Chapter 210 The Choice is Hers
For a moment, everything seemed to pause. I slowly turned around, and my eyes landed on Rhydian.
'How did he get here so soon?'
"Help us," I whispered.
Rhydian ran, closing the space between us. He slashed the vines blocking his path.
"Aeris, are you alright?" He cupped my face with his hands.
I pulled away. "Can you help us?" I muttered, my body was already exhausted from the emotions and fighting.
I knew my request was selfish… and it would put him in trouble. However, I needed to escape to a place where the fae cannot easily reach.
"I'll do anything for you." He carried me to my feet.
With a wave of his hand, a portal formed in front of us.
"Damon!" I yelled with the last of my strength.
Damon, Mr. Four eyes and Mr. Green eyes, turned to face me.
They made their back towards us, and the vines lashed at them violently, stopping them in their tracks.
Damon maneuvered, dodging the shooting vines. One vine caught his leg, Mr. Green eyes, who was running behind, swiftly swung his knife through the vines.
The guards began to throw magic balls at us. "Do not let the Princess escape." one of them shouted in the air.
The earth responded, a big massive vine clumped together taking the shape of a man. It stood in front of Rhydain and me, blocking our path to the portal.
"Teg ywaa," Rhydian whispered, his eyes turning into a sharp bright blue.
The Vine creature screeched, shaking the forest. It swung its hand at us. Rhydian ran across to the other, cutting the Vine creature in half.
Before he could turn around, the vine creature regenerated itself, slamming Rhydian across the forest floor.
"Rhydian!" I screamed in panic.
I moved to help him, but the creature stood in front of me.
"Don't even think about it. Tell the King that this is my choice, and he should respect it. I would rather die than go back to that life of a cage."
The creature screeched in displeasure, its hand elongated, and vines closed the gap between us, wrapping around my waist, before pulling me towards it.
"The choice is not yours to make." The creature wabbled.
"Let go…"
My words caught in my throat when a voice rang from behind. "The choice is hers to make." Then, a blade ran through the creature, cutting it in half.
Damon began to stab the vines again and again. "Fucking leave her alone!" he yelled.
"Damon," I staggered to him, my hand held his shoulders, turning him around. My eyes softened. "It is gone," I said softly.
My gaze met his crazy one. "We need to leave," I muttered. "Now."
The madness in his eyes slowly turned to calm. He grabbed my hand, and for a second, we just stood there.
Everything else faded… the guards, the vines, the shouting. It was just his rough, bloodied fingers wrapped around mine. My lips parted, but no words came out.
Then Rhydian stumbled toward us, dragging his sword behind him. He was breathing hard, limping slightly. "We have to go. Now."
Damon didn't move at first. His eyes were still wild, jaw clenched, his chest rising and falling like he was barely holding himself together.
"Damon," I whispered. "Please."
The blue portal behind us crackled louder, its edges beginning to flicker.
Mr. Green eyes and Mr. Four eyes rushed through the trees, covered in cuts, panting. "More are coming," Mr. Four eyes said quickly. "They're everywhere."
"Where's Rhydian taking us?" Damon asked, without looking at me.
"To safety," Rhydian answered, stepping up beside me. "Somewhere they can't follow."
Damon narrowed his eyes at him. "And how do we know the place is safe? Where are you taking us?"
"You'll know when we get there," Rhydian replied flatly.
The ground shook again. Magic bombs lit up the sky in bursts of violet and green.
A vine whipped past my face, barely missing me.
"We don't have time for this," I said sharply, tugging Damon's hand. "Either we go now or we die here."
His eyes met mine. The cold in his eyes melted into warmth.
Then, he nodded.
Rhydian turned toward the portal and entered first, his blade ready just in case something was on the other side.
"Go," Damon said, nudging me forward.
I hesitated, taking one last glance at the forest behind me.
I thought of White.
I didn't know where he was. Or if he was even still alive.
But if I stayed, I'd never find him. Not when King Zeir had turned the entire forest against me.
My feet moved on their own.
I stepped into the portal, and Golden, who had hidden in my cloak, peeked its head out, before retreating.
The portal was cold like walking through water made of air.
A tug behind me made me turn. Mr. Four eyes stepped in after me, then Mr. Green eyes, and the last to enter was Damon.
The vines sped towards the portal in frenzy, but the portal sealed with a quiet snap, making them attack nothing but the empty space.
…
We arrived at the other side of the portal, the sky was dark, and the terrain was rocky with little to no grass growing.
The wind howled like a lone wolf, carrying frostbite along with its touch.
I dropped to the ground, my chest rising and falling heavily. Then, I lay on the ground staring at the starry night.
This was the most beautiful night I have ever seen in my entire life.
Soon, Mr. Four eyes, Mr. Green eyes, and Damon stepped out of the portal.
Damon fell on the ground, his head a few inches from mine, he inhaled and exhaled sharply.
Mr. Four eyes and Mr. Green eyes sat on the ground, panting from exhaustion.
Rhydain stood in front of us, his eyes scanning the area.
"We need to find a place to hide." He muttered, turning to me. "Aeris, let me help you up."
I reached out my hand to him, but was grabbed by a bloodied one. To my surprise, it was Damon's.
"I'll help her up. You don't need to worry about her." He gently helped me to my feet.
