eri looks like," she said with finality. "I'll avoid her as best as I can.
She paused, frowning slightly. It wasn't unusual for a saintess to train in light magic, so Eri's choice to visit a light-attribute dungeon didn't surprise her. What did unsettle her was the thought of crossing paths with someone so significant to the game's plotline.
Magnus crossed his arms, his face dark. "The church wouldn't be reckless enough to send their precious saintess to my fiefdom to train her holy magic. Not with the way I've kept you safe. They'd tread cautiously before coming anywhere near. "
Alaric nodded in agreement. "Word has spread about your efforts to keep Selene safe. I doubt the church would risk bringing Eri here."
Selene still looked perplexed, her mind working over their words. She dug into her memories and couldn't recall the Ravencroft fiefdom having a holy dungeon. Of course, the world didn't only have the usual elemental dungeons of fire, water, and wind. There were also rare special dungeons: Ice, Spirit, Corrupt, Blood, Holy, and Chaos. Selene knew as a Dark Priestess that she could enter Corrupt and Chaos dungeons to level up her dark magic skills. Yet, she knew very little about the location of all these unique dungeons.
"Is there a holy dungeon in this fiefdom?" Selene asked.
Magnus and Alaric looked at each other in confusion as Alaric finally asked, "Does such a thing even exist?"
Magnus shook his head. "There are only seven elemental dungeons, as far as we know."
Selene's frown deepened in confusion. They don't know about special dungeons? That couldn't be. Special dungeons, though rare, were one of the most advertised features of the game. Magnus and Alaric acting like they had never even heard of their existence was unnerving.
Determined to confirm her suspicion, Selene opened her inventory and took out a book: The Encyclopedia of the Saintess Chronicles. She had bought it from her store interface in preparation for surviving in this world, not wanting to miss any critical information. Flipping its pages over after some time, she came to the section on special dungeons and passed it to Magnus.
Magnus took the book and he and Alaric skimmed the entry. The eyes of both widened in disbelief as they read of the existence of special dungeons: Chaos, Corrupt, Spirit, and more were detailed within its pages. They looked at Selene, who nodded gravely.
"I've never heard of this," Magnus muttered, frowning deeply. His gaze lingered on a map that marked the location of a Chaos Dungeon dangerously close to the border of his fiefdom. He kept this information to himself, unsure of how to handle it. "If these dungeons exist, the royal family must have this knowledge."
Selene considered his words and nodded. "That makes sense. In the game, the king was the one who told Eri about them." She paused before adding another bombshell. "The church is also hiding a Corruption Dungeon beneath its premises."
Magnus's head snapped up. "What? How is that possible?"
"It's because of their unorthodox practices," Selene explained, her tone grim. "Their basement activities turned their into a dungeon."
Alaric and Magnus exchanged surprised looks. Neither of them had ever heard of anything like that: a location becoming a dungeon. Finally, Alaric asked what both were thinking. "How does a place even become a dungeon?"
Selene sighed and nodded at their bewildered expressions. "If one place is saturated with too much of one element, it crystallizes into a dungeon. For example, to create a Corruption Dungeon, there would need to be an overwhelming presence of death and decay, like countless dead bodies in one place."
